This is our second time as guests of the Manfred and Margie at the Villa Ocean's Edge. We were a party of six 'girls' that stayed a week in late April, and again we could not have made a better choice. The villa has had several very good upgrades, starting with the master suite's bathroom, which was good before but now is fantastic with a new double shower! The middle bedroom has been extended to include a closet and was very comfortable for two guests. The third bedroom, which received the most renovation, now includes a bathroom, small kitchenette and a sitting area, very nice. Everything was clean, functional and more than we expected like the new grill! Like all of the reviewers have said, the villa location is close to beaches, the town of Red Hook, the ferry and good restaurants. The view cannot be topped, and you almost want to stay here for your entire vacation. Most of all, I would highly recommend the villa, we have no complaints and hopefully, we will be guests next year, can't wait!

We just loved this house! The location was fantastic, very close to Red Hook and everything that we wanted to do. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed, made the stay a lot easier (here were days where we never even left the house!) Manfred (the owner) and his son were very sweet and extremely accommodating. The view was spectacular, if we stay in St. Thomas again, we would definitely stay here!

Nice Stay

We stayed and Manfred and Margie's Villa Ocean's Edge between 3/28 and 4/4. Margie met us at the airport, which was VERY helpful for us as it was the first time we've been to the St. Thomas airport. We picked up our vehicle and followed her to the Villa. Word to the wise about driving on the Island. #1 - The posted speed limit is 35 MPH. Some, not all, locals drive faster than this when they can (it is hilly and very curvy). #2 - Some, not all, locals don't know how to operate their turn signals, which can be challenging when you are turning right at a stop sign and they are coming from the left side of the road. #3 - Some, not all, locals don't know what a stop light or stop sign is for. Now, of course the same can be said for some drivers stateside, but when your now driving on the left side of the road it becomes a bit more hazardous. Be a DEFENSIVE driver. Now on to the Villa. It was clean, and everything was in functioning order. The view from the main room, pool or master bedroom is FANTASTIC! Beds are comfortable. No problem with hot water in the bathrooms. Flat screens in each room and wireless works well. Kitchen well stocked with condiments, appliances and utensils. Never any problem with people noise, however, be aware that you are in a residential area (on the poorer side) and there are lots of roosters about. You know what a rooster does at 4:00 a.m?...well multiply that times three. They are loose all over so there's nothing that Manfred or Margie can do about it. If you are a light sleeper you'll want ear plugs, if you don't want to wake up that early. The location is very convenient to Red Hook where there are these great Restaurants (Pesce, ITP, Coco Blue, Fish Tails, Duffy's Love Shack). If you want a nice beach, go to the Elysian up the road. All beaches are public. The beach at the Villa is rocky. Its o.k. for snorkeling if it isn't windy. The Villa has a charm to it, and as I said it is fully functional (just call Manfred if it isn't and they take care of it right away), but don't expect it to be sparkling new. It could use a renovation. We had a big rainstorm and several rooms leaked in water. We put down towels in those areas and had a bit of a musty smell afterwards but it went away after a couple days. As I haven't been to another VRBO here, I can't say whether the nightly rate matched the value, but it seemed o.k. Overall enjoyable stay, and the Soeffing's are very nice. Recommended, but not perfect.

Owner's Response: We appreciate the many nice things this visitor had to say about us and our villa; but we respectfully disagree with some of his statements. Traffic in St. Thomas can be chaotic, but if you have ever driven a car in Italy or around the “Arc de Triomphe” in Paris you will find it quite tame. Wild flocks of chicken and bands of sheep & goats (and in the case of St. John: donkeys) run freely all over the island – not just in St. Thomas but all the Caribbean Islands; and they pay little attention to the average income of the neighborhoods they roam in. Most people feel that this adds to the rural & rustic character of the region. What this visitor called “the poorer side” is actually a vibrant middle class West-Indian neighborhood with a very vigilant neighborhood watch, which makes the villa a very safe place to be (when we were living there with our family we never bothered with the automatic gate or locking the front door); but by no means does our neighborhood compare to places on St. John, where Country & Western stars and other celebrities have built 20 million dollar mansions. Part of the charm of Villa Ocean’s Edge and the reason for the spectacular views is its proximity to the ocean. The waves of the Caribbean Sea practically (but not really) lap against the foundations of the villa creating a soothing sound that just lulls you to sleep at night. However, the salt spray and the corrosive power of the salt laden air create a constant maintenance challenge. This environment can make a brand new paint job appear aged within 3 to 4 months. During a driving tropical downpour a trickle of water can come in by the sliding glass doors – especially when the wind comes from a certain direction, but that is a rare occurrence. We just completed a remodel project, which besides our master suite created a junior master suite and an enlarged guest bedroom (3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms). Most people will agree that the villa (especially in this particular environment) is very well maintained

Just returned from a weeklong stay Nov 7th-14th. Manfred and his son met us and guided us to this wonderful secluded villa. Centrally located and so close to Red Hook and Sapphire Beach Marina, this property has everything you could ask for. I did my homework, and everything on the property was functioning, so there was no need to call or bother him. However, I got the feeling that if something did arise, they would be prompt in reacting. The property is well-maintained, maybe a few minor things could be improved upon.....but nothing that would prevent us from renting again. Just the view from the pool is worth staying there....everything else is a bonus. Note*...do yourself a favor and rent a car. Explore St. Thomas and St. John. You won't be sorry! Driving on the left is a breeze!............Thanks Again Manfred, we will see you again!!!!!!!

Villa Ocean's Edge

Villa Ocean's Edge

After an extremely exhaustive search in trying to find a nice place for my family and I to stay in St. Thomas, I found one in Villa Ocean's Edge. I kept reading reviews about how nice Manfred and Margie were, but I didn't quite get it until I met them at the airport. Manfred is the definition of sincerity and really cares that you have a great trip. They put together a book with maps, guides to beaches, notes about their favorite restaurants and more. They checked in to make sure we were doing okay. When I slipped in the ocean and ended up with sea urchin splinters, they had tweezers there in 5 minutes, (OUCH!).

The house - is spacious. The pool is amazing, the view speaks for it self, the kitchen is equipped with all sorts of helpful items you wouldn't think to get. The grocery store is close by; shops, restaurants and bars are minutes away. Helpful hints:
Go out to eat at Pesce. Best food I had all week. A little pricey but as good as any restaurant we have back in LA.
Go out for drinks on Wednesday night in Red Hook. That's the local party night. With no open container laws, you can bounce from a nicer wine bar like XO to Duffy's which is a parking lot bar. We enjoyed both, and if you want local dancing, that's your best bet.

Rent a car! Getting around is easy and learning the island is a piece of cake. I wouldn't want to stay in Charlotte just because it's too touristy, but you need to hit the shops by the port and trying to cab it everywhere is silly and expensive.

We took the car ferry to St John for $54 (round trip) twice during our stay. The beaches are less crowded, the snorkeling is amazing, and it's an excuse to leave the house. We could have spent the whole trip as a group hanging out by the pool. If you hit St. John, go to Trunk Bay. It's as good as it gets. Leave early though, because the last boat back leaves at 6:00PM.

I had a great trip, and this house has everything. Location, price, attentive and caring owners, towels, washer/dryer, large fridge, coolers, etc., etc... Thanks Manfred, you deserve every kind word that comes your way.

Counting the days until we return...

My wife and I stayed here with our best friends and absolutely loved it. Waking up to the sun shinning over the ocean each morning as we floated in the pool was absolutely fantastic. The house has all the amenities (and ones you'd never think you'd find) that you'll ever need. Location, location, location!!! I lived in St. Thomas years ago and find the East End the place to be for the true island experience and Manfred and Margie's home is where it's at. I find having your own car beats relying on taxis, but driving on the island is not for the weak of heart. When staying here you're only minutes away from Red Hook and the ferry dock, Coki Beach and anything else worth seeing. The house itself is spacious and clean with laundry on site. A beautiful kitchen and common space seperate from the bedrooms is designed perfectly so not to disturb the late sleeper in the group. We're already counting the days until we get back there this year and look forward to seeing our new friends M & M.
Signed,
Kevin, Melissa, Joe & his wife.

Serenity at its best

What a great week I spent at Villa Oceans Edge. It was a special vacation for myself and my best friend. We left our husbands at home and ventured to St. Thomas for the first time. Manfred, Margie and Matt were just like family and took good care of us. Our husbands felt good that someone cared enough to look in on us since we were 2 women traveling alone. The villa was exactly what we wanted- peace and quiet and what a view! We spent most of our time by the pool, which was clean and just the right temperature. When we managed to get away from the pool we ventured to Red Hook and downtown by Safari taxi which was so easy and we enjoyed being in the company of the locals. We were so glad that we did not rent a car-too strerssful, it was more fun to let someone else do the driving. Secret Harbour which is very close to the villa was our favorite beach, it is worth spending the day there. There were many restaurants in Red Hook, we liked Molly Malones and Fish Tails since the dining areas were right on the waterfront. Good happy hour specials, we didn't have to spend a lot of money. If you are looking for a peaceful beautiful setting this villa is the place for you. I hope we will be able to return some time in the future.

I stayed at the Villa Ocean's Edge, for a week beginning April 25, 2012 with girlfriends. Let me list the Pro's and the Con's..

Pro's
Manfred Soeffing, the owner, he was polite, patient and accommodating to all of our needs.

Location, Location, Location, the villa is in Red Hook St Thomas, very close to the ferry, good restaurants, and beaches such as Coki, Sapphire and Linquist.

The Villa was great, the view of the ocean once you enter the property is spectacular!

The Villa was bascially fully stocked for our needs, which we did not expect, with items such as dish washing and laundry detergent, paper towels, seasoning and toiletries, which really helped.

Con's
The Villa needs to be more throughly cleaned between guests, under the beds and gas grill of note.

Bascially, we were more than satisfied with our choice in the Villa at Ocean's edge. I would recommend it to friends and family.
Owner's Response: We thank the reviewer for all the comments and apologize for the oversight. We had only 3 hours between departing guests and new arrivals to get the villa ready. In the rush we missed these items. We have talked to the cleaning crew and we are sure this will not be a problem in the future.

We recently returned from a week's stay and cannot say enough about our experience. Our party consisted of 2 adults and 5 girls, ages 9-14 and this fit our needs and wants perfectly. From the first email, responses were quick and booking was easy. We were met at the airport by Margie and Manfred who led us to the Villa and showed us where to shop. The view from the villa was amazing with easy access to the water below for snorkeling. The pool was a favorite of the kids, they loved being able to wake up and jump right in. We highly recommend a bit of climbing over the rocks to the secluded beach on the other side. This was a perfect trip and we look forward to staying at the Villa Oceans Edge again.

Rest and Relaxation in Paradise

We arrived by plane and were met by Manfred and Marge. We didn't rent a car, which was no problem. They were so kind to take us to a Sam's kind of store. We got everything for us to eat all week. There were 5 of us (our two daughters, 22 & 26, one of their friends, 25, and my husband and I, 53). The villa was wonderful. The kitchen had what we needed (a great electric skillet for pancakes, a blender for drinks, a grill for steaks, and plenty of pots and pans). The wireless Internet worked well for all of our iPhones and an iPad.

We had a few glitches (power went out, water stopped flowing, using the microwave and toaster would flip the breaker) but Manfred was always very responsive. We were never really inconvenienced. The generator did work while the power was out.

The view from the villa is magnificent. The snorkeling right there was wonderful. There was plenty to see: coral, sea sponges, urchins, tropical fish ... We really enjoyed the beach that is right there (over the rocks or a short walk). We were the only ones there most of the time.

We got around by cab. We used the cheap safari cabs often (if we were headed that way). It was a short walk to the main road. We also used Jeff, a taxi driver; he was always available when we needed him. We loved not driving. It was just so restful.

The villa is very air-conditioned. There is bottled water available.

We went to Coqi Beach, Trunk Bay, Magens Beach, and Coral World. We ate at Red Hook once; Molly Malone's was yummy.

We had a wonderful time. The villa was great. The kitchen is open to a big room with lots of seating and a flat screen TV. It was great. It has a great view!

We used the pool some but the ocean was more inviting!

We give the villa two thumbs up. It is well located and has everything you need. We loved it! Thanks to Manfred and Marge for sharing the villa with us.
