Great View, Terrible Security!
My husband and I spent a month in this apartment this past June, while we were attending the Institut de Francais. We arrived at this apartment and did find a spectacular view and a great terrace. What we also found was a totally non-functional pool, that was under renovation. The owner had never notified us of this, even though he was aware that this was our primary reason for renting the apartment. We were promised each few days that it would be up and running, however, for the entire four week period it was totally non-functional, which was a major disappointment for us.There were other things that were non-functional in the apartment, such as the phone and internet, (which was repaired after 2 days) the awning which broke the second time we attempted to use it, and some other more minor upsetting defects like the ceiling fans which were lose and made noise. The owners, who seemed quite friendly and cooperative on the phone, during our numerous phones calls to them in the U.S., gave us the names and phone numbers of people to call to arrange for various repairs. Luckily we both speak reasonable French, so we were able to more or less arrange for the repairs.
THE MAJOR DEFECT, HOWEVER, IS THAT THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO SECURITY IN THE BLDG. No locked front door to the lobby, and a dark, unlit courtyard where the parking area is located. When we had been in the apartment for four nights with the lovely breeze coming into our bedroom and waking up to the lovely view, we awakened to find the police in the parking area and two terrified owners who shared the second floor with us. They had been robbed in the night by someone who came into their apartment through the terrace and had stolen things while they were sleeping. This was several doors down from ours and could just as easily have been our apartment. The police advised everyone that they should always sleep with the metal shutters in front of the windows and glass doors tightly closed at night, as these break ins were frequent in the area and their was little or no security in the building. We did not sleep well for the remainder of our stay. With the shutters closed, there was no air circulation and it felt like the inside of a third world prison. As a result we stayed with friends whenever possible, because our stay there was ruined. So if you are not fond of sleeping in a locked up hot cell for security reasons, this is not the place for you. It is also unbearably hot with the shutters down.
Owner's Response: I read the evaluation written by the couple who occupied my apartment last June and feel it is my responsibility to rebut their negative report. It is a fact that the swimming pool was not operational in June, although I had been assured many times by the building management that the renovation would be completed in May. Despite almost daily promises of imminent completion, the totally renovated, now lovely pool, was not opened until early July. I apologized profusely to the renters for this and compensated them with a generous refund. It is also a fact that there was a robbery (not in our apartment) in the building during their stay. However, had the people affected taken basic security measures this incident could have been prevented. Whether in Miami or Monte Carlo, you do not leave the doors wide open all night as it is a simple precautionary measure to close them before you retire at night. There is plenty of cross ventilation even with our shutters down and windows and glass doors open. The building is extremely safe as there is a concierge on the premises, entrance door with locks, and plenty of light throughout the premises. People of all ages live there happily all year long and no one has ever complained about security. This couple complained almost daily to me via email and phone calls. The concierge and local manager explained to them many times the usage of equipment, although there are explicit instructions in the apartment. Many problems were caused by them for they unplugged the TV/ Internet connection mistakenly which shut these systems temporarily down, and also broke the fan and awning which we immediately repaired, They complained about everything including the lack of good restaurants in the area, the poor bread, the quality of the Mediterranean beaches, etc. They were never happy, although they stayed the entire month. I do not understand such negativism, but perhaps the Riviera was not the right place for this couple. Villefranche-sur-mer is a magnificent place and our apartment is beautiful, safe, and well-maintained. Many visitors have enjoyed it and have been awed by its beauty and comfort. People like this couple should never venture outside of their comfort zone, and I do not honestly understand what pleasure they can derive from their negative evaluation sent almost three months after their departure.
