Elements Retreat is a majestic compound located on a five acre ridge above historic Austin Creek.

The grounds have been landscape with indigenous grasses and ferns, highlighting the phenomenal native redwood trees. Pathways wind throughout, offering innumerable walks among ever-changing scenery, including a serene pond and enchanting waterfall to delight and awaken the senses. When you hike from the main compound, pathways become forest trails beckoning further into remote adjoining terrains still on the property Extended walks offer seasonal streams and waterfalls, in addition to Austin Creek itself, with its numerous swimming holes and opportunities for creek wading. The entire retreat is professionally lit to a stunning degree, complimenting its allure day and night

Entertaining large groups is effortless and everyone can have their own privacy, while gathering together in the large entertaining areas.

The Main House: The main house is a contemporary craftsman style structure with a great room, master bedroom and two bathrooms. One of which is exceptionally large with multiple shower heads and a Zen inspired private garden. The fully appointed kitchen is centered around a granite island and can accommodate multiple chefs. Appliances include a professional six burner Wolf range/oven, micro wave drawer, Stainless refrigerator/freezer, and garbage compactor. The Great Room does have the latest in video, audio and Internet capabilities if that need strikes. The lodge is replete with fine attention to every detail, from the refectory style dining table, the deep leather sofa, to custom designed candle chandelier, which radiates throughout the main living area.

The West Terrace and Buddha Garden: The West Terrace and Buddha Garden off the main house is an example of what makes this estate so unique. The outdoor kitchen and gardens were crafted from river stone years ago when the property was a summer campsite. The outdoor kitchen has been restored and updated and includes a state of the art gas BBQ, sink, lighting and herb garden. The original river stone fire pit is now, the focal point of a modern and sophisticated outside entertainment area. The dinning table was custom made from the center cut of a local redwood tree and seats fourteen plus people. It’s the perfect setting for a large family gathering or a special event.

The guest house: The guest house has its own terrace and seating area. Its windows have beautiful garden views too, but with different vistas, giving this two-bedroom space a unique atmosphere and privacy. It has king and queen sleeping accommodations. A spacious multi shower head bathroom offers a mini spa experience off a secluded and private patio.

About Michael Hastings

I have been living in Northern California for many years. Although I always consider San Francisco 'home', I have had a vineyard in Napa (Blackbird) and now Elements in Sonoma County.

I was born in Miami Beach but raised on the West Coast. I attended UCSB, and was an avid sailor for many years. I now have started to really enjoy my retirement years spending time at Elements.

Michael Hastings purchased this estate in 2007
Why Michael Hastings chose Cazadero

The western part of Sonoma Valley has a much milder climate, its why its ideal for the Pinot Grapes. The small towns of Sebastopol, Guerneville, and Monte and reminiscent of an easier time. I choose the area because it reminded me of an early version of Napa Valley. This area has a blend of fine wines and great food, along with a unique environment with the Redwoods and Coast.

What makes this estate unique

I like living in the country, and when I first visited the property, all my senses seemed to come alive. There is a tranquility and peacefulness that seems unique. And then there is the view, over the canyon, and above the Redwoods. All of that, and abundant sunlight just made me realize it was my home.

really outstanding

One word: perfection! I'm a highly aesthetic person and your place is really really outstanding. I'm the kind of person that usually goes looking around in an area looking at other properties comparing for next time in search of something better. Your place is 100 cuts above, THANK YOU for sharing it with us. It is like I've imagined this kind of property in my dreams, the central house with little private cottages around. Just a gorgeous setting and beautiful, rustic, yet modern decor - so peaceful and elegant and comfortable. The kitchen is perfectly equipped for serious cooks ... just awesome! Are you a tall man? We think so as the kitchen seems built for tall people - like where the pans are hung.
Thanks again for a perfect setting for my birthday .... you are so blessed to have made your dream a reality ... so nice when means and style go hand in hand! I'd love to hear more about how you brought this place into being if and when you are so inclined. You have truly honored nature here.

Unwind with the Elements

The Elements did not disappoint. Tucked away from the busy life of the city and burbs, the Elements was the ultimate getaway to rest, relax, and rejuvenate. The place lived up to the images. We had a group of eight, and the property was more then big enough to accommodate our size. We loved the multiple lounge areas spread across the property; it's great with a big group, as it allows individuals to take breaks from the group for alone time if needed. We'll definitely be back!!

Fabulous Retreat

I rented this property for my husband's 50th birthday. This place exceeded all of my expectations. First of all, the owner could not have been more accommodating. Before I arrived at the property, the owner provided me with great recommendations for my trip. Second of all, the property and surroundings were stunning - a beautiful, private retreat in the middle of giant redwood trees. This property has it all - you never have to leave..... Beautiful outdoor patio, commercial grade grill and indoor kitchen, awesome firepit, jacuzzi (in the middle of the beautiful redwoods), etc. Also, the property was very well kept and clean. I would highly recommend Elements. This place is truly something special and I will be going back again. Thank You Michael. Sincerely, Boop!!

Owner's Response: It really is a pleasure to help a guest with the details that are so important in a vacation. I always want Elements to be comfortable and relaxing for my guests. But there are endless ways to explore the Sonoma countryside and I love sharing my ideas with guests. I cant wait for Boop to return.

Truly a place to find PEACE

We just returned from a week at the Elements. The photos do not due it justice--it is amazing, tranquil, beautiful, and peaceful place. My husband and I took our daughter, son-in-law and 8 month old grandson. Our family has gone thru a lot over the past few years and this was the vacation we so deperately needed. The Elements was extrenely well maintained and we had everything we needed to cook some amazing meals. The drive may seem long but it is so worth it, and the views are breathtaking around there--I suggest a drive up Hwy 1. We spent the days exploring the vineyards, site-seeing, and came back in the evenings to a hot tub, fire, and a great glass of wine. The owner, Michael, made our stay incredible. He was always helpful and offered great suggestions for restaurants. You must eat at River's End--where the Russian River meets the Pacific- the view is incredible at Sunset--we ate there twice and the food was amazing. Also check out Raymond's Bakery--the cinnamon rolls are incredible. I will definitely recommend the Elements to our family and friends and I am looking forward to planning another trip there.

Owner's Response: I am always very happy to hear that my guests enjoyed their stay at Elements. As a host its gratifying to hear how much they enjoyed their stay and how my recommendations added pleasure to their stay in the Redwoods. This part of Sonoma County has so much to offer besides the wineries and great food. John and Wendy did drive up the coast towards Fort Ross, which I think is as scenic as Big Sur. And they certainly enjoyed great cuisine by eating at River's End. Its one of my perennial favorites, both for the food and terrific sunsets.

perfect family retreat

My family celebrated my mother and father in laws 75th birthday. It was an outstanding venue for family to come together and enjoy the "elements". The grounds and home was in perfect condition and well appointed. We were able to visit wineries in Sonoma, Napa and Dry Creek. I wish we would have dined more at home...3 nights were not enough! My husband and I plan on returning by ourselves for a special retreat! Michael is a gem and can make anything happen! Thanks for sharing this wonderful home.
Owner's Response: I love it when guests enjoy Elements like I do. It is a home, but its orientation is towards nature and comfort. It is a retreat, and in the most amazing location. The real praise is when guests return every year for a special retreat or occasion. I know then how my efforts have succeeded. I am delighted that Deborah and her guests had such a good time.

Elements

"Elements was everything we hoped it would be! The peace and tranquility overwhelms you the moment you drive up the driveway. We felt like we were at our own private resort in the redwood forest. The soaking tub under the stars was the best. The house was very clean with the best sheets and towels. I'm not sure if it was the cool crisp air or the comfortable beds, we all slept very well.
Michael was our own personal tour guide with his recommendations on restaurants, wineries and touring the coast! We're already talking about a return trip.
Owner's Response: The best compliment I can get, is when a guest enjoys Elements as much as I do. I love to share my knowledge and experiences, I know what its like vacationing, with all the endless possibilities. Sometimes just a little extra hint of someplace special can add a lot to a vacation.

Ohhh, that dang toilet seat...

2 of 5
Submitted: September 19, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
The Elements is absolutely amazing. We loved our stay and were talking about booking it twice next year. Unfortunately, our experience was soured afterwards by the handling of our security deposit. Because despite the beautiful photos that we took, our lingering memory is of a toilet seat.

As background, Michael has a list of rules that we were following, and as part of this we left him a voicemail when we checked out to report two broken items: the guesthouse toilet seat and the kitchen soap dispenser spout. We considered both to be broken through normal use, but Michael surprised us by emailing receipts - $118 for the toilet seat and $23 for the soap dispenser spout. We explained that neither item was in perfect condition – we’re not even sure how or why the spout fell off – but he still held us responsible, explaining that he and his housekeeper didn’t notice any issues before we arrived. After some back and forth, Michael offered to absorb half the cost of the toilet seat as a compromise, deducting $81 from our security deposit, and said he felt that was fair. To us it just felt petty, especially given the amount we had paid for our 8-night stay.

And now that we know this is how Michael handles what we’d consider to be wear-and-tear, none of us want to go back. The Elements has furniture and fixtures that are exquisite, but things aren’t brand new. We wouldn’t want to risk taking responsibility for anything more expensive than a toilet seat.
Owner's Response: I'm very meticulous about the condition of my home, always checking everything is in good working order before the arrival of my guests. Unfortunately, I have to recover the costs for any breakage caused by guests. I always present an accurate accounting to replace any items that were damaged, and refund the balance of the security deposit within a week. When I learned about Maureen's dissatisfaction, I offered to compromise and sent an additional refund as agreed upon to resolve things to both our satisfaction. It's too bad that this small incident seems to have ruined her overall vacation. I always want my guests to be happy and enjoy their stay. I wish Maureen well and that she can look back on the more positives of her last stay at Elements.

Our family enjoyed a week here last year so much we decided to return this year. The property is very well maintained and everything is in good working order. A small glitch with an appliance was followed by an email/text to Michael who immediately corrected the problem. Other than that he was an invisible host. The weather is great - easy to see why you Californian's pay so many taxes. We enjoyed our wine tour with driver again this year. Our high point had to be our day long float of the Russian River from Healdsburg. Our 3 year old granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed the day and, for that matter, the whole week. The hot soaking tub is a welcome spot at the end or beginning of the day. No "neighbors" are visible from the house which adds to the peaceful serenity of Elements. We just felt comfortable there.

Owner's Response: The highest praise Elements can get is when guests return every year. In some cases its a family reunion, and in others a yearly retreat for old friends. But the goal is always the same, guests should feel indulged and comfortable.

Family vacation at "The Elements"

Family vacation at "The Elements"

We had several generations together for a family vacation at this lovely serene place. The lay out of several houses together gave us all plenty of privacy, but there was also plenty of places where we could easily be together. Having it fenced in made vacationing with our dag a real pleasure. We would happily go back to this wonderful spot.
Owner's Response: I am happy that Elements is so dog-friendly. The added security of the fencing and gate really gives our guests a peace of mind about their pet. Its so easy for dogs to go chasing after something, and then of course they could get lost. Its just another way that Elements tries to make everyone comfortable.

Reunion in the Redwoods

5 of 5
Submitted: July 10, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
Often the Internet depiction of a property doesn't square with reality. The Elements exceeded expectations in every way. Michael, the owner, has created an eight plus acre mini-resort, replete with oversized bathrooms with multiple shower heads, four ultra-comfortable king & queen beds, large screen TVs, hot tub, meditation garden, yoga studio, and a massive kitchen with commercial grade appliances. All of this in a setting among the redwoods with abundant places to relax in the sun, or step into a nearby redwood stand to cool down. We were celebrating a mini-family reunion--8 adults--and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The property's location is also excellent, about 15 minutes to Guerneville and the same to Jenner and the coast. The Elements is a little slice nature, with all the comforts of home. We will definitely be back.
Owner's Response: When I get this kind of review I am of course very flattered. But it also means that I am achieving my goal. I want Elements to offer what is best about the redwoods and compliment that with the amenities of sophisticated comfort.
