Out Islands classic
San Salvador is for my wife and I, the fourth trip we make in the Bahamas "Out Islands", or Family Islands, if you prefer. Once again, the charm operated totally. Why ? Well it has to suit your needs. First off, the islands itself, is just that: a small island, 1000 souls more or less, everyone pretty much knowing everyone else, warm and friendly faces everywhere. No shopping malls, no nitelife per se, not much to do except enjoy the pristine and natural beauty of the place. It's starts directly at the back of the house. Gorgeous beach ! Amazing snorkeling if you walk a little towards the left. After that it's just a matter of exploring, we went all the way around the island, stopped at the lighthouse, explored the beautiful pigeon creek (saw turtles and baby sharks !) Also went around the south end, to French and Snowy bay. Walked on the cliffs there. Beautiful ! We did spend a day and a night at the club Med. We were able to enjoy a really nice diner, with a good bottle of wine (which is quite rare on the island, so might want to pack your own). The day cost us 50$ each. Access to all the equipment, free drinks, beach and you can go out snorkeling with the Club Med boat. Diner is 30$ per person. Real cheap for a great buffet and once again open bar.
Supplies are fairly easy to get in Cockburn Town, if you time it with the boat which usually comes in once a week. After that, you can manage to cook pretty much everything. BBQ at the house worked all week. The kitchen in the house lacks a bit of cooking space, but makes up incredibly with the way it is equipped. Wether it is the kitchen or anything else, it lacked nothing ! Beach chairs, snorkeling gear, quality fishing rods, harpoon , even ! Beds were comfy, plenty of AC, Neat cable TV, even WIFI (which has a personality, and tends to work on and off)
The car we rented with the owners worked well enough and is a necessary commodity to get around the isle.
Truly great vacation experience. If you're tired of the resorts, if you're looking for the away from it all, and for the romantic, postal card decor ... This is it. Try it ! My wife and I did, and we haven't gotten back to those fancy crowded hotels ever since !
