Prior to sending my check, I had asked if the property was safe for two young boys, ages 2 1/2 and 5. I was assured that it was. This home is not suitable for families with young children! The deck is not fenced in properly with a drop of 10 feet or more. The outside of the house has not been kept up. The inside of the house is loaded with nick-nacks and other items not suitable for little hands. When my daughter first arrived, Harlan yelled at the boys for touching the pillows and other items in the house. His language is also not suitable for young children. Harlan often throws the F word about. The TV/satellite did not work. Only one channel came in. My daughter mentioned this, but nothing was ever done about it. No idea where the washer and dryer was. There was a boom box, not a stereo. My daughter only stayed two nights. It was that bad. I asked Harlan to return half of the rent because I thought that was fair. He never returned my calls, but I noticed he promptly cashed my check. There is a nice view and it is close to the beach. If I didn't know, from prior experience, how lovely Jonesport is and how nice most of the residents are, I would never return after renting this home.
Owner's Response: We would like to respond to Ms. J's remarks in the order that she leveled them.
First, the only question we were asked was if "the house is far enough away from the road to be safe for a 2 1/2 year old?" I responded that we have a large front and back yard. The deck is clearly visible in our photo, yet no questions were ever asked reguarding her fear for the safety of the children on the deck. In addition, the outside of the house is painted, maintained and fixed up every year as required by a home on the Maine Coast.
Secondly, the inside of the house does have many knick knacks-but they were gladly moved out of the way by the owner shortly after the guests arrived.
Thirdly, as far as any profane language is concerned...I have known Harlan for 24 years and have been frequently present when welcoming our guests and have never heard anything close to what Ms. J is claiming, much less ever in front of children.
In addition the TV/satellite works fine and was demonstrated to the tennants. If there was any question,we are always open to tending to the requests and questions of our guests. The Washer/Dryer has always been in the basement and no other tennants have had trouble finding them.
We offer a boom box, instead of a stereo, so as to make it available to go outside. However in this era of ipods, a sterreo is practically obsolete.
Our attorney wrote a letter to Ms. J indicating the fixed costs of her leaving without any notice, and the letter indicated that we expect our tenants to have "age approriate adult supervision" for the youngsters. When Harlan entered the home, he found each of the children jumping on the couch with a decorative lighthouse in each of thier hands.
We have had many, many families rent our home without ever having any mishaps.
