It has always been a dream of mine to purchase and renovate a home. Paul and I are Connecticut Yankees who adore the Maine coast. In 2005, we found this small cottage in West Bath. While Paul immediately zeroed in on all the work that needed to be done – and it was extensive, I simply looked dreamily at the water view. Location, location, location!

Built in 1940 on posts, the 'camp' was beginning to sink into the ground and was lop-sided. The cottage had to be raised hydraulically and placed on what looked like Lincoln logs while a cement basement was built below to support the structure. The original home was literally gutted – only one exterior wall was left standing while we went to work to rebuild the cottage. It was important for me to maintain the original look and feel of the cottage so that it remained integrated into the surroundings. After much blood, sweat and tears… (and did I mention money?...way over budget!), we completed the bulk of the renovations.

Each year we select additional projects that we hope to complete to further enhance the charm of this little cottage. Almost every item in the cottage has “a story” and a connection to our experience in Maine. It is truly a joy to share our “little slice of heaven” with folks from all over the world.

Dawn Sarro purchased this cottage in 2005

West Bath is located on the Maine coast between Brunswick and Bath, approximately 35 miles north of Portland on Route 1. With the New Meadows River on one side and Casco Bay on the other, West Bath enjoys its coastal character. It is a place of delightful surprises, such as the small, private coves that curl into its salt marshes and sloping fields. Some of the region's loveliest homes rest there at the crests of those fields, overlooking the bay on their doorstep.

Easy drive to Portland, Rockland, Freeport, and Boothbay.

This property is perfect for couples looking for the laid back feel of Maine living. Although the cottage maintains its original Maine-charm, the interior has been totally renovated and offers many updates and amenities. Within a 10 minute drive you will be able to enjoy shopping in Bath and tasting the freshest seafood Maine has to offer.

Bath is known as “Maine’s Cool Little City” - big enough to be a commercial and cultural hub and compact enough to be intimate and walkable, Bath is vibrant, friendly, and a Maine visitor’s paradise. The compact downtown district of the “City of Ships” has lovingly preserved 19th century architecture lining pedestrian-friendly Front and Centre Streets…a hold over from the days of the Tall Ships, and the perfect place for an afternoon of browsing downtown’s many shops, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

Just a couple of miles downriver is the Maine Maritime Museum, ranked one of the “Ten Best” maritime museums in the world.

From its vantage point along the Kennebec River at the head of the Phippsburg and Georgetown peninsulas, Bath is also a great central location for enjoying a day at the beach, hiking trails, fishing or deep-water sailing.

Easy drive to Portland, Rockland, Freeport, and Boothbay.

In searching for a summer rental, I always look for a clean, bright, and cheery atmosphere. I love white walls with splashes of color throughout the home. When I came across Dawn and Paul’s beautifully-decorated, newly-refinished home, it caught my interest. I immediately called Dawn, and I knew that I had found the perfect summer rental vacation home for my husband and me. We arrived late at night with great anticipation. We opened the front door, and fell in love. From the cathedral ceiling, creative color palate of decorations, windows that give a breath taking view, new granite counter tops, spacious dining room table, to the updated appliances, and comfy couch a homey, yet stylish, atmosphere embraces you from the moment you walk through the door.

I would not hesitate to recommend this rental to anyone. You will not be disappointed. Dawn and Paul are delightful people to work with, and I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with your stay in this lovely home.

Comment Posted from Cottage Guest Book: "What a spectacular week! The late summer weather was perfect. Mom and I ventured out to the stunning Maine Coastal gardens, picnicked beach side at Reid State Park and Popham Beach, and shopped a bit in Bath and Boothbay. Mostly, we enjoyed hanging out at your lovely cottage while reading, chatting and watching the river dance. I am officially relaxed, recharged, and ready to start the new school year!"

A Return Visit Enjoyed!

Comment Posted from Cottage Guest Book: Our last trip to Maine was in September 1998, our daughter was just 13 months old and learning to walk. This trip, she is learning to drive and turns 16 on August 4th. How time flies! We had a lovely time in this little cottage. We caught a lovely clam festival in Yarmouth, day trips to Portland, Boothbay, Monehegan Island, Bristol, Freeport, Bath, the Pemaquid Lighthouse and Reid State Park (gorgeous). We ate lobsters and lobster rolls everywhere, but agree that the ones we got at Gilmore's and cooked ourselves were the best. The cottage had all the amenities you could want and Dawn provides a wonderful home manual and "basket" of places to see. They want you to love the house and all Maine has to offer. Make sure you stop and see the little cemetery on your way in or out - a lesson in history, many headstones date from the late 1700's and early 1800's - many were sea captains lost at sea. Loved this trip! Hope we don't wait another 15 years to come back.

A Return Visit after a 27 Year Absence

Comment Posted from Cottage Guestbook: "First and foremost, let us say that we certainly agree with everyone's fine comments concerning your cottage. You have done a magnificent job for which you should be proud. After an absence of some 27 years, we were able once again to enjoy the offerings of the New Meadows River, borrowed a boat and float to be able to venture out to Small Point & have lunch at Cundy's, picnic in the Basin, and revisit many long seen friends along with a day trip to Boston's Fenway Park to enjoy a Paul McCartney concert! It doesn't get much better! Well, we are full of new memories and "lobstah" so it is time to return to Florida. Thanks.
