Why Richard Fenner chose Wilmington

My wife gre up in the Little Italy section of Wilmington DE Her sister lives two doors away from Bancroft Cottage and has been urging her to buy the house each time it came on the market in the last forty years. The day finally came when were in a position to grant her wish so we purchased it (at the peak of the market) as a second home/vacation rental property. We spend a couple weeks a year at Bancroft Cottage and love having our own place to entertain family.

Family of the Groom Wedding Stay

We loved the house, very clean, well furnished, lots of space, beautiful hardwood floors, & especially the bonus of the screened in porch for nice weather. The house easily fit our large group. It was the perfect mix of a 40's style home but remodeled kitchen and bathrooms. We liked the keyless entry, for different people coming and going, then we did not have to worry about keys. The house overlooks Bancroft Parkway which looks like a park, with people walking, jogging and playing. It is an easy walk to bakery and eateries. Kitchen was well furnished. The owners were very easy to work with and helpful. We will definitely stay here again.
Owner's Response: Thank you for such a nice review. We are very pleased you found your stay pleasant and comfortable. We do take pride in making sure Bancroft Cottage is the way we would like a home away from home. Richard & Kathleen

Great Home Away from Home

Submitted: March 26, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
We very much enjoyed staying at Bancroft Cottage. We are relocating to the Wilmington area so have made a few trips in the last year, staying at various hotels and inns in the area. Never again! (that is, if this home is available!) It was the perfect spot to stay with our 2 children (kitchen! laundry!). The listing description was entirely accurate. The house is lovely: very well-appointed and maintained and clean. the location is very convenient for both the business traveler and sightseer (minutes to the major attractions in the immediate area -- including Winterthur, Hagley Museum, Delaware Museum of Natural Science, Delaware Art Museum, Nemours Mansion/Gardens, Brandywine Creek State Park; within 30 to Longwood Gardens, Brandywine River Museum, Brandywine Battlefield, etc., etc.). Very helpful owners. Totally smooth transaction. We have already recommended this property to friends as a possible place for their friends and family to stay when guest rooms are full, and will continue to do so.

I am so very happy to hear that the basement heating issue is being solved. It is an otherwise lovely property and since this issue is being solved we can look forward to another stay perhaps next Feb. Thank you for taking my observations seriously and I look forward to another lovely week end in Wilmington at Barcroft. It is truely a lovely home away from home.
Owner's Response: I also added an overhead heating unit in the basement bathroom.

This property would be perfect except that the bedroom in basement is NOT heated at all. The space was so cold I wished I had a thermometer to document how very cold it was. If you are traveling with family or do not object to sharing beds, this property will sleep 6 without using the basement area if you pull the air bed out of the "secret" room which is also an unheated space. I would recommend this property for spring, summer or early fall but having slept in the basement room it is much too cold and should not be considered in winter when looking at available space. Also a ceiling tile over a bed was missing in the basement room which resulted in debris falling on to the face of the person using that bed each time someone walked on the floor above. Had we been informed that the basement space was unheated I would have made a different choice. Other than the heat issue/missing tile the house is lovely, convenient and well stocked with almost any kitchen utensils one needs. In spite of the very cold basement we enjoyed our stay and would return in warmer weather or with assurances that the basement space had been heated. A small baseboard heater would solve the problem. The pictures of the house are accurate, even the unheated basement is very attractive and with the addition of a mirror (plus heat) would be a very livable space. It was not damp or moldy just very, very cold. I'm from near by Maryland so I'm not a wilting southern belle unused to northern climes. All this being said if you don't mind a polar environment this is a very nice rental but should NOT be listed for winter or for more than 4 people unless you wish to share beds.
Owner's Response: I can't say Pat is wrong. We have had so many requests for parties greater than five I decided to put two twin beds in the finished basement. Because the furnace is in the basement I thought with the door to the furnace room open it would give off enough ambient heat to keep the temp above 60 degrees. It was an extra cold week when Pat stayed there and obviously I was wrong. My wife and I have stayed at Bancroft Cottage over Christmas and used the basement to do laundry and found it to be crisp, but not unpleasant. We should have had our Property Manager check this out beforehand. We have now installed an electric heating unit between the beds and getting a bid on baseboard heat. Pat and her friends were our first guests to use the basement. Unfortunately her experience alerted us to the problem. We should have given consideration to this possibilty ahead of times. The missing ceiling tile has been replaced as well. Pat, again I apologize.

This is what are next guest had to say "Just wanted you to know we had a wonderful stay at your home. It was quite comfortable, loved all the upgrades! Thank you for providing the heater in the basement. It worked well. We took care of the home as if it was ours, everything was left just as we found it (it was as if we were never there). We will definitely rent in the future and also recommend the home to our friends/family."

Would highly recommend this house. We rented it for our wedding for my family to stay in. It was absolutely amazing. Plenty of space and updated- probably nicer than your own house! Owner was great to work with as well.

Perfect Place for our family

Our daughter decided to get married out of town near her fiances's family. She wanted to get ready in a relaxed place and not a hotel room. This was perfect for our needs, it gave us an opportunity to have the bridesmaids come over to prepare for this wonderful event. It was all and more than we expected!

Perfect for Our Stay

5 of 5
Submitted: June 22, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
We were in the Brandywine/Delaware Valley region with our son and a friend to tour some of the gardens and other historic sites. Bancroft Cottage made a perfect base for our touring which included one day in New York City via train.

On our day of arrival as we turned onto the street, there was an audible sigh of satisfaction from all of us. The cottage is in a pretty neighborhood that's made for walking. There are also several restaurants just an easy walk away.

The property was in immaculate shape and we were able to spread out without falling over each other. We had breakfast in the cottage most days - either in the kitchen or out on the sun porch. The sun porch also served as an afternoon gathering place, reading spot or just a great place for conversation.

Richard made himself very available for the few questions we had and also gave us a handy list of restaurants. We tried several and were always pleased. There's so much to see and do in the area that it's not hard to make a week's trip out of it. We'd love to come again.

Perfect spot to feel right at home.

We stayed at Bancroft Cottage for 5 days in April 2012 while celebrating our daughter's wedding. We traveled from NC and were so pleased to find this home to rent. A hotel stay could never have given us the opportunity to spend quality time with our daughter in a space as lovely as if we were in our own home. Richard and Patti Fenner were so helpful as we tied down the details for our stay. They provided us with detailed instructions on every aspect of what to expect while renting their property. We opened the door to a beautifully furnished and decorated, immaculate home. We stayed there with our three, young adult children. We all felt at home and never crowded. This home has 3 full baths all with rain shower heads and high quality, color coordinated towels. The three bedrooms all had extremely comfortable beds with linens similar to those you would find in an executive level hotel. The kitchen is beautiful with expensive cabinetry, marble countertops and top of the line appliances. All the dishes, glassware, serving pieces, utensil and cookware item or countertop appliance you could imagine needing, was available. The screened in side porch was an added bonus and provided a wonderful spot to relax. Washer and dryer were available for use as well. We actually had our daughter's bridesmaids over the morning of the wedding to get their hair done and to get dressed. The basement was converted into a "Dayspa" easily because it was a beautiful spot, fully tiled with a full bath. The hairdresser was amazed.
The actual location of the property is perfect because it is so close to shopping and restaurants. It is nestled in a neighborhood of beautiful homes and the area it is in makes for a lovely walk or jog.
I would highly recommend this property for anyone desiring a well-appointed, safe, beautifully maintained spot to rent for your next stay in the Wilmington DE area.

Thank you for your wonderful comments. I am going to ask HomeAway to change "Patti" to "Kathy". Kathy is my wife and Patti is my girlfriend and I don't want them finding out about each other .... ha ha ha

A Perfect Choice!

My family stayed in this home, mid May 2010, while we looked for our own rental due to relocation to Wilmington. I would recommend this property to family and friends. The house is beautiful. Top of the line kitchen, beautiful decorations throughout. Nice leather executive feel living room. Wireless internet. Driveway parking. It truly felt like a home away from home. Great neighborhood for walks. Close to everything. My husband, 2 year old daughter, and myself thoroughly enjoyed the house. It felt safe and comfortable. Our rental home we found is small and will not be able to accommodate all of my family. I would suggest that my mother and grandmother stay here. There is a very nice twin bed BR on the main floor with a full bath just steps away, which has a walk in shower. Perfect for my elderly grandmother. The homeowners and family members that assist with the rental are very pleasant to deal with. Efficient, friendly, and accommodating to our needs. Thank you for such a great experience.
