For a quiet vacation
This is a lovely home on a quiet street with a beautiful view from the top floor. We enjoyed our stay and appreciated the owner's quick response to issues we encountered. The golf cart was an added bonus.
We had never been to Harbor Island before, and would like to share these tips:
1. Go food shopping at the Publix in St. Helena (Sea Island Pkwy) before you get to the house. There is a small market, 2-3 restaurants, and a kayak rental place just outside the HI neighborhood, but for major shopping, the closest place is Publix. There was food in the fridge and pantry, but we didn't want to dip into the owners' groceries. They provided plenty of towels, shampoo, etc.
2. Get a community map at the security gate, and ask them to highlight the beach access points. As you drive around the neighborhood, you will see places to fish and crab.
3. Check the locks. My family stepped out on the 2nd floor screened porch upon arrival and were promptly locked out. Luckily, we were able to flag down security, who found a neighbor with a spare key. The neighbor was our hero, who came and fixed the air conditioner the very next day.
4. Visit Hunting Island State Park - it's just down the road. The Harbor Island beach can be a little muddy and warm, and low tide occurs during the day. For a fee, you can spend the day on the Hunting Island beach, which has white sands, cool water, and lots of space.
