A delightful retreat

We spent a very happy month at Boxwood House, while visiting family and friends in the Bay area. The location was excellent, an easy drive from the Bay Bridge. From there we could go west across the bay to the city, or choose to drive through the Caldecott Tunnel to the East Bay. Alameda itself is charming, and offers a wonderful mix of history, architecture, relaxation, parks, beaches, bike trails, the aircraft carrier Hornet, (now a museum,) and plenty of interesting ethnic restaurants. Off the Grid food trucks visit Alameda every Saturday! Marti and Will, the owners of Boxwood House, were so generous with their attention to our needs and wants. We heartily recommend this rental for couples, business people, and families. Only caution is that the apartment has many fascinating objets d'art that very small children may want to examine closely. You would have to put them up high, out of reach.

A week in Alameda

Despite the bad weather, our week in Alameda was pleasant. Took the ferry to San Fran, and explored the hidden jewel that is Alameda. The apartment was cozy and well appointed with everything we needed in the kitchen. The owners were very accommodating friendly. I would most definitely stay again with hopefully better weather. Alameda is a little known secret.

Ideal Spot for Parents of the Bride

In late June 2012, we traveled from Columbus, Ohio, to California to attend our daughter's wedding in Berkeley. At our daughter's suggestion, we made arrangements to stay at Boxwood House for the wedding week. Our apartment there was delightful, and our hosts, Marti and Will, welcomed us like family. They were always available to answer any questions, or assist us with any requests.
The apartment was charming, spotless, and comfortable. It was furnished with beautiful antiques and vintage pieces, giving each room its own unique, cozy glow. We enjoyed walking the neighborhood to admire the lovely old homes and gardens. It was fun shopping and dining in nearby "downtown" Alameda. We found it quite convenient to take the ferry from Alameda to San Francisco to sight-see for the day.
We enjoyed our stay at Boxwood House immensely and would give it the highest rating. Will and Marti were gracious and attentive hosts. We look forward to returning to Alameda and Boxwood House often. We unreservedly recommend The Boxwood to others traveling to San Francisco, Oakland, Alameda, or Berkeley area. Curt and Marcia

A Most Wonderful Apartment

We had the good fortune to rent this garden apartment for three months. The apartment is well-furnished and contained everything we needed for our extended stay. The neighborhood is lovely.
It is hard to find words to describe how accommodating and pleasant, Will and Marti were to us. If we needed something, they were always there to help us. They created a very comfortable environment and we truly felt as if we were "at home".

Garden apartment nice place

Communication was great, we could allways talk with host and they were allways available. The neighborhood was great, very nice area with beautiful homes and pretty trees around. Felt like the neighbors were very friendly, one even helped me repair my bike. The apartment was clean and it had wonderfull expensive linens on the bed and big fluffy towels in the bath. The owners are great and are the friendlliest nicest host you could emagine, they went beond being helpful and did us some very nice favors. If you want great trusting people for a host this is the place for you. I can only say that the entry was a bit narrow to get to the apartment, too many flower pots and such. I want to mention that the apartment was very quit, the host live upstairs but you will not hear a peep not even foot steps. Very nice and quiet place to stay. The apartment is very well equpped with all the things you would need just like your home, we did not need anything the apartment did not have. Nice place would recomend to a friend.

Long Term Stay was fantastic

I convinced my company to rent from Marti and Will rather that placing me in an extended stay hotel. This stay happened in the winter of 2006 (sorry to take so long to write this note). The apartment, the owners, the neighborhood and location could not have been better. Nightly walks to help "wind down" at the end of the day were easy and interesting due to the variety of architectural style and foliage in the neighborhood. Most nights found me walking between 25 and 60 blocks just for fun. I'm a midwesterner and felt safe everywhere I went on the Island.

The property is located within 30-45 minutes of all that the area has to offer-including Napa, Half Moon Bay, the entire city of San Francisco and more-Trader Joes was less than 5 minutes away!

The place is comfortable, quiet and close to everything that anyone could want. I especially appreciated how warm and welcoming Marti and Will were during my many trips to the Bay area. If I EVER have a reason to be in the area for any length of time I would call Marti and Will to reserve and be really bummed if this place was unavailable.

Again-I regret not writing sooner. Thanks again for being such great hosts-

Thank you for your nice review!
When you come back you will find that we have now opened our back garden to guests. There is a nice sitting area where you can bring friends for a glass of wine or just relax and unwind with a good book.
We look forward to seeing you in the future.

Lovely

Lovely city, lovely property, lovely owners. My wife and I recently returned to Alameda (after having lived there from 1996-2004) to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and the trip could not have been more perfect. And, one of the main reasons was the Boxwood House apartment. We were met by the owner upon arrival and was made to feel very welcome, and you feel at home the minute you walk in. It is very nicely appointed, the kitchen has absolutely everything you need and the bed is so comfortable, it was difficult getting out of it in the mornings. The apartment is located in a beautiful part of a beautiful city--perfect for long walks just admiring the flowers, plants and Victorian homes. If you are in need of a refreshing respite from your current environment, go to Alameda and stay at this property.

Owner's Response: We certainly are located in a lovely neighborhood, with lots of wonderful Victorian homes featuring beautiful gardens ... it truly is a neighborhood for people who like to walk and enjoy the architecture or take a walk a long the beach taking in San Francisco's magnificent skyline.

We stayed for one month in the garden apartment. It was immacuate, extremely well furnished, warm and restful. The best thing (in our opinion) was the experience of relating to the owners. No detail was missed; they extended themselves beyond what one might expect and truly cared about our comfort. They did this without "bugging" us. The bed is amazingly comfortable and the bedroom's "black out" draperies allow a very peaceful, long sleep. Just around the corner, you can see the stunning views of the city of San Francisco. The neighborhood has friendly people, and if you come close to a holiday you will greatly enjoy the festive decorations and celebration on this quiet, little street.
We very strongly recommend this property; especially it's wonderful, honest owners, Marti and Will.

A Perfect Place for Two!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Boxwood House. The apartment was very clean and cozy, and the kitchen contained everything we could possibly need for cooking. The owner even made sure that we had coffee, sugar and cream for our first few mornings in the apartment. The apartment is located in a great neighborhood. Our bedroom overlooked a front yard filled with beautiful flowers. There were more than enough thick white towels in the linen closet. There isn't a lot of light in the apartment, because it's located on the lower level of the house, but it was fine, since we were out most days. We will definitely stay at Boxwood House again in the future!
