The Oasis at Surfside Beach
Overall: Great time for our family:Grandparents, Mom, Dad, 7 year old, 4 year old. House was comfortable; beach was just a few yards away, and was accessible and safe for young and old. We found ample cookware, dishes and utensils, and towels for house use. Washer and dryer were convenient; dishwasher was brand new. Appliances were great.
We are frequent Home Away/ VRBO users, so we have come to expect certain things in a vacation rental. While the owner did what he could to correct issues, there were some issues of which potential renters need to be aware.
We had signed our contract on 6 January, to arrive on 8 March no earlier than 4:00 PM. We abided by that, with our children and grandchildren arriving about 5:00 PM on the 8th. House was not ready; bathrooms had not been cleaned, still trash in the house, etc. We immediately notified the owner and it was taken care of the next morning; however, by the next morning our kids had already cleaned the bathroom (they had to use it). That was apparently just confusion with the housekeeper on our arrival date.
Things you should know: Take drinking/coffee/cooking water with you or you can purchase gallon jugs of it at the Valero on the corner. Water in the house is pale yellow, and we were told by the housekeeper (after we arrived) that the water has some level of arsenic in it...DO NOT DRINK IT. Be prepared to make your own beds;something we had not experienced at other vacation homes. Clean sheets are folded and placed on the beds, but beds are not made. The house was great, but we did have an issue on our last night there. The water was suddenly, with no advance notice, turned off. The 'House Rules Book' did, in fact, say there could be times when water and/or power would be cut off for short periods of time. A 'short period of time' can mean anything,we were suddenly in the middle of a no-water situation with dinner dishes to do and laundry to do before we had to leave by 11:00 the next morning. We followed the instructions in the book, called the number, and received a message that 'the mailbox was full". We called the owner. Luckily, our children and grandchildren had gone home two days before, so we had no little ones to worry about, but we have to say the owner's attitude was kind of like the whole thing was a chuckle, and we should relax. Water was back on in 45 mins. Water cutoff warning should have been in contract, so renter can decide if they want to deal with it. Thank you.
Owner's Response: It is always disappointing when we do not meet a guests expectations. I am not going to try to justify the things that went wrong. There were some things that went wrong and I couldn't make them right no matter how hard I tried. Especially when the city water works broke down. What can i say but I am sorry. Hope to do better the next time.
