Our family of 4 just spent a week at El Faro and it was perfect. The condo was very clean and safe and had everything we needed and more. I loved to get up early and enjoy my coffee out on the balcony and watch the sun come up.The staff at El Faro was friendly and any problems we had they fixed quickly.We liked the location of the condo, probably the best beach location and security was always present. We would enjoy the beach for most of the day and in the evening we would walk a few blocks and enjoy the actions of 5th Ave. Our girls loved the various shop and we all enjoyed the variety of restaurants for drinks and great food. It was a great way to experience the Mexican culture. We were all glad we choose this spot for our vacation rather than a resort. I hope we can go back soon and we would stay in Reef 202 again.
Owner's Response: I am glad the condo worked so well for Beth and her family. My favorite thing about the condo is also sitting on the terrace and watching the sun come up while everything is quiet and just starting to come alive. It is nice to hear that she points out that her family felt safe as I ocassionaly get this question from people that have never visited so it is helpful for others to hear this from another family traveling. We appreciate the on site security as well as the front desk that is very helpful. We also like the size of El Faro because it is big enough to have nice amenities like the large pool and grounds but it has a smaller and more natural feel than the big resorts. We also think the location is fantastic being so close to 5th avenue with all the retaurants and shops. It is a nice compliment to say that you would return to our condo Reef 202 and it would be wonderful to have your family to stay again.

We stayed here with our children ages 11, 16 and 20 for a week over the New Year. We enjoyed the location, the wifi was extremely useful to have for the kids to email their friends back home. Having 2 bathrooms was excellent especially since there was 5 of us. All the amenities were available to us. We have been to Playa before but this is our first time in a condo, we will definitely stay in a condo again. I recommend this condo, it has gorgeous views, and the owner was prompt and courteous to deal with. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

We have had lots of guests that have only stayed at hotels before and have found that the condo worked well for their families. They had a wide variety of ages with their family and we have found people of all ages really enjoy the condo. The WiFi has been a fairly new addition that helps keep people in touch back home and we have also recently put in a phone with Free calls to the US and Canada. Its nice to have these convieniences but it also nice to feel like you are really away from it all and just sitting on the terrace and getting lost in the view. Thanks for your stay and hope you are able to return soon.

This was our second year staying at Shawn's most beautiful condo, and it was absolutely fabulous once again! With maid service every day, excellent wifi, a gorgeous view, one can truly just sit back and enjoy vacation. The condo location is perfect for shopping and eating in town (if you every decide to leave the beautiful property!). Personally, I loved the addition of beach yoga with Edwardo right at the complex at 8 am each morning. I highly recommend it as well as staying at the condo. We had four adults in our group and there was plenty of space, too.

The property we stayed in at El Faro was wonderful. There is a king bed in one room, two beds in the second bedroom and a couch. We had plenty of room for five. Very comfortable. The rooms were clean and well kept. There are additional amenities that you do not find at other resorts such as the gas grill and a drawer of games and cards. Nice extra touches we enjoyed.
Owner's Response: Its so nice to hear that the condo worked so well for Loretta and Arlene and their group. They mentioned that having the King bed in the master bedroom and the two queen beds in the large second bedroom and the sofa sleeper in the living room worked well for them. We have found this configuration has worked well for many families and larger groups. They also told me that this was their first VRBO rental so I am pleased that their first experience was enjoyable and I look forward to their return.

If you are looking for a nice place to stay in Playa, this is it. The owner has done a great job with all the amenities!
For starters, there is bottled water, awesome beads, washer / dryer, internet, Vonage phone, underground parking, and the location is great. You don’t need a car, everything is in walking distance. Simply put, I would rent again. We have a great time and definitely think the owner has a very nice set up.
The only one thing I would do different is not rent a car. The rental car companies are a scam and you “have to” purchase insurance on your vehicle which ranges from liability only $14.99 a day to full coverage $34.99 a day and they examine the car with a fine tooth come when you bring it back. Your CC Company also has all kinds of rules which you should know everything about before you rent a car because there are lots of gotcha’s there too. Take a bus, take a taxi or arrange a ride.
Playa is a very nice place to go, it’s safe, clean and there is a lot to do. You won't be disappointed if you stay here.

Owner's Response: I am glad Dave and his group had a great time and enjoyed the amenities of the condo. All guests seem to enjoy the location and ocean views, however, they also appreciate the amenities he mentioned such as having very comfortable beds which we get lots of good feedback on and having the washer and dryer right in the condo. We also offer free bottled water and free wifi and just added Vonage to make free calls to the USA and Canada. We do have the underground parking right on site which is great for some but as Dave mentioned there can be a hassle with rentals and you really don't need a car with the central location. I am also glad to hear that they feel Playa Del Carmen is safe as some that have not been there yet wonder about this and we have also always felt safe traveling to Playa Del Carmen.

I knew from the start that the condo would be exactly as described due to the thorough information as supplied by the owner. What I didn't expect was how quickly Shawn would respond to questions by email, and how complete every detail would be! Our arrangements went off with out a hitch, even when we had to add a late guest for a few nights who had been "orphaned" by a resort we stayed at the previous week. Sylvia at reception speaks excellent English and briefed us on the details of the complex, the balance of the staff speak a little English, so meeting them half way by learning Spanish phrases will be helpful. The condo itself is well appointed, and spacious, and the deck is spectacular. There is security on the beach and street sides, as well as by the parking entrance. The location is the absolute best, beachfront-view and yet a half block from the action of 5 Ave. and a 10 minute walk to the ferry to Cozumel. There is a Starbucks incredibly close as well as a great breakfast spot, 2 properties to the south (90 peso's p/p). In addition, if you nothing else, treat yourself to the coconut shrimp at Playa Maya, (3 properties to the south)....to die for! I should also mention that the front door of the condo is close to stairs and a hallway that leads right to the pool, excellent for supplies! The unit also has a safe large enough to store most valuables. I can say that everything under Shawn's control is as promised and you won't be disappointed!

Awesome Vacation and Condo

We loved our 2 weeks at El Faro 202! The condo was beautiful with an amazing view. You have to see the sunrise out the sliding glass doors from the living room or bedroom - took my breath away. The owner went out of his way to help us with every last detail and question we had. We felt like he was a trusted friend by the time we got to his condo. Loved the condo. The beds were very comfy and we slept great. We didn't hear a sound outside when the doors were shut. When we opened the doors, we could hear a faint beat from a club next door. It was so hot that we used the air conditioning the whole time, which worked great! We had a few meals at Wicky’s and the food was delicious. The El Faro staff at the front desk and the concierge were all friendly and accommodating. We couldn't figure out the TV remote and they came right up to help. We spent a lot of time on the spacious outdoor patio. Sometimes we got Wifi, sometimes we didn’t. We always got wifi at Wicky’s and at the hotel lobby. We felt very safe at El Faro and in Playa del Carmen. We walked everywhere. I feel like we really experienced Playa del Carmen by being in the center of everything, rather than at a big hotel further away. We got to see the original Playa architecture and culture that is beautiful, whereas you only get to experience the new “ritzy” Playa if you stay in one of the big hotels. Our children, 10 and 12, also had a great time. We thought they might get bored without the activities that a big hotel offers, but with a nice pool and beach, and all kinds of fun on 5th Avenue, that was not the case at all. They also loved playing all the board games in the condo before bedtime. If you book through Shawn, you will feel like you got more than you expected. We stayed 2 weeks and loved every minute of it. We hope to get back again and will definitely book with Shawn.

We also enjoy the atmosphere of El Faro because it offers a lot of amenities like the pool and beach and friendly front desk and Wickys restaurant and is very beautiful without feeling like you are lost in a mega resort like some of the larger hotels that can feel like you are in an artificial bubble at times. I also enjoy walking everywhere and feeling the energy from all of the activity around you. It sounds like the WiFi in the condo was a little temperamental during their stay which I will look into as this is not typical as we are told our system is the most reliable type as it comes through the hard wired phone lines but even so it sounds like it was acting up. It sounds like the condo worked great for their family and we have lots of guests with families and encourage this and look forward to their return.

Great Family Vacation!

We booked reef 202 on vrbo.com directly through the owner. Shawn was great to work with. He answered any questions I had very promptly and put any fears I had to ease.
The condo has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Since we had a full kitchen, we stopped at the MEGA store to load up on groceries and beer. We usually ate breakfast and lunch in the condo, and then went out to dinner. It was also great to have a gas grill on the patio! This saved us quite a bit of money!
Also, it was nice to have a washer/dryer in the condo. This allowed us to pack light and not have to check any luggage. Traveling with only carry-ons saved us so much time at the Cancun airport!
The view of the pool and beach from the balcony was beautiful. It was nice to be able to sit out and drink coffee in the morning and watch the sunrise. The beach at El Faro was awesome! I was a little worried after reading other reviews about beach erosion, but the beach in front of El faro is flat and the water is clear. The beach to the north is very murky and you cannot swim in it due to the number of boats tied up, and it is very stinky with a bad rotten egg smell. The beach to the South did have quite a bit of beach erosion and it was very rocky. The beach is very important to us, so we were glad that we picked the right place to stay in El Faro! El Faro definately has the best beach in Playa Del Carmen!
The front desk staff were always friendly and helpful, and we felt safe knowing security was always nearby. The only criticism I have is that there should be telephones in the rooms that can call down to the front desk. Everytime we had a problem or needed more water, we had to walk all the way down to the front desk to let them know. A phone would have been very helpful.
But all in all, we loved our stay here and will definately stay at El Faro again in the future!

We usually start the day having breakfast on the balcony and its such a spectacular setting and so peacefull in the morning wathching the beach come alive. It was nice to hear that she thought the beach in front of El Faro was the best beach in all of Playa Del Carmen and she did not see a problem with beach erosion that some areas of Playa Del Carment have. All of the convieniences mentioned like the Gas BBQ and the washer and dryer in the condo and the big grocery stores close by are great bonuses. I look forward to your next stay.

Fabulous week at this condo- property, location, owner, amenities all top notch!

We stayed here with another couple this last week and it was a dream vacation! The condo has very nice decor, is extremely clean, provides all the necessities and much more. We especially enjoyed the filtered water tank (I would bring a water bottle to keep refilling), the ipod docking station and the spacious deck to lounge on. This particular condo is in a perfect location in the complex, right on the 2nd level close to the beach, looking out over the water. The place was empty when we were there so we always had our pick of cushioned beach chairs to lounge on all day. We toured some other properties while we were there and El Faro was by far the nicest, best atmosphere and perfect blend of big enough, yet small enough. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, bringing us umbrellas right away when we asked, addressing a few things we needed in our condo etc. Very attentive. We had a massage one day which was really nice being right out near the ocean. The owner, Shawn was helpful and responsive from day one, helping us set up transportation, addressing our concerns and staying on top of things. The location is perfect as I said, right off of 5th avenue. We loved strolling 5th every night, popping in different restaurants and shops. We recommend looking up trip advisor for food recommendations, there are some great places a few blocks off of the main drag that are excellent and half the price like La Mission (great food, service and value.) We shopped at WalMart on our way in and had breakfast in the condo most days. We also enjoyed Wicky's which is right in the condo complex for breakfast and lunch- dinner is quite pricy. They have great food and good service. Plus, they will bring it right out to you at the pool so you don't have to move from your chair! Like I said, bring a water bottle so you can keep refilling it when you go out to the pool or to an excursion because you can't drink the water and water is expensive. Overall, it was so wonderful and we look forward to coming back!

Owner's Response: Tiffany did a wonderful job describing the feeling you have when you stay at the condo. When I was looking for a condo I did the same exact thing touring the other properties and I came to the same conclusion that El Faro has the most to offer in Playa Del Carmen with a great atmosphere and just the right size where it is large enough to offer some nice amenities like a large pool and beautiful setting but also not too grand of a scale where you loose the feeling that you are part of something special. The location on the beach and steps from 5th avenue is of course also a huge plus. I would welcome Tiffany back anytime as she had a wonderful attitude about her stay and I could tell she is one of those people that has a passion for new experiences and getting the most out of her vacation.

Excellent condo, great location

My wife, two kids (8 and 11) and myself had a great stay at the El Faro (Reef 202). Great location, walking distance to lot’s of great restaurants and only a block away from 5th. This made it easy to get around town on foot even with the kids in tow. The unit was conveniently located close enough to the pool and beach that we never needed to pack a cooler for drinks and snacks. We could easily just run up to the condo for anything we needed. The balcony was big and we enjoyed eating breakfast while watching the beach come alive. It was also a great place to wind down at the end of our day. The staff was very friendly and the kids especially liked Paula who was in charge of the day time entertainment at the pool. We had a great trip and in the future if our travels lead us back to Playa Del Carmen we would not even think twice about stay in this unit again. Shawn the owner was easy to work with and responded to all my e-mails promptly.

People often ask if El Faro and our condo is a good place for children and a family vacation and it seems like the majority of my guests are families and really enjoy the condo and the way it is set up for their family. One of my favorite things is also having breakfast on the balcony and watching all of the beach activity and feeling the vibrancy of Playa Del Carmen. We have been fortunate to have lots of repeat guests and we look forward to their next trip.
