Nice Location, good communication with owner, run down unit, not very clean or luxurious

The location of this building is nice, close to everything, Cartegena was a fun city. The communication with the owner was good, he was very responsive. We should have seen a red flag, once we made final payment we were emailed a list of instructions/deficiences.... The water heater may not work, the AC unit is tricky, etc.... Well, once we got there things didn't work. The water heater was not a big deal (uncomfortable but we managed) as the temperture stays around 90 degrees. But the broken AC was a big deal, it was the one in the bedroom, the owners pre-directions got it running but it never got cool. Lots of things in the unit have been neglected, Kitchen sink faucet, couch was lumpy with broken springs, ants everywhere, broken dishes, etc.... the unit had a musty/moldy smell to it, the good news is it forced us to be out and about in this beautiful city. The Wifi did work and that was nice.
We had family that stayed in an older condo next to this building and they had a nice place, older but clean and nice. We did all of our cooking there and even swam in their pool. The pool associated with this unit was layed out nice, but once again not clean.. The staff did clean it on Monday but it did not keep up with the volume of guests. It seemed this building is mostly daily and weekly renters so it was always crowded, long waits for the "high speed" elevators.
We felt mislead, we never met the contact lady-manager, when we arrived, there was no toilet paper and the towels provided seem dirty and paper thin. We had to do a late night run for toilet paper after traveling all day, not fun. My wife immediately washed everything including the bed sheets as we suspected they were not clean, We left messages for the designated manager "Ingrid" and finally on the thrid day we got some towels - more paper thin ones and two rolls of TP. My wife and I love camping and we know how to rough it, but we were thinking this was going to be a litlle nicer based on the photos and the descrption on the website. The photo were probaly taken when this unit was new...the place was run down. The owner probaly needs to go their personally and see exactly the condition of this unit. It was probably nice once, but now it is uncomfortable, run down and dirty.
No disrespect to the owner but we wanted to give an honest assesment, so travelers can make up their own minds.
Owner's Response: You are the first of dozens of families who stayed at the apartment who had a negative experience. You wrote that the apartment smelled funny. Cartagena is in tropical climate. Apartments do smell funny when you arrive first time. Just open the window for a few minutes. You found small ants in the kitchen. They are everywhere in the tropics. All you need is a bug spray and they will be gone. Don't leave food out at night. You wrote that the the pool was too dirty for you and too crowded. I guess it is not too dirty for all the people who swim in it making it crowded...
You wrote that there were lines at the high speed elevators . The building has a lot of people in it because it is a great place. Would you like a building that nobody wants to stay in ?
You wrote that the AC did not work. We checked it immediately and it works fine. You probably could not figure out how to use the remote control. You wrote that the water heater did not work . We checked it immediately and It works . You probably could not figure out how to use it . Nobody before you had any problem with using the AC or water heater.
You wrote that the towels were too thin. Thank you for your observation. We got thicker ones.
You found no toilet paper when you arrived . This may have been a mistake my manager made . She will be more careful in the future.
You wrote plates were broken. Not the case .They may be chipped because the apartment is very popular and a lot of tourists from all over the world vacation in it. We replace broken plates and glasses immediately.
You wrote you did not meet the manager when you arrived. That was because you arrived after 11p.m. We made arrangements for your late check in but she could not be there personally that late. Sorry.
Pictures were taken August 2011.I go there every 6 weeks and check everything personally. You wrote that the owner was responsive. Yes I did respond to each of the more than fifteen emails you sent me with various questions before your arrival. If you had problems during your 10 day stay you should have emailed me at least once . I would have helped the best of my ability.
