Nightmare on Captain Young's Way
Nightmare on Captain Young's Way
Our experience was a nightmare.
We booked this house in large part because of its proximity to the beach, which we anticipated accessing daily, rain or shine, to walk by foot with our children in a stroller. However, the access road to the closest beach was closed. From the standpoint of integrity and proactive communication, we felt we should have been notified and offered a solution before we arrived. The owner’s response, quoted here, was defensive and nasty: “If we had told you would you have cancelled? Read your lease agreement, you would have lost not only your payment but also your vacation week. My guess that the reason you never went to the beach is that it rained almost every day.”
The house was far from spotless. We found dirt, grime and cobwebs in disorganized kitchen drawers , bathrooms and floors. A dresser smelled strongly of urine. Lamps were broken. The guest bath, linen closet and everything in it smelled of mothballs. The owner’s response? “I take issue with the fact that you found the house dirty. I check everything before renters come in. No one, not one incoming person has EVER referred to the house as dirty. Did you read the reviews?”
There is no coffee, so bring your own. While you’re stocking up, don’t forget paper towels, trash bags and toilet paper, as you’ll be replenishing those too if you use more than a roll/bag or two of each. Per the owner: “In no way does our lease agreement suggest that we provide any items. This is not a hotel.” I also recommend spray for the cockroach (one) and silverfish (multiple) we found throughout the house. And while you’re at it, bring along sharp knives, cleaning solution for the sticky dining room chairs, and your own furniture if you plan to relax comfortably.
If you’re handy, you could take on such projects as fixing the dripping kitchen faucet and leaky upstairs toilet, or mulching/mowing, so that your vacation isn’t interrupted multiple times throughout the week by the lawn crew.
But above all else, I implore you: do not scratch the floors. They were recently redone, and the smallest scratch will cost you. We had $30 withheld from our security deposit for a scratch we’re sure there’s no way we could have made, along with a whopping $50 for a patch for the screen door due to a small hole we created when moving out (and immediately reported).
We’ve rented homes across the Cape, US and world, and have never had any issues like the ones we experienced here.
Owner's Response: As any prospective renter can see, by the 26 five star reviews we have on this property, we make every effort to make our guests feel at home in an immaculate, home with every convenience we can supply. We have a professional cleaning crew each week that cleans from stem to stern and I check it over before any guests check in to make sure that it is in a condition that I would want to stay in. We also provide linens which I personally launder each week so I know that they are clean or replace them if necessary. We also provide starter packs of coffee, tea, sugar, flour, salt pepper, spices oils, paper products etc. Each bathroom has a fresh roll on the spindle and two additional rolls in the vanity. Detergents for the dishwasher, sink and laundry are provided. All appliances are in excellent working condition. I personally check everything. If a guest tells us about a problem they have encountered, we make every effort to repair or replace, most often that day. We understand that you are there for one or two weeks and we want it to be right.
We were notified by the Town of Brewster that they were closing half of the beach for repair from winter storm damage 4 days before these guests arrived. The entire beach is not closed and both beaches on either side of it are open and well within walking distance. We offer guests beach stickers at our expense and provide the paperwork required and instructions to guests upon check in. Unfortunately, we cannot control the town's schedule or the weather. Our rates are thousands of dollars lower in June than in the high season because we may have mulch being put down and the weather can be iffy in some years. The lawns have to get mown and they can't all get done on Saturday between 10 and 4. We do ask that they mow mid day when most people are out and that is once a week.
In the past five years we have had to with hold money from security deposits 3 times, including this time for damage above and beyond normal wear and tear and people do get upset about it. It was also unfortunate that it rained 6 of 7 days of their vacation. We make every effort to resolve issues as they arise. We were not made aware of any of these issues until I notified them that we were withholding $80 for screen replacement and floor damage. If we had been we would have worked to rectify any issues upon notification as we have done in the past.
I stand by my 26 five star reviews.
