Has its faults, but overall a good experience
Our family of four spent nine days at this historic style home. It was nice to get away from it all and the views from this home are absolutely unbeatable. The owners, Chris and Carol, are wonderfully friendly people.
Among the positives of this home was the spectacular view. Even on a cloudy day, from the front porch you have an amazing view. On clear, sunny days, the island of Maui is clearly visible, and you can even make-out some of the details of the terrain. There are snorkel spots nearby in the calm season, as well as the historic artists' town of Hawi. There are also good places to hike, and the lovely Pololu valley is a short drive away. The owners are easily contacted if needed.
Some things to consider before you book this property include its location. While this is without a doubt the prettiest view you will experience on the island, it is a good distance from the resort town of Kailua-Kona, which is where most of the activities and white sand beaches are. The drive into Kailua took an hour with light traffic, and even with constant views of the beautiful coastline, this became a chore for us. Another thing to note is the amount of rainfall the North Kohala district receives. As beautiful as it is on a clear, sunny day, you can expect some rainfall during your stay here.
As for the home itself, it has a cozy feel and really adds to the "away from it all" feeling. You can expect to lose cell-service once you pass through the town of Hawi. Wifi is provided, but the signal is weak and can usually only be reached in the kitchen. It's also important to note that the loft is all one room, and although it's listed, there is no room divider or separating wall up there. It's really more of a "one bedroom plus loft" home. I would not call it a three-bedroom. The master bedroom is nice, but the master bathroom has no door, and no shower.
Although all the windows can be opened for a refreshing breeze, there is no heat in the home, and damp clothing will not air dry due to the moisture of the climate. There is a washer and dryer, but the machines are outside, and no hot water is available for washing linens. Also, there is no dishwasher, so cleanup after a family meal takes a lot of time. Nearly every morning we saw ants in the kitchen, loft and second bathroom; but nothing we weren't able to handle.
Overall our stay was a good experience. It was nice to enjoy the view and a new perspective.
