I was getting a bit nervous when we were driving to the house because it seemed so rural and desolate in the middle of a lava field, however; what we found was a true gem. The house was gorgeous, the views spectacular and it was also designed to be very comfortable. I loved their furniture, beds and bathrooms. If a Big Island visitor wants to see a lot of the island and not just Kona, this is a great central place to stay. We also LOVED the Punul'u Bakery in the nearby town. They had a huge menu. Their cold sandwiches and pasta salad were homemade and really good.

This lovely home is so comfortable, so well designed and so clean, it was hard to leave. I have never even considered what it might be like to live in Hawaii, but we loved it. The photos cannot possibly do justice to the experience of staying here for a week. The sunsets from the deck, the stars at night, the quiet, the fresh air, and sleeping with the patio screens wide open. I have never slept so good. Amazing. And not humid at all. Very very comfortable.
Questions were answered promptly by the owner and caretaker. Property is in secluded location off the highway but close to shopping area. A short drive in either direction gets you to many different and varied activities. I would definitely recommend this property.

I thought this house was going to be nice, but it was even better than I imagined. This home was beautifully appointed, very clean and comfortable. We felt right at home here and had everything we needed. It is so quite and private in this area. We really enjoyed that. The landscape was very unique, being in the middle of the lava fields. We appreciated having the markets so close and also took advantage of the lower gas prices in Ocean View. Jo Dean made the entire rental process easy and she was very nice to answer all of my questions. Would not hesitate to stay here again or recommend it to anyone.

My husband and I didn't know really what to expect when we came here. The pictures looked great and the area looked beautiful. We were delighted as soon as we drove up and even more so when we opened the front door. Everything has been thought of by the owners. The master bedroom is HUGE and boasts gorgeous views. Very comfortable bed! The master bathroom is large and fully appointed. The living room, kitchen and dining area are stocked with everything you could ask for. There are even beach towels and coolers for your use. We celebrated new years in the hot tub sipping champagne and looking at the stars. It is quiet and remote - which is perfect when you want to get away from things. Couldn't have been better. We will reccomend to our family and friends. Stores nearby - great information available. Just terrific all the way around.

If you would like a bit of tranquility at the end of your adventurous day; then this is the place to R E L A X ! The surreal lava landscape had its' own beauty, Mark and Jo Dean's home is extremely well-maintained and comfortable--it feels like home! And, YES, as someone else noted, the pictures on VRBO do not do it justice. Beautiful accomadations!

In fact, one day we decided we were on "hiking/touring/beach" overload and just had a quiet day at the house. We sat for hours on the lanai, sipping coffee, reading...it rejuvinated us for another 12 hour day the next day. That's HOW comfortable the accomadations are!

A wonderful benefit was the hot tub--in which you can view the night sky without ANY light obstructions! We had a tiny snafu with the hot tub--but it was rectified before we could barely "blink an eye." Snafus happen--it's how the individuals react that's important. We were extrememly impressed with the level of committment Mark and Jo Dean have to their renters!

We also enjoyed conversations with locals from both the local markets--by the end of the week we actually felt like we "belonged."

Green Sand Beach is a MUST SEE! We are avid hikers, so for us we wanted the 2.5 mile hike to the beach with a few stops in tide pools, etc... . Also, Volcanoes Nationa Park...you can't do it all--just make memories doing what you can do.

The location is PERFECT for travels both north and south of Kona. We would also recommend a jeep or 4WD if you're adventurous and want to explore some beautiful "off the beaten path" beaches.

We had a most wonderful three weeks‘ stay here. Everything’s perfectly and luxuriously furnished, the kitchen and its equipment is outstanding (we’re passionate cooks) and the setting is very quiet. The very few neighbors are far away, so you can completely relax on the secluded lanai that offers a great view of the ocean. The house is very spacious, even more so than the pictures seem to indicate, and the porch as well as the sun deck are huge. The hot tub is a wonderful asset, as is the entertainment system which allows you to listen to music in all rooms and even on the porch, thus also in the tub. There’s dish network and TV sets in the living room and in the bedrooms, so you can also just relax inside whenever you don’t want to be active. The house is equipped with everything you need to enjoy and relax! As to the weather, our stay coincided with an unusual amount of rain and clouds for June on the islands, but most of the time it was dry or even sunny in Ocean View while it was pouring on the Hilo side and cloudy and misty in Kailua-Kona and Kealakekua! To us, it turned out that this strip of coastline – and maybe the northwestern Kohala coast – had the best and most stable weather on the entire island. The house is about an hour’s drive to Kailua-Kona where you’ll find everything you need in terms of shopping, but there are also two very well-stocked markets just up the road that carry lots of fresh vegetables, fish and meats, and pretty much all you need for catering to yourselves. To Hilo, you’ll be driving just a little longer, so the place is perfect for exploring both sides of the island. Volcanoes N.P., Macadamia nut farms, Green Sands Beach and South Point, Coffee farms, Pu’uhonua o Honaunau, and Kealakekua Bay are all very close. All these main attractions of the Big Island can be very easily reached with a short drive from the house. The owners are truly wonderful people, and will do and arrange everything for making your stay as perfect as possible. You really always feel cared for, and anything you need help with, including arranging for someone to quickly stop by and assist you, is promptly taken best care of. When we arrived, the house was spotless and in perfect shape. Maid service can also be arranged flexibly, and is both affordable and impeccable. We travel quite a bit, and almost exclusively rent a home instead of staying in hotels – and this place was truly one of the best we ever had! Mahalo nui loa!

Mahalo Mark and Jo Dean! My wife and I spent a week here for our honeymoon and didn't want to leave! The house is spectacular, and as other people have said, the pictures don't do it justice. It is very luxurious but also homey and comfortable! We loved the kitchen and did most of our own cooking during our stay. Jo Dean was a pleasure to work with and everything we needed was provided. The landscape in the area was definately a new experience (an old lava flow), there is virtually no vegitation, but it is extremely quiet and peaceful. The nights are pitch black and you can see every star in the sky, awesome to sit in the hot tub and just relax. It seemed that we did a lot of driving, although this house is in a good location to tour both sides of the island easily. There is easy access to the main highway and a great little grocery store right up the hill. The weather was great and the house is laid out perfectly to shield the lanai from the breezes so you can always enjoy sitting outside taking in the spectacular views. I would definately recomend a stay at Mark and Jo Dean's house! The moment you open the beautiful front door you feel like royalty. We rented a Jeep for our stay and are glad we did! We were able to explore many places we otherwise wouldn't have or would have spent many hours hiking instead of a few minutes driving... like the green sands beach for example!

This trip was a gift to my Mother for her 60th birthday. She had never been to the islands and boy did we manage to WOW her..starting with this house! Let me start off by saying that Jo Dean was a dream to work with. She was always available and willing to answer any of our questions and was a delight in every contact. Now…the house….pictures do NOT do this home justice. It is an elegant home, but very comfortable to be in. The kitchen is magnificent (we are a family of cooks) and we found it a dream to work in. The beds are supportive and comfortable, bathrooms magnificent, and the lanai area where we spent a good majority of our time, exquisite. The entertainment system was a sweet and wonderful surprise as we had it going out on the lanai and the hot tub first thing in the morning definitely spoiled us for any future travel. Should we ever find ourselves in Ocean View again, you’ll find us in this house. Would I recommend it to a friend? YES!! Is there anything that we were in need of? No. Of course, it can’t all perfect, so the only thing I would add……One of those water switches on the shower head. The kind that stop the water flow to conserve it. Similar to a switch on a lamp. My mother also wanted me to mention that she thinks the owners must be tall as the shower head is up higher than standard. No one else in our group had any trouble, but then she’s only around five feet and a bit. I told her I would put it in our review. Done.
