A comfortable apartment for a family of 5
Submitted: January 6, 2011
Stayed: November 2010
Bottom line: Enjoyed our stay. Would stay there again.
Pros:
* Apt kept in very good condition, very roomy. Beds were comfy, great kitchen and dining/livingroom. It was really like a home away from home.
* Two bathrooms, both with a bathtub. One bathroom is roomy with a separate shower stall in addition to the bathtub, which had a built-in sauna.
* Owner was very nice and helpful before during and after our stay. He gave us latitude to check out late. Paid with PayPal.
* Standard SUV fit in garage parking space. (Parking on the street not always easy to find. Sometimes you need to park half a block away.)
* Big flat-screen TV with built-in DVD player in living room above gas fireplace.
* If you keep kosher, this will matter to you: flatware can be kashered, as can a couple of the pots. There is a glass baking pan as well. The oven was self-cleaning. Lots of glasses for drinking. Two stainless steel sinks.
Cons:
* The phone didn't work at first. We had to rely on cell phones a few days until owner brought a new phone. Those few days cost us.
* We have 3 children ages 9, 7 and 1, with lots of toys and baby stuff always around. The owner asked us not to put this stuff directly on the coffee table, but to cover it, because it is very valuable and he was worried about it getting scratched. Our toddler took the covering off a lot, so that added a lot of stress, to constantly make sure that the covering was back on the coffee table.
* The furnace in the apartment can be very noisy. My wife is a light sleeper and sometimes we had to choose between warmth and quiet. Chicago in Nov/Dec suggested warmth was more important.
* No curtains in living room+many big windows=privacy issues. People on the street waved to us.
Notes:
* Broadband, but no WiFi. We brought a long network cable. The router is not in a convenient location otherwise.
* The pitter-patter of our kids' feet was audible in other apts. Only once did anyone complain, though, when the kids were really wild.
* The owner starts you off with some toilet paper and paper towels etc., and whatever previous guests left.
* We didn't feel comfortable having some friends over because they also had little kids and we were worried that they might damage the coffee table or some other part of the apartment.
* It's two floors above the building entrance, no elevator.
* When I notified the owner of problem with phone, he came as promptly as possible with a new one.
