Great home; Great vacation; VERY Relaxing
We are two adult couples (70s & 50s) and were looking for a comfortable, accessible, oceanfront home for a relaxing Bahamas vacation. You can't get any more comfortable, accessible, or oceanfront than this! Jeff (the owner) was extremely responsive both with our initial questions, through the reservation, and later when we had questions about the house and area just prior to our vacation. As a fellow-HomeAway owner, my hat is off to how well he handled and helped with our vacation plans.
Although you could walk to town (2 miles from the house), you will want to rent a golf cart for the week ($300 per week during the Feb/Mar. timeframe). Jeff had recommended that to us and we were immediately glad that he did. Although we had no issue, he suggested reserving in advance.
As for dining, we ate at Jake's Place in town which is both reasonable and casual. Another memorable lunch was at FireFly; the staff was VERY friendly. Beyond that, the best dinner we had was actually carry-out no more than a 2 minute walk from the house at Mackey's Take-Out; go figure! Don't let the "working out of the side of their house" look scare you away. It was actually the best coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, and lobster fritter I've ever had! As for dining-in, I strongly recommend you buy your groceries either in Marsh Harbor before you arrive, or in the grocery located just north of the main dock on Elbow Cay (Harbor View Grocery); the prices where much cheaper than the grocery located just around the corner from the house (a nice store, but with high convenience prices).
Back to the house...it was very well equipped. I can honestly say that we did not want for anything other than the things we would expect to bring on any vacation. The kitchen was well stocked, the linens and towels were furnished and clean, the beds were comfortable, there was plenty of deck furniture, plenty of space to spread out, and even my addiction to research on the internet was served through a wifi connection. We even had plenty of flashlights and candles during a brief power-outage. The only thing I can think to suggest is to bring water shoes with good soles since the beach in front of the house is a combination of coral in spots and beautiful pink sand.
If you are looking for a relaxing, safe and comfortable Bahamas vacation, Elbow Cay, and St. Somewhere (the name of the house) will exceed your expectations.
