Photos and Description of the Diever vacation farmhouse rental
Farmhouse, 5 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 10-12)

A large, well-equipped & tastefully furnished Dutch farmhouse dating from 1890 situated in the center of unspoiled Diever village. Located on the edge of the Drents-Friese Wold (6100 hectares), one of the largest national parks of the Netherlands, with 32 marked walks & numerous cycle paths. Also situated close by to National Park Dwingelderveld (3692 hectares) - the largest moorland on the European Continent - with its 60 kms of walking trails & 40 kms of bicycle paths.

Local activities in this area of outstanding natural beauty include walking, bicycling, horse riding & birdwatching. Sailing & fishing can be enjoyed at Giethoorn (the Venice of the North). The provincial capital at Assen is just 25 minutes away. While Emmen (world-famous zoo), the city of Groningen ('shop till you drop') & the German border are all less than an hour's drive away. Picnic in the forest, take a dip in a forest bathing pool or go by horseback along one of the many trails. Diversity on your doorstep!

Location description:

Diever village, located at the south-westerly tip of the province of Drenthe (approx. 2 hrs east of Amsterdam), is adjacent to the largest forest in the Netherlands - perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding.

Also renowned for its Shakespearian plays held in the open-air theatre during the Summer months, Diever is at the heart of unspoilt rural Dutch countryside.

There is a supermarket, good variety of shops, cafe-pubs, restaurants and bank.

A Dutch National Tourist office is also nearby with a wealth of information on the surrounding area.

Other activities:

Forests for biking, hiking, swimming, fishing are all nearby.

Local events:

A market selling everything from clothes to local products is held in Diever every Monday throughout the Summer months.

Tourist attractions:

Days out to the Giethoorn lakes (the 'Venice of the North'), Emmen zoo, museums, attraction parks. 'Shop till you drop' in Groningen & the German border are just 45 minutes away!

Accessibility:

Diever is easily accessible from both Amsterdam Schiphol and Eindhoven airports (both 2 hours distance). A car is recommended (rental cars also available at both airports), although public transport (bus) just a few minutes walk away with links to the surrounding villages and towns. Nearest train station is at Beilen (20 minutes away)

Using the farmhouse as a base to explore the Netherlands:

Are you looking for a central base in which to explore the Netherlands?

- apart from being able to explore the north and east of the country with ease, ‘Under the Oaks’ is also very centrally located for visiting both the south / south-west of the Netherlands, as well as the west of the country. The travelling times for reaching these areas are considerably shorter than travelling via the highway network in the west of the country, as our roads and highways here in the north and east are less congested. Being situated in the south-west corner of Drenthe, the farmhouse is only 15 minutes to the borders of Overijssel and Friesland, with the highway just 7 miles away!

Driving times from Diever to other parts of the Netherlands?

- it’s less than 2 hours from Diever to the southern city of Eindhoven (the Belgian border is just south of there).

A visit to Amsterdam while staying in Diever?

- many of our guests drive the 45 minutes to the outskirts of Almere (Almere Buiten), and then take the short train journey from there into Amsterdam city. It’s much easier to park your car outside the city and use the fast and efficient public transport from there!

Wishing to explore Rotterdam and the Hague in the south-west of the country as well?

- these cities are also just 90-120 minutes away. Again, travelling times from our region to these cities is faster than from many other parts of the country, as the highway network via Zwolle to Utrecht has lighter traffic.

Under the Oaks - additional notes:

Complimentary welcome pack of groceries provided on arrival containing bread, butter, milk, jam, cheese, eggs, sugar, coffee, tea, wine, beer, orange juice and breakfast cereal. If you would like anything else in particular to be included, please let us know.

Around the farmhouse:

There is ample off-street parking.

For your use there is a private patio with chairs, tables and parasol supplied, plus gardens with a trampoline (shared).

A BBQ and tumble-dryer is available for your use.

Bicycle-hire is available locally (which can also be arranged before arrival), with secure storage onsite.

Guests have exclusive use of the front farmhouse which adjoins the owner's property. The house is entirely self contained with two entrances for full privacy.

Please note that 'Under the Oaks' is a non-smoking accommodation.

It is our pleasure to be of assistance to you during your stay and our priority to make sure that you will have a pleasant vacation. We are happy to offer any help on preparing your trip. Please email with any questions you may have!

About The Owner

Greetings from Diever! We are David and Monique Samson. In 2004 we decided to relocate our family to peaceful rural Drenthe, one of the most beautiful parts of the Netherlands.

The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 2004
Why The Owner chose Diever

In the small village of Diever we found the perfect location to begin a vacation home: restaurants and shops at walking distance, as well as two National Parks close by (including the largest area of moorland in Europe).

What makes this farmhouse unique

The many attractions in the area and the outstanding natural beauty of South-West Drenthe are here for all to enjoy. Not forgetting the forests, lakes, dunes, hiking & riding trails, parks for the kids, the many museums & places of historic interest, as well as the ease of reaching the surrounding towns and cities.

Our stay at the Farmhouse in Diever was wonderful! It truly felt like a 'home away from home'! We loved that we could walk to the local restaurants and shops....we rented bikes and rode on one of the many bike trails for hours exploring the countryside! Also, loved feeding the horse apples, carrots and bread and waking to the sound of birds each morning! The owners of the house are so helpful and kind and we felt very welcome... How now to have wine and a bag of groceries for us when we arrived!! We were close enough to anywhere in Holland that we wanted to visit ...just a short drive to see the rest of the country...although, we felt so comfortable in the home , we just loved exploring the local area! I will recommend this home to everyone! It was the most wonderful vacation!

Owner's Response: Hi Laurie, Nancy, Anna, Martin and Cliff,
You're very welcome! It was good that you saw so much during your stay, & yes, Diever is within easy reach of Amsterdam (by car or train). Glad you also enjoyed visting our 'Venice of the North' at Giethoorn, with its lakes and canal systems, as well as the nearby WWII camp at Westerbork, as you were very interested in tracing the history of Anne Frank & her family while here. And yes, the little horse in the field adjoining the farmhouse loves our guests' apples & carrots! We would all like to thank you again for coming over to Drenthe & seeing the real Netherlands!

Very happy to hear that you all enjoyed yourselves so much in Diever and that you managed to see so much of our local attractions in between visiting your relatives here (even using the farmhouse as a base when you travelled for a few days to France).

My family just finished a stay at Under the Oaks in Diver, NL, and had an absolutely wonderful time. There was nothing that we needed for our stay that wasn't provided for in the house. The accommodations completely exceeded our expectations! It was so spacious and well equiped! David and Monique are fantastic hosts who truly want their guests to get the best experience possible in the Diever area. The wealth of information that they can provide and assistance was fantastic! We can't wait to go back! A gorgeous house, in a beautiful setting with the grocery store a few doors down, the butcher and baker also just a short walk down the street, and a quick stroll to the ice cream parlour make the setting absolutely perfect! The location is also so central to many activities in the area! We can't wait to go back and visit again on our next trip to Holland. If you are considering staying at 'Under the Oaks', don't hesitate any longer! You can't go wrong with this place!

"The spacious beautiful home far exceeded our expectations.. The complementary bottle of wine and breakfast goodies was so much appreciated. David was extremely helpful to us as we had many questions regarding the area. Diever is absolutely the perfect village, with nearby restaurants on cute cobble stoned roads..you really get a good taste of the culture that a large city could not touch."

"As international visitors it was pleasing to arrive to our home and find it fully prepared for our stay. The warm and friendly welcome we received and the welcome pack of food and goodies exceeded our expectations. This was followed up with handy advice on what this community had to offer us. We really loved the local shops, walking/cycling tracks and the genuine warmth of the local people. We look forward to returning again in the future. Jeff & Marcelle - Kuranda, Australia"

"The accomidations were perfect for a family of nine. The location was ideal for biking Drenthe which is why we came to the Diever area. David and Monique couldnt have been better hosts, they helped us through our stay in so many ways to make sure we enjoyed our vacation instead of having to do household chores. They took care of us well beyond our expectations. I would not only recommend Under the Oaks to friends, but we hope to go back again in our future. Gary Rast"
