Lugnano / Umbria: Medieval Lugnano in Teverina, listed as one of the most beautiful hilltop villages or 'borghi' in Italy, boasts many beautiful churches and convents and fine, noble buildings or 'Palazzi'. The jewel of Lugnano is with any doubt the Collegiata di S. Maria Assunta, one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque art in Central Italy and dating back to the XII century. Palazzo del Pennone, the palace of the medieval 'podestà' or village ruler, and the ancient convents of St. Francis (XIII century) and of the Capucines (XVI) boast beautiful architecture and precious fresco paintings. A trip to Umbria would not be complete without enjoying its cuisine. Excellent food and wine are just as much a part of the region's charm as its forests, frescoes, and castles. Lugnano is listed among the 'Città dell'Olio' or the villages of olive oil. Extra-virgin oil is the most typical product of Lugnano and can be purchased at the town's oil mills.
