Photos and Description of the Marblehead vacation house rental
13 BR, 13 BA, Sleeps 36

We are so excited about sharing our 'new' but very old home and its' stories with you and other potential guests.

Rock of Ages has been sitting on the shores of Lake Erie since 1861. Built of native, local limestone it is listed on the National Historic Register. There simply is not another comparable home on Lake Erie--it is wonderfully unique, and fun to explore. It is very solid (like a 'Rock') and in great shape, but we have renovated the first floor, opening it all up to panoramic views of the lake and have added a state-of-the-art kitchen and plenty of dining space for 30+ people. We love this new area and are sure you will too!

It is located in the village of Marblehead and is within walking distance of Lakeside and the Marblehead lighthouse.

The lighthouse is a spot of natural beauty and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

We have traveled around the world and this is our favorite place on earth! Friendly, down home people, great entertainment (at Lakeside and the islands), wonderful local history, great boating, Cedar Point, and the waves and the winds of Lake Erie are constantly there. What a place! From our tower room and rooftop patio is one of the best views of the Lake Erie islands in the whole area. Come and see. Rock of Ages has a 120ft. spacious patio overlooking the lake with plenty of furniture for sunbathing, eating or gazing at the lake and watching the boats and ferry to Kelley's island. Of course, you can swim off the flat glacial rocks right in front of the house. Within a short drive is a large sandy beach. We still have the original limestone fossil walkways from when 'The Rock' was built. There is a brand new hot tub overlooking the lake.

As well as the new kitchen and dining room/great room on the first floor, there is a living area with a large screen TV. The first floor also has two half baths. The lower level (the former summer kitchen in the 'old days' ) is a large game room with a pool table, ping-pong table, TV, half bath, and tables and chairs which opens out to the backyard patio with a large grill. Rock of Ages has a large parking area to accommodate big groups. Although, it is wonderful in the summer with the windows open and the lake breezes, we do have air conditioning. Rock of Ages can be used year-round and the lake in all it's glory in the ice and snow is something to behold! It can work very well for business or church groups that time of year. Our rates are for the entire property, not per person as in an inn or B&B.

We are a family, sharing with you our family place, not an impersonal management company; we sincerely want your family or group to have a great time at Rock of Ages. We have finished a major renovation, but Rock of Ages will always be a work in progress and we will be constantly upgrading. Almost everyday, we get new ideas! We are glad to answer any questions via email and calls, we realize it is a big decision you may be making for a bunch of relatives and/or friends and you have lots of people to consider and possibly lots of questions.

Wonderful place!

I have stayed at Rock of Ages three times with a group of 10 women! It is a wonder place to stay. Large enough for the whole group, yet cozy corners to get away from it all. The kitchen is large and great to work in. The view of the lake from almost all the windows is an added bonus! If the weather is nice, you can walk right up town to all the shops and places to eat. I can not say enough good things about this place!

A wonderful home to restore your soul!

I invited my family and friends to share a week, last June, at this Historical Home on the water. It was everything I could have hoped for and more! The ammenities provided were just as described, and frankly even better than I imagined. From the incredible kitchen to the dining areas, from the plentiful bathrooms to the linens on every bed, we were so very comfortable and pampered. A suggestion if you are staying during the summer - have a clambake on the patio at the water's edge. I hired Bassett's Market to prepare an authentic New Englad style Bake for 35 people and it was delicious and so much FUN! They will deliver!
Our time together was to remember our youngest son who died June 11, 2011 at the age of 23. His battle brothers from Afghanistan even came for the week to celebrate his life. And our newest grandchild was born during that week.
We came full circle during our stay, and I have Marla and Herb to thank for opening their home to me and being such warm and gracious hosts!

Amazing Stay!!

Just got back yesterday from a weekend family Christmas celebration at the Rock of Ages. What an amazing place! The setting is spectacular as the lake changes personalities daily, Friday smooth as glass, Saturday 3-4 foot waves crashing...it sounded like the ocean! The home itself is comfortable and spacious with quirky nooks and corners for exploring or just finding some quiet. Absolutely anything you can think of is provided for you in the beautiful kitchen. I brought serving platters, bowls, etc and everything was already there. Over and over, family members commented on the incredible location and how thankful we were that everyone was under one roof. The listing description didn't begin to describe just how well equipped the home is...everything from plentiful dishware and silverware, serving pieces, ice maker, puzzles, playing cards and board games is provided for your entertainment. The home was clean and well appointed, everything we could have asked for. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!!

The Rock Rocks!

This was our annual family vacation, a yearly ritual that started 11 years ago in Manhattan Beach, California with one grandchild, and now is up to eleven grandchildren. We have been to Sequim, Washington; Deep Creek, Maryland; Bethany Beach, Delaware; Stone Harbor, New Jersey; Dennis, Massachusetts; and Weston, Massachusetts. We are up to a total of 21 people. The women say this is the best kitchen of all! Every bedroom has its own bathroom-the best of all! We don't have to remember when the trash is going to be picked up, there is a dumpster-the best of all! Where do we swim-off the front porch! Don't have to be concerned about a linen service for towels and bed sheets-they are already there! We have a reservation for August 2013.

Summer campers at Rock of Ages in the winter

5 of 5
Submitted: March 6, 2012 Stayed: February 2012
We are all friends who camp together all summer. On February 17 we arrived at "Rock of Ages" for ag fun week end together. By the middle of winter we are anxious for camping season to begin but in North East Ohio it is too early so we enjoy getting together in the winter months and this seems to make the time go faster until it is once again spring and time to see everyone at our permantent camp sites. Rock of Ages was more than we could have hoped for. The view is breathtaking. There was more kitchen amenities than we could lhave imagined and everything was included from paper product to cleaning products to dishwasher and laundry soap and fabric softener. If you needed it, it was there. The bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry facilities were all more than we could have asked for. The cleanliness was as how I would expect it at the best resorts. The quilts on the beds are gourgeous, as is everything. We can't say enough wounderful things about "The Rock" We have already made our reservations for next year. Except next year we are staying for three night (which isn't enough). The quaint shops in downtown Marble Head are so unique and the owners so friendly. I am sure this is a destination we will be back to year after year . Sitting in the large leather chairs in front of the large windows while being warmed by the beautiful gas log fireplace is one of the most relaxing times I have had in a very long time. I would recommend this home to everyone, and I thank Marla for sharing it with us. We are ALL looking forward to next February. Thanks Marla, Terri

Great Family Reunion Spot

5 of 5
Submitted: August 30, 2011 Stayed: August 2011
This is a great family reunion house! Four generations of our family (age 3+ to 84) traveled from many different states to stay together at the Rock of Ages house. Every morning, we watched the sunrise on Lake Erie. Our days were spent in the town of Marblehead, at Cedar Point, Put-in-Bay, and at the beach on Lake Erie. They were all great. Some family members explored the wineries around the area. Who knew Ohio made such great wine! Our evenings were spent cooking together, sharing stories, playing cards, and laughing. Just the kind of family fun we love! The house fit our needs perfectly. The kitchen was all we expected and more. We had plenty of space to spread out. There were plenty of bathrooms and bedrooms, but I wished the bedrooms had dressers or closets to put clothes away. Living for a week out of a suitcase was the only down side.

Owner's Response: Sigh! I wish Rock of Ages' bedrooms had closets too! But,when The Rock was built over 150 years ago---closets were not generally put into bedrooms. Eight out of the 13 bedrooms have dressers though and all of the bedrooms have clothes trees for hanging up clothes. Rock of Ages is not a hotel, inn or bed and breakfast---but an historic family home--you will feel a little more like you are staying in your Grandma or aunt's vacation home, than a hotel.

Many Happy Returns!

If you're looking for a wonderful place to stay in this area of Ohio, look no more, you've found it! Myself and a group of lady friends started staying here for our once a year get -a- way weekend. We were so amazed when we arrived the first time that we unanimously agreed to return the next year without reserve. The house is so large and spacious and has EVERY possible thing you might need to make your stay a pleasure. Other than food and your clothing you need NOTHING! The furnishings and especially the beds and linens are of such high quality you'll feel like you're in the finest hotel in Europe. Each room has its own special charm. The fact that it was built years ago and still holds the splendor of a grand estate not only is a testament to how well it was constructed but also the great care and upkeep the owners have done and still do to keep it that way. Since 2005 we have been returning yearly and have NEVER been disappointed. It seems like each year gets better and now feels like a visit to an old friend. I'm happy to say, we have just returned from our recent stay in May and once again have booked for 2012!! Everyone should experience this place just once in their life! You will be very happy you did!

Wonderful Winter Weekend

5 of 5
Submitted: March 3, 2011 Stayed: January 2011
Our group consisted of eight couples who simply wanted a weekend away after the holidays. When we walked in and saw the fireplace already glowing, we knew we had found our retreat. The Rock is perfect. The main floor, including the kitchen, is large and spacious yet warm and cozy. The fantastic views of the frozen lake are amazing. We had a dinner party catered by Avery's, a local restaurant, and enjoyed a delightful Saturday evening. The bedrooms and baths are quaint, comfortable and clean. The men especially enjoyed the lower level pool table, ping pong table and TV. Everything is provided; guests need only bring clothes and personal items. The kitchen has at least one of anything you can think of; all you need to bring is food and drink. Before we left, the vote was unanimous-we're coming back next year. We have already booked The Rock for our 2012 winter weekend!

This place was amazing in so many ways. We had so many beautifully decorated bedrooms to choose from. The large tables to eat together was so nice. We played games in front of the fire place. We worshiped and sang hymns out on the tables by the water. The kitchen was amazing. My dream kitchen! The caterer you recommended was killer good! The 16 ladies from church were in love with the place and hope to return.

AMAZING, AWESOME, OUTSTANDING, SPECTACULAR! The Rock was unparrelled to any place we've ever stayed. Twenty-five special education teachers enjoyed lounging in the hot tub, sitting by the lake in the adorondeck chairs, playing the grand piano, playing pool and eating fabulous meals. Everything about the Rock was first class, from the wine glasses to the bedding. The decorating of all the bedrooms was really special. I have just finished booking the Rock for a comeback. Everyone loved it so much they begged me to go back. I don't see how anyone would be disappointed.
