A magnificent 5 1/2-acre peninsula is the site of this historic island property. The gated estate remains in the same family and was completely renovated in 2005 to a high standard of updated luxury, reviving the holiday magic enjoyed at Gun Point decades ago. Gun Point's exceptional location within a private estate on this promontory provides a profound sense of peace and solitude. That is not to say that your holiday cannot be filled with fun escapades and adventures, reviving the spirit of Gun Point's past....The very top of Gun Point was long ago used as a cannon emplacement which fired out to sea at pirate ships venturing too near the coastline! Now a nature trail leads to this serene and breezy spot for cocktails at sunset, with superb sea views of passing yachts and green islets and cays. This very English estate was built in 1969 around Gun Point's original 18th-century gunpowder store; as there were no roads in those days, all building materials had to be brought in by sea to Gun Point's jetty and then trotted to the site by a donkey named Liz. Nowadays you can just wander down the path from the pool deck to the same private jetty and swim or snorkel in the pristine ocean among the vibrant reef and sea-life....see brain coral, elk-horn coral, parrot fish, needle fish, blue and yellow tang, angel fish to name but a few, and if you are lucky the occasional turtle or lobster....Or rent some kayaks or stand-up paddle-boards to cruise around.....Now that's the stuff holiday memories are made of! There is a little boat house by the dock which makes a perfect spot for a romantic sunset drink on it's rooftop deck. A separate path leads to the east and down to Smugglers Cove, one of the most sheltered beaches on the North Shore, ideal for children and anyone not craving the excitement of the world-class surf at nearby Apple Bay.
Most importantly, Gun Point's renovation was designed to make the villa a relaxing and comfortable space for families and friends to gather and spend quality time together......with that in mind, the spaces flow easily into each other so that everyone can mingle and chat as they cook, dine, sun-bathe, read, swim, play board games or anything else they choose. The decor throughout is calming, comfortable and 'beachy', offering no formal pretensions. The gardens are well established and feature indigenous plants throughout....colourful bougainvillea and oleander, night-scented jasmine, soothing aloe plants and beautiful frangipani to name but a few.
The Villa itself is comprised of 2 buildings. Enter the glass front doors to a spacious living room and kitchen. The living room has a 33' flat screen TV with cable and DVD player. There is also a Sonos dock connected to Bose speakers inside and on the porch. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, a wine cooler and a large sociable island which is ideal for chatting and hanging out while preparing a fabulous lunch or dinner. The two sets of large sliding doors open out to the covered porch which runs the length of the building. Here can be found the gas grill, informal dining table which seats up to 12 and comfortable seating arrangements for relaxing in the shade. (Also a perfect space for in-house massages and spa treatments!) The pool deck and infinity-edge, low-chemical pool are just a few steps down and offer cushioned teak sun-loungers and a fresh-water shower. This entire side of the property looks out over the pool deck to a stunning view of Jost Van Dyke and various little islands on the horizon, near and far.
In true eccentric English form the bedrooms have all been named....From the covered porch, you can enter Union, (the Master Suite) which has a mahogany king size bed, AC, cable TV, en-suite bathroom with shower and a private deck with a couple of chairs for a little alone time.
Also accessed from the porch is the second bedroom, Jack, which has 2 twin beds which can be made up as a king. It has AC, en-suite bathroom with shower, and a door and short corridor connecting it to the master suite which makes it ideal for parents with young children.
The original stone pathway leads from the front door to the guest house just a few yards away. Here is found the rest of the accommodation, all overlooking Smugglers Cove and up along the North Shore of Tortola.....
Fish has a king size bed, AC, en-suite bathroom with shower and a wall of glass doors leading to a quiet, private covered porch with seating for 2, overlooking Smugglers Cove.
Chips (the 4th bedroom) is identical in layout to Fish but has twin beds which can be made up as a king.
Salt is the 5th bedroom and is accessed through Chips and shares the bathroom with Chips. This makes it ideal for parents with young children or for a nanny and children to stay in these 2 rooms. Salt has a full-size bed and AC.
Pepper is the 6th 'bedroom'. It has been converted from an office downstairs from Fish and Chips and is smaller than the other bedrooms. It has a full-size bed, AC and a small 1/2 bath. The shower is private but is accessed outside the room a few steps away at the other end of the building.
Background on the BVIs....The majority of the Virgin Islands were formed by intense volcanic activity millennia ago. They are steep-sided with tall, forest-covered hills which form a beautiful backdrop of green.
Tortola is around 12 miles long and 2 miles wide. White-sand beaches and over 40 miles of crystal clear water surround it. The Gun Point villa is located on private land at the western end of the island. West End Ferry Terminal is just 10 minutes away, perfect if you are arriving by ferry or water-taxi from St Thomas. Opposite the ferry dock we have the beautiful Soper's Hole Marina (also just 10 minutes away), which offers a waterside restaurant, well-stocked grocery store and the best gift shopping on the island. This is the best spot for day-sails and boat rental pick-ups.
To the East is Long Bay, a mile-long white sand beach (5 minute drive), and Apple Bay (10 minute drive) for the avid surfers! There are many good restaurants within 15 minutes drive, choose from fine-dining at The Sugar Mill, low-key authentic West-Indian dishes at Palm's Delight, best sunset views on the island at Bananakeet....and everything inbetween!
Please don't hesitate to call or email with any questions. We manage Gun Point and live on island so we can arrange cars, provisioning, boat trips, water taxis, chefs, spas services and anything else you can think of that Tortola has to offer! We are able to coordinate yoga retreats, weddings or any other gathering you can think of.
