Cozy spot on quiet street
Was really happy with our stay at Nene house. It is charming and well equipped. Not posh or glitzy, but I personally think better suited to a stay in Kyoto. It's only a block away from the cool old shopping district of Higashiyama, so we didn't have to take busses or trains to go poke about. We have three teenagers and they could just come and go as they pleased, which made the stay that much more relaxing. Also great for walks right out the door visiting some of the more notable shrines and temples. Not far away there is access to the mountain trails too. Nobu the host was very accommodating and made sure we knew where the close bus stops, grocery and restaurants were. His english was very good. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a house rather than hotel stay. One note is the bedrooms are up a steep stairway that could be tough with small children if you weren't used to that

Cozy Home which surpassed our expectations!
Dear Nobu,
We are glad to have chosen Nene House for our short stay in Kyoto. The property is well maintained, clean and well equipped with everything we needed. We enjoyed home cooked breakfast throughout our stay, using fresh local produce! The location is also unbeatable as the popular ninensaka and sannensaka shopping streets are just a stone throw away. Although the location may be a bit difficult to navigate at first, friendly locals made our day by showing us the way to the house. The free wifi is another plus as we found out that wifi offered at cafes and restaurants mainly caters to locals with data subscription. I highly recommend this place as a base to explore kyoto. The experience is definitely better than staying at hotels as it gives us an opportunity to live like a local. Thanks Nobu for making our stay memorable!

Great location!
Our family of 6 enjoyed our 3-night stay at Nene House! Full of character and charm - it felt like we were staying at a heritage house. We were travelling with small children (ages 5 and 3), so having the conveniences of a modern kitchen was wonderful, especially when we were getting over jet lag. Cereal, milk, juices, breads, snacks, fresh fruits, veggies and prepared meals were all available at the nearby grocery store, a 10 minute walk away.
Getting around the neighbourhood was no problem, even with our little ones. The only challenge we had was having to carry the umbrella stroller with our sleeping 3 year-old in it, on our way to Kiyomizudera - lots of stairs! There were many beautiful souvenir shops and rice crackers to try, so we made many pit stops (much to our 6 year-old's delight).
Taking the bus was convenient, and finding a taxi was never a problem. We recommend having a printout of Nobu's map with you when taking a taxi there.
Nobu is very polite, helpful and accommodating. I highly recommend staying at the Nene house for a unique experience!

European family discovering Japan
We stayed for 7 days in August and had a very nice time in Nene House. We had plenty of space for our family with 3 kids (13, 12 and 9 years old). We appreciated the Japanese style of the house, specially the sleeping rooms with the futons. The kitchen is big and it was convenient to have breakfast and dinner at home. There are 3 supermarkets and a bus station with several lines nearby (5 min by foot). We stayed during a very hot period so it was cool to have air conditioned in all the rooms. The location in a beautiful and quite pedestrian area is perfect. It's also close (1 bus station away) to the Gion district with it's lively nightlife. Kyoto has so much to offer that we stay the whole time in the city except for a day trip to Hiroshima with the shinkansen. It was our first time in Japan and we loved the country. We hope to come back one day.

What a treat!
Our stay at Nene House was everything we expected from the glowing reviews. Nobu-san was extremely professional, polite, and helpful. The facilities were clean and orderly--and everything worked! The location in southern Higashiyama was quaint and beautiful as it was out of the way. The serenity and charm of the neighborhood was worth the extra effort it took to get there.
I would stay here again without hesitation.

A very hospitable Japanese stay
We had a wonderful 4 day stay at the Nene House. The location can't be beat. Within a very quick 5 to 10 minute walk is a bus stop, twenty four hour grocery which has a great selection of items, a 7-11, a host of wonderful shops full of handicrafts, a great selection of restaurants and the Kiyomizo-dera which should not be missed. But what sets the Nene House truly apart is the hospitality provided by Nobu San who gave us great advice on the best way to get around town and was kind enough to call us a cab for our departure.

Beautiful little house in fantastic Kiyomizu dera location
We've just returned from spending a few days at this darling little house. It is walking distance from what I would say is one of the most beautiful streets in Kyoto. It's also a short walk to the fabulous restaurants of the Gion area. Get ready to enjoy Kiyumizu Dera and all that the area has to offer when surrounding yourself in one of the best, most relaxing and historical places in Japan! Nobu was also very helpful in meeting us at the house and educating us about the surrounding area. I highly recommend staying at this home.

Charm, location and comfort - NENE House ideal for authentic Japanese experience.
My family of four enjoyed our 10 day stay at the NENE House immensely ! The large size of the house was a welcome relief after 3 nights in one room at the nearby Westin Miyako Hotel. We were able to each have our own space to read, do homework, cook meals, do laundry, and completely submerse ourselves in Japanese culture. The house's location is ideal for those interested in walking to nearby temples, shrines, and shops as you are right around the corner from one of the most picturesque areas in Kyoto. Our children ( ages 7 and 11 ) loved the winding small streets and proximity to nearby Maruyama Park to run around - chase birds and enjoy ice-cream. The traditional futon bedding is extremely comfortable, and the heating / cooling systems of each room work efficiently. The kitchen is really large and the induction stove could boil water in 90 seconds! The traditional layout of the house, including 'genkan' entryway where you remove your shoes, tatami rooms, and bath offer an authentic Japanese experience - which I would highly recommend.
Nobu Takahashi was an absolute pleasure to interchange with - very warm, gracious and kind.
We loved our stay at the Nene House, and dream of returning soon.

This house was in the most amazing location, walking distance to a lovely, old section of Kyoto with lovely shops, restaurants, temples/shrines and rickshaws. The directions were very clear. The house was very clean and beautfully presented, the futons incredibly comfortable and we loved the character of this wooden home. The kotatsu kept us snug and warm. It was so wonderful to find a house that could accommodate 6 of us. Nobu san was wonderful with his advice and help. The mid week clean of the house, removal of garbage, fresh supplies and fresh towels was a lovely gesture. An amazing experience for us. Thankyou.
