Would definitely go again! The house was shared by our family as well as another (friends of ours). There was more than enough space for us and we found the location to be perfect for a lengthy vacation. No hassles since Lucio is always available to help you out. The house was better than the pictures and we could all agree on that!

We were all pleased with the number of places that we could find our own privacy within the home. It definitely felt like home and was hard to leave.

Our family, myself, husband and two sons ages 17 and 12 rented Casa Merlot for a week in July 2008. The house is a dream! It has three spacious bedrooms complete with ceiling fans and air-conditioning. We did not find the A/C to be necessary as the fans and cross breezes kept the rooms cool. There are three full baths inside, and, outdoors, a rooftop shower and a poolside powder room. The pool is lovely and excellently maintained by the caretaker, Lucio. The pool area is wonderful. Lots of seating and a fabulous brick BBQ. Spend some time speaking with Lucio. He is a gem! He arrived everyday to look after the pool and to provide assistance with anything we needed. He and his family are delightful people. The interior of the house is beautifully furnished and sparkling clean. There are two kitchens complete with every amenity you could wish for. The numerous decks are outfitted with tables, chairs or hammocks. The rooftop terrace is beautiful for watching the night sky or sunbathing. Casa Merlot is just a two minute walk to the beautiful, uncrowded beach. The house is just a few minute walk to the main square where you will find restaurants, shopping and internet access. Puerto Morelos has the second largest reef in the world and the snorkeling is divine. Ask Lucio about finding a guide. The town is quiet and friendly. We enjoyed several meals at El Pirata (inexpensive, good Mexican fare) and one exceptional meal at John Grays's (moderate to expensive, but worth every penny). Try the special macaroni and cheese. YUM! We also enjoyed the Pollo Asado at Juanita's, fresh tortillas from the Tortilleria, fresh fish from the seafood market and the amazing variety of fresh fruits and vegetables at the Wednesday morning market. If you decide to stay at Casa Merlot, you will not be disappointed. Owner Karen has taken painstaking care to provide her guests with everything they need for a blissful vacation. We will remember Casa Merlot for a long time to come.

March 2007Hi Karen, just wanted to get back to you on our vacation. We had a great time. You have a very nice home there, the design was very good and very functional including the yard etc. You got a lot done with the space you had! I thought all the plastic glasses etc. were a great idea with all the tile floors and patio area. Diane really like the little green shot glasses, she wants to find those and get some herself. It did take us a while to adjust to the heat being in town, we ended up walking downtown via the beach after a few days. Our favorite thing turned out to be the fresh fish from the dock which was of course was in your notes, we did that twice. Red Snapper and Grouper, the latter being the favorite. Buying fresh veggies at the market on Wed morning made the meals even better. (Lucio's idea) John Gray cooked Coronado at his place which is really good fish too, but we never saw that at the docks. As I mentioned before, Lucio is the best, you are very fortunate to have such a great guy looking over the place. Some time I would like to hear the story how you came upon him. We are going to Playa del Carmen May 9th for 4 days as Diane won a trip there from work. We will come up one day to PM and we had to promise Lucio we would come and see him. John Gray told us to call him from his place in PDC and he would come down there one evening too. Mama's bakery moved to the two lane street, not quite a long block from the main square. She is very close to the Italian restaurant I believe or one of the dive shops. Nice lady but we got poor information from her regarding the fishing and cooking over the grill. Lucio saved the day and got us some charcoal as there was none in town. I never know what to tip the caretaker, I almost called you but we left him $80 or $100 US at the end of our stay. We stopped at the Real Estate place, we just wanted to walk by the lot in town but the lady you know wanted to show us around that afternoon. Nice gesture but we just opted to hang out instead. We did drive out north of town on the water where we have stayed in the past. One of the owners was there that we have gotten to know . His place has been rebuilt and is for sale. 1.1MM The agent you know has the listing. So that's it from here, thanks again for sharing your home with us. Scott

7/10/2006 Karen, I have yet to delete my e-mails relating to Puerto Morelos and our correspondence. As I sit at my desk daydreaming about our wonderful trip, I am hesitant to delete this connection to a truly enjoyable experience. My wife, 20 year old son and girlfriend, 20 year old daughter, 15 year old son and myself had the best vacation time ever. The village was everything you said it would be. The kids felt completely safe walking to town to get something to eat or drink or just look around. I sent my 15 year old to buy bread and pineapple juice with 100 pesos and he thoroughly enjoyed practicing his one year of high school Spanish. The people of this quaint village are very kind, gentle and happy. We always felt completely safe, in fact safer than in Houston or parts of San Antonio. The transportation service was wonderful and they took us to Wal-Mart to stock up on groceries, that was a trip in itself. The next day we bought "Hog Fish" from the local spear fishermen and cooked it at the house, it was wonderful. We also got to know the great lady who runs "Mama's Bakery" and sampled her food often. We also rented a car from her that was delivered to her door for us. We drove to Playa del Carmen and experienced the other end of the spectrum of beach resorts. I didn't enjoy that much but the ladies seemed to manage to shop for about 5 hours. We also went to Tulum one day. That is very interesting and the beach is spectacular. If I went back I would wear a swimming suit and take a swim before returning. Please continue to recommend "John Gray's Restaurant". As I told you earlier, I can be an obnoxious Texan and it pains me to admit that the best steak I ever put in my mouth was cooked by John Gray in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience with my family in your beautiful home. Lucio and Elsie were very helpful and courteous. I was proud that my kids developed a sincere appreciation for the people of the village and chose to come back to the Market in Puerto Morelos to purchase hammocks, jewelry, etc. so we would be helping the local economy. We will look back with fond memories of relaxing around your beautiful pool and sharing the adventures of the day miles away from this office and our hectic pace. Please do not hesitate to give my name to anyone seeking a recommendation. Sincerely, John Walker George West, Texas

Your villa was everything and more, we stayed for 2 weeks in April and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The views from all around the villa were spectacular, especially from the top patio. The outdoor shower was a huge bonus, you were dry in minutes. We also loved the swimming pool, anytime you were hot (which was all the time) you simply went into the pool to cool off and get you ready for your short walk to the beach. The surrounding area was beautiful, we watched a villa across the street get an addition which was so interesting to our husbands, because they do things alot differently in Mexico. We purchased fresh fruit from a vendor in a truck with a canopy, also some fresh baked goods from another family in a van. The walks to the village in the evening were wonderful. I loved the fact that day or night you had a balmy breeze that enveloped your soul. The restaurants in the village were such a great experience, we loved them all, and the waiters were most helpful with our lack of Spanish. Lucio and Elsie were the most delightful hosts, they accommodated our needs and we became friends, especially my brother whom Lucio calls Grandee Amigo. As far as going on tours and taking taxis, it was so easy to do, as well as taking the bus. We would come back there in a heartbeat. FANTASTIC! Sincerely, Rock, Ingrid, Norman and Janice

Please forgive my tardiness in not communicating earlier about our trip to Casa Merlot in Puerto Morelos in March. If I was rating the holiday out of ten it would be at least 13.  My wife have been traveling all over the Caribbean, Mexico, Cuba, and believe this past March Break was probably the best. Your villa made our stay in P.M. so very enjoyable. Lucio and his wife were top notch and the room in the villa was excellent for the three couples not tripping over each other. I hope you don't mind but one of the ladies actually slept on the sunning deck upstairs the last two nights. (Apparently she snores and her husband is a light sleeper).  The beach, ocean, pool, massages, absolutely everything was exactly what our group was looking for in a vacation. I don't think we will be back next year ( we are always looking for something different) but I am absolutely confident that we will be back in the very near future.  --- Thanks again Rob Cooke
