Horrible condition for an upscale property
After years of wonderful experiences renting through VRBO, I was appalled at the condition of this house. While the setting and pool were spectacular, the house has been neglected for many years. My family was greeted by trash under the front steps and the back deck. The house smells like urine. the carpets, curtains and shower curtain were badly stained. The doors were difficult to open and close and doorknobs were falling off. The stair railing was loose due to a makeshift attempt to secure it. The kitchen supplies were bottom of the line, old and inadequate. There was not a decent can opener or other common kitchen utensils. Plates were chipped and glassware was insufficient. The beach chairs were unusable. The list could go on. When I complained to the owner it seems he corrected the size of the house in his ad (it read 4000 sq ft when I rented it) and said everything could have been fixed with better communication, which is far from the truth. The only things updated were the air conditioning and the flat screen TV. The DVD player did not work. He called basic maintenance, like replacing the siding and a broken refrigerator, upgrades. He offered a discount next year but refused any refund. Anyone who could charge the rental fee I paid for a house in this condition I would not want to rent from again. If you consider renting one of this owner's houses, I strongly suggest you visit it first.
Owner's Response: I have 3 seashore homes that I have rented for 20 years about 20 weeks per year. That totals 1200 weeks rented. I have never before had a negative comment.
This house was professionally cleaned before the tenant arrived and fresh towels and linens were provided by a linen service. Neither the professional and well supervised cleaning crew, the laundry company, the prior tenant, nor the owner noted any problems with the house before the tenant arrived.
I leave a greeting letter on the counter and have a framed "greeting letter" on the wall. Each letter requests that the tenant call me, my handy-man, the cleaning service or the laundry service if there is any problem. Contrary to the tenant's comment this house has a new refrigerator installed the week before the tenant arrived, new Weber grill earlier in the summer, new flooring in the hallway on the first floor, new Sanyo air conditioner units in each room, a new washer-dryer, new dish washer, new stove, new siding, new pool heater and chlorinator.... all in the last few years. This house has not been ignored. Plans for this winter are to refinish the hardwood floors and renovate the half bath on the first floor.
For my 3 properties, prospective tenants are advised to view all pictures on the Homeaway site and more pictures which are available by contacting me.
The house is open for inspection any Saturday by appointment. The best way to insure that a tenant's expectations meet reality is to visit the property before renting.
To recap, the tenant did not visit before renting; I do not know if she looked at the pictures on this website or my own. She did not call to report any of the alleged problems in her review. As she reports after leaving she demanded a refund and only after I refused she then posted a very negative and inaccurate review
35 Lighthouse is a classic example of 1960s shore-modern summer house. It has been updated and has a terrific heated pool and is a fabulous location. I have a very attentive crew that can remedy any problem that arises. Compared to other waterfront homes with pools, it is priced reasonably. Best method to insure that the house meets expectations is to arrange a visit any Saturday. Please contact me if you would like to discuss further.
