Norse Hill Estate takes you back in time to the Port Antonio playground of royalty and celebrities of the early 1900's. Discerning European royalty, celebrities and Fortune 500 CEO's are still our neighbors today, though other properties are barely visible. The amenities of the estate have been updated to the 21st century but the luxurious magnificence lives on. With your butler, housekeeper, chef and gardeners, the gorgeous villa with its striking architecture, period furniture and decor worthy of an art museum, the fantasy of gracious living becomes a reality. The gated property overlooks the turquoise ocean of Port Antonio on Jamaica’s north coast. The villa has over 4,000 sq.ft. (372 sq. m) filled with furniture, artwork, carpets and Asian treasures brought by the original owners from their former Hong Kong residence to Norse Hill Estate.
The house itself is a marvel of stone, wood and glass. The large entry foyer leads to a grand spiral staircase over a fountain. An oversized living room opens wide to the rear grounds and sea view. The formal dining room opens on each side to the same glorious views and fresh breezes. The architect designed the villa so that, by opening the floor-to-ceiling doors that line the entire rear of the villa, the inside of the home combines seamlessly with the beauty of the gardens and becomes one.
Once you have planned the daily menu with your housekeeper, your only decisions are whether to laze in the hammock, stroll through the jasmine arbor and let the waves of perfume wash over you, or play volleyball or badminton, cooling off with a few laps in the large swimming pool. Tennis racquets are available, courts are nearby. There is snorkeling equipment; you can swim to snorkel at the close-to-shore coral reef. There are boogie boards for your use; a nearby beach offers surfing lessons. Scuba diving or deep sea fishing can be arranged. Entertainment options include many board games, video games, books, TV with DVD player and a computer internet connection gives access to Netflix and other online TV programming. If you must, keep in touch with the rest of the world via wifi or with the mobile ‘phone lent to you for the duration of your stay. ‘Phone cards are readily available or the property manager will have one delivered to the house for you.
The property manager ensures that everything works smoothly during your stay; she can arrange for special needs to be met or deal with any obstacles that arise.
The three gardeners also keep the pool immaculate and ensure that the estate grown papaya, banana, oranges, limes and other fruit will appear each morning on your breakfast table. Between meals, the butler will bring you glasses of fresh lime juice or drinks of your choice.
Food for your meals is purchased daily by the housekeeper. Estimated cost is $35-40 per person per day, not including alcohol. Supermarket costs are similar to those in the US and Canada. Receipts are carefully documented and presented to you towards the end of your stay. Payment can be made in major currencies; the manager can arrange for currency exchange.
Jamaica has excellent beer and rum. The housekeeper will be happy to add these items to your shopping list. Wine enthusiasts may prefer to bring their own supply. We recommend, though, that you extend your Jamaica experience to colonial heritage drinks such as Planter’s Punch, which research by food writer Robert Moss shows was being enjoyed in Jamaica as early as 1878. What could be more appropriate than to sip a glass or two as you sit on the terrace overlooking the glorious view, trying to count the humming birds, with the clink of glasses and silverware in the background as the staff set the table for dinner?
The ultimate tranquility of Norse Hill Estate awaits you.
The owners have lived in Miami for many years, bringing up their children there while running a successful business that provided essential medical equipment to health institutions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
One spouse was born and brought up in Jamaica, in the Port Antonio area. Many family members still live there. Through frequent visits over the years, the family began to find ways to contribute to supporting community development efforts in Port Antonio and the surrounding parish. Learning by chance that this property was on the market, it took only one visit for them to realize that this was not only the perfect holiday residence for their own family, but also a place where many could come to find peace and renewal in the incomparable beauty and amenities of the estate, and to enjoy the many attractions that the area has to offer.
“The property itself is arguably the best endowed in Port Antonio.” wrote Oliver Hill, a travel writer, in 2010. A luxury estate with all the features of Norse Hill, with its lush acreage of carefully maintained tropical gardens, interspersed with exploration trails, could be a destination in itself. There is certainly no equal to it in the area and there are probably few estates in the Caribbean with such a large acreage combined with a villa of such unique features. Large villas along the coast are usually cheek by jowl with other large villas. Not so with this property. You may need to enlist the help of the gardeners to find the children as they explore the gardens! The security of the property, as well as the very low crime rate in the parish, means that you can let them roam in safety. The estate is actually within the prestigious San San Nature Reserve & Bird Sanctuary. The Norwegian shipping magnate who built the villa in the early 1960’s was a botanist. He had both local and exotic flora planted in a harmonious array to provide peaceful seclusion for his family and an environment favored by a huge number of birds and butterflies. The estate grown papaya, banana, oranges, limes and other fruit will appear each morning on your breakfast table. Between meals, the butler will bring you glasses of fresh lime juice or drinks of your choice.
The location above Port Antonio guarantees breezes for better air circulation and wonderful views, in addition to the privacy. Neighboring estates are barely visible. There is a large pool but when the beach beckons, a taxi will whisk you there in five minutes. A call on the mobile will summon the driver to return you to the villa where the chef will have your lunch ready, and the butler will be waiting to serve it.
Your only decisions will be menu planning, and deciding which of the many activities to choose each day.
