Loft Renovation in 1893 Building: Renovation of the Story Block Building was completed in 2010 so everything about this condominium is new except the charm acquired over the last 120 years and the views of the mountains and Main Street from Seventh Avenue. The small rooms of the miner's hotel and the changes made over the years were removed down to the bare walls so new plumbing and wiring could be installed. The condominiums feature large windows and 10 foot ceilings and are finished with green living in mind using hardwood floors, granite and marble countertops, travertine tile, wool carpeting and energy efficient appliances.
Lots To Do Year round: A step out the door puts you in easy walking distance to Ouray Hot Springs Pool, restaurants, shops, museum, Box Canyon Falls, and Cascade Falls. Several hiking trails begin within a few blocks or you can head up into the mountains for off road adventures in this Switzerland of America. A parade and fireworks highlight the Fourth of July while arts festivals and mining events provide entertainment through the year. Ouray is the ice climbing destination in winter and within driving distance to Telluride and Silverton for skiers and festival goers. Ouray also provides groomed Nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails as well as an ice hockey rink. New Years Eve fireworks can be enjoyed from the south facing windows.
History Goes Modern: The Story Block Building is named for William Story, an Arkansas Supreme Court Justice and Lieutenant Governor of Colorado who acquired the building from Louis King who built it but ran into financial difficulties. The first floor has been home to many businesses including a grocery, saloon, general store, beauty salon, car dealership, post office and Ouray's first movie theatre. The Ouray Hardware and MercantileStore, Ouray County Properties and My Store His Money now occupy the commercial units. The second floor was formerly a miner's hotel with small rooms and down the hall baths. Judge Story also occupied an office on the corner of 7th and Main. When John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell were in Ouray filming True Grit they would have climbed the stairs to go to the movie office on the second floor where this condominium is now located. Beginning in 2008 the upstairs was totally gutted and six new luxury condominums were built.
