EVEN BETTER THAN IT LOOKS ... Albeit with a Couple Minor Quibbles
We're writing this as we sit on the property's lanai, enjoying a trade wind day near the end of our two week stay.
The place has been terrific, and the previous reviews have captured it well. Informed by these reviews, we've had few surprises.
WHAT DID NOT COME ACROSS IN THE OTHER REVIEWS: The lanai is much larger and more pleasant than we had been led to expect. It is not just a balcony on the southwest side of the guest house but a huge covered area at its western corner. And the view of the ocean is not just through a narrow slot alongside the main house. Instead, it is an expansive, palm-graced vista whose sweep looks out across the neighbors' property ... and even through the glass of the main house.
OTHER SMALL SURPRISE: Usually, professionally-shot property photos make places look bigger and better than they truly are. In this case, it's the other way 'round. This is a high-end guest house that is even nicer than it appears on the Internet. Furniture and bed are first-rate and super comfy. There are TWO luxury bathrooms. And the kitchen is one of the nicest we have encountered anywhere.
Outside, one has full run of a beautiful property. The main house backyard is glorious. Palms and oceanfront vista across the tide pools, up the coast, and all the way out to Maui. Sunsets witnessed from beach or seawall are unforgettable. And, sitting on the lounge chairs at midnight, watching palms dance against the stars? Spiritual. One of the nicest things about Puako is the lack of street lights. For city dwellers who have for too long been denied the healing presence of genuine NIGHT, it is a revelation.
The quibbles? Well, as previous reviewers have alluded, the neighboring property does look like a Hawaiian version of Deliverance. The main shack is surrounded by assorted cars, vehicles in for repairs, and random junk. There are four or five dogs, and they do bark. That said, the folks are nice, they've been here since way before the rest of us mainlanders, and they don't allow the dogs to bark for long. (The only exception was a day in which a little yappy dog was tied up and left ... prompting it to yip for hours on end.). And, if the wind is wrong, the neighbors' BBQ smoke can become an irritant.
Beyond that, it was difficult to find the bikes and paddleboards featured on the website (due to a balky key). We never did find the hammock that was pictured. And, many of the diving masks were kaput.
In all, though, a super spot!
