Just what we hoped for!

Our family loved this cottage last summer. Six of us found everything we were looking for. From the time we walked in the front door we felt welcomed by the warm log walls and wood floors plus the stone fireplace. My husband and I found the hot tub our relax place with a cup of coffee listening to birds in the early morning. Our sons fished and caught many turtles. The girls enjoyed the paddle boat and canoe. When it rained one day we found time to play games and enjoy family time like we never take time for at home. With four kids the washer and dryer were very convenient. We have stayed at many cottages, but this one tops our favorite list. We will be back!

Owner's Response: We are very pleased that you enjoyed our log cottage. We have had many years of family gatherings at the cottage and lived their full time for a few years ourselves. It is our pleasure to share it with enthusiastic renters who like the unique log home setting on a no gas motor lake. We hope you return soon.

Weekend Get-A-Way

What a delightfully beautiful cottage. We found everything one could possible need. The cottage has many family heirlooms decorating the inside, but also has all the modern amenities one would expect at a five star hotel. Very relaxing! We will be back.

Weekend Getaway

Submitted: September 19, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
We had a very relaxing weekend and really enjoyed our stay. This cabin is clean and very well-maintained, the decor is really amazing for the "up north" feeling. We've stayed in the area at other venues in the past. This is definitely the most "complete" cabin - with the paddle boat, canoe, rowboat, gas grill and especially the hot tub, and nice peaceful lake. (There a Labor Day party across the lake with some music - but it was not annoying and there were some nice fireworks that evening as a bonus). We went fishing a bit and although the warm lake made it tough we did catch a nice bass and some small perch and bluegill.
I would definitely recommend this for couples or families. Our kids are grown now but a place like this would have been perfect when they were young. There is a lot to do in Traverse City - many restaurants, shops, golf courses - but since the weather was nice and the cottage so comfortable - we chose to stay at the cabin mostly and enjoy the lake, read a book, or soak in the hot tub.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind comments. Our children vacationed with us at Perch Lake Cottage while growing up and still love the ambiance, and peacefulness of visiting. We have family reunions here every year.

Outstanding Relaxation

We thoroughly enjoyed our week, everything detail that was showed on-line was accurate. Don't be fooled by "small" cabin, this nest can easily handle a family. The amenities were bountiful and you did not have to travel far to pick up anything you might have left at home. Very relaxing location with neighbors only on one side. Definite destination again in the future.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. We are happy you enjoyed your stay at our cottage.

The cabin was absolutely perfect. I have never seen such attention to detail & was pleasantly surprised by each discovery. The only thing we needed was food. Very clean & in perfect condition-they thought of everything. The lake was clean & quiet-can't wait to return next year.

Relaxing Week Away from it All

We enjoyed a wonderful week at the cottage on Perch Lake during May 2011. The weather didn't cooperate very much, but the cottage was cozy and we were content to while away the hours reading, working crosswords, and my step-dad spent most of his time trying to figure out the Rubiks cube!

We really enjoyed the deck and dangling our feet in the water... a little too nippy for us to go swimming, but some others across the lake were brave enough... it was a pleasure to watch them play in the water. We didn't take advantage of the boats this time, but hope to if we are able to return next year.

There were plenty of things to do in the area and grocery stores/restaurants nearby met all of our needs. We especially enjoyed the Cherry Street Market in Kalkaska with their wonderful fresh fruits & vegetables, flowers, garden items, and deli/bakery. We purchased some fresh Morel Mushrooms there as a treat for my birthday dinner! Fabulous!

I would definitely recommend this place.... Jean & Paul Kirchner were easy to work with, the cottage was well equipped, clean & cozy!

Our little piece of Heaven

We love the cabin at Perch Lake!!!!! We have been renting this cabin for 17 years and counting. This is a little piece of heaven, the mist on the lake, the sound of the Loon, the one on one time with our kids and not to mention the place is beautiful. One of the things we love is every year they do something to upgrade the cabin. It has everything you need, so all you have to do is pack your clothes and drive there. The dock is my one of my favorite places here, there's something about this cabin, the minute you arrive you feel at home and the stress of every day life as we know it....... well it just vanishes and for us every August we all (even the teenagers and 20 somethings) can't wait till its time to come to Perch lake. Jean and Paul are the owners and they are always there to help if you should ever need anything. Whether you are looking for family time, vacation time or a quiet getaway for you and your special someone this cabin is a great choice. Its beautiful in the summer and the colors are amazing in the fall. Traverse city is just a short drive away, you can take a scenic back road there. Oh yes before I forget don't forget to visit the fruit market in Kalakaska. There is so much more to say, but you truly need to come and see for yourself. I promise you, you'll be back year after year.

watch your security deposit!

No matter what you do, how good of a time you're having-make sure to call the owners about EVERYTHING or else kiss your security deposit goodbye. I would suggest even if you're not using something, check it out when you get there and call the owners if there's something you think could possibly be wrong.
Also, the information on this page is not totally on the up and up-the shed full of firewood costs $5 for a small crate full, there is seating for 5 people in the living area not 8, and there is an extra cost for more guests than 4.
While there we had a great time, the cabin is a nice one w/ great amenities. But when all was said and done definitely not worth the price paid.
Owner's Response: We have owned and managed several lakefront rentals with hot tubs for 20 plus years and have a 99.8 % satisfaction response on our evaluations from guests. We take pride in offering two delightful rental properties. They remain delightful because we take care of details every week. The low rating this guest gives us at this point reflects their dissatisfaction with our need to retain a portion of their security deposit.

This guest rated us a 10 (our highest rating) on the evaluation sheet left at the cottage at the end of their stay and indicated that they wanted to rent again. As we evaluated the property after this guest's stay we discovered a big mess in the hot tub. We retained a portion of their deposit due to the need for draining, extensive cleaning, filling and prepping the hot tub for the next guests. We subsequently followed up with multiple discussions and explanations.

To assure ourselves that there was not a inert issue with the hot tub, we agreed to evaluate the tub after use by the next renters. The hot tub was cleaned and prepped in the same way for both renters. Our next guests were at the cottage for a week and used the hot tub frequently during their stay. The hot tub was in great shape after their rental. The complaining guests managed to trash the hot tub during a 3 days stay.

Regarding other comments:
One crate of firewood is provided free of charge for the fireplace. After that there is a charge per crate used. There is a large pile of free wood for the firepit and plenty to be gathered in adjacent woods.

The dining area has a round table with 2 leaves that extend the seating area. We seat up to a dozen people around the dining table. Chairs need to be gathered from other rooms in the cottage. There is a large picnic table, a child picnic table, and a round patio table outside plus multiple fireside chairs and other lakeview seating.

We DO NOT charge for guests over 4 but we do need to know how many people are coming. We often DO charge for over 8 guests.

Guests sign a contract assuring us that they will report to us anything that does not meet their inspection or need at the beginning and anytime during their stay. We work to make things right for folks from the get go. More guests are coming, we need to make sure things are in working order at all times.

Paul and Jean want to share some of the recent remarks from the Kirchner Cabin Guestbook. “Our favorite moment here was our first morning, looking over the lake and hearing…. Nothing... just breeze, birds, the occasional woodpecker; our first evening listening to bull frogs [which sounded like a slightly out of tune banjo string being played].” “This was our second year here and it’s hard to believe that it was even better this time around. The nicest thing about this place is its quiet, homey feel. My daughter, at one point on the first day said, “It surprises me how much affection I have for this Cabin”. Thinking about it, though, it’s not all that surprising. Within a day we remember with all the distractions of work, school, hustle behind us…. How much fun we have together as a family. Thanks Kirchners for allowing us to share this wonderful spot.” “Our lives are always crazy, jam packed, long houred and short, but being here we were finally able to enjoy life. The days are longer, air is cleaner and you can’t hear traffic pass your window. It’s absolutely beautiful. The kids were able to fish [they love it] and get as dirty as they want. We enjoyed our family time together. The think the Hot Tub was GREAT, especially at night when the stem would just rise off the top of the water. Your cabin is beautiful and very cozy and we can’t wit to come back!” “This is a great cottage for families to spend quality time at. We made a lot of special memories here that we will never forget. Also thank God for Mike the neighbor who taught us how to fish.” “I have to say that the cabin is the perfect “base camp”. We love waking up here, playing with the boats, swimming, lying around reading, just plain relaxing. We are looking forward to next year...” “Had a great time fishing on the lake. It was nice to have so many boats. Caught one nice bass. We all enjoyed star gazing while having a fire. The hot tub was great to soak in, especially after a day of climbing dunes. We had a good time floating down the Manistee River on tubes. It was a great vacation and we loved the cabin.” “Our 9th year…. We love this cabin and it really doesn’t matter what the weather is.” “We enjoyed your cabin and our 2 week stay. It was so relaxing, especially in the hot tub and paddling around the lake. Even the rainy, stormy days were fun as we had some marathon card games. The laundry facilities were a
