Enjoying The Port City!

Absolutely thrilled with our time at Magnolia House! We flew into Wilmington during Hurricane Sandy which made all of us (7 adults & 1 baby) a little anxious. But we arrived safe and sound and Katie, the property manager, was there to greet us as promised.
We were in Wilmington to host a baby shower for my first grandchild. The Magnolia House was PERFECT! We all felt right at home and found ourselves spending most of our time gathering in the kitchen either preparing the food for the shower or just hanging around the table enjoying our visit. There were approximately 50-60 guests at the shower and there was plenty of room for everyone to move around and mingle comfortably. We did all of the food ourselves and the large kitchen made it easy for 4 or more to be working together.
I will definitely consider another stay at Magnolia House. It's got plenty of room for a large group and far more comfortable than staying in a hotel! Not to mention more economical. As I said there were 7 adults & 1 baby in our group. We all had more than enough privacy when we needed it as well as the space to gather together when we wanted to share a meal or just hangout.
Natalie (the owner) was great about answering emails & phone calls and never made me feel like I was a bother. And Katie (the property manager) was also there when we needed her.
Thank you to both of you for helping to make our visit to The Port City so wonderful!

A real home away from home

Our extended family rented this wonderful home for Thanksgiving and to be "wedding central" for our daughter's wedding. It served us well on both counts. Although the house needs some attention physically we loved the homey character and the amazing amount of space. It was a dream to cook Thanksgiving dinner in that huge kitchen! The house just begs to be really "lived in" with lots of room for little ones to move and for us older folks to relax without getting in each other's way.
The house manager, Katie was very helpful as was the owner, Natalie. The fresh flowers and banana bread on arrival were a welcome touch.
Nearly every member of our family spoke of wanting to buy the house because it just has that kind of effect. The beds aren't the most comfortable, the plumbing is old, and the floors aren't level but not a bit of that matters because charm wins out. It was absolutely a wonderful week and we would not hesitate to return. If you are looking for a perfectly restored historical home to rent this is not for you. But if you are looking for a place to make unforgettable family memories do so without hesitation.
Thanks for a wonderful stay!! ....and Natalie, if you decide to sell let us know :)

JAG Review

We recently rented this beautiful home to attend our daughter's wedding. The property was more than we expected. It was an absolute delight. There was plenty of room, it was very clean and well kept. The kitchen was outstanding. The spacious accommodated our needs as we had five families (12 people) who either drove or flew in for the special event and the home offered plenty of areas for relaxing and visiting. It was a short drive to the beach and only 8 blocks from the Brooklyn Arts Center where the wedding was held. It was easily accessible to the main travel routes. We would not hesitate booking this property again. Thanks for the special memories!
Owner's Response: Dear Julie,
Thank you for your review! I enjoyed helping you plan for your stay, and hope your daughter's wedding was magical. I'm so glad that you enjoyed your visit. We would love to welcome you and your family back again for another celebration!
All the best,

Wilmington wedding

We stayed here with a group of friends and hosted a rehearsal dinner. The backyard has a magnificent, huge old magnolia tree. We set up round tables under the tree for dining. The setting was very welcoming and was everything I had pictured it would be. Middle of the Island was the caterer and I highly recommend them. The house was perfect for our group of ten adults and two children, there is plenty of room in the house to fit a group this size comfortably. The beds are all very comfortable. The refrigerator is big and the freezer is a separate appliance so there is plenty of room for ice etc. the cupcakes waiting for us to arrive were a sweet surprise!
Libby and Natalie are helpful and easy to work with. This is a great choice for a large group planning a trip to Wilmington.

Wonderful Historic Home

We had an adult cousin reunion is this beautiful home, which provided plenty of space for all. When we entered, it was like going back in time - reminded me of our grandparents' house which we all liked to visit, with staircase, glass doorknobs, high ceilings, etc. The house was tastefully and comfortably furnished, especially the "to-die-for" kitchen where we gathered for coffee and breakfast. The dining room with large table gave us a comfortable place to share a meal and memories. Everyone seemed comfortable with sleeping arrangements, and 3 bathrooms upstairs made it easy to share. With living room and den, we had space to gather in groups. Nice neighborhood with sidewalks encouraged walking. A tour of Wilmington gave us insight into the history of the area. We are thankful to the owner for sharing her home for an extended weekend for our reunion, the manager for making sure we had what we needed, and especially cousins living in the area who provided such gracious hospitality.

Owner's Response: Dear Ann,
Thank you for your kind review. It was a pleasure accommodating the family of our neighbors, and made it extra special for us to know that you were able to enjoy being in the same neighborhood. A cousin's weekend is such a great tradition, and one I would love to start in my own family! Come back to the Magnolia House for another visit soon.

Cousins Reunion

Seven cousins and spouses gathered at the Magnolia House for a wonderful weekend together. Two of the cousins live in the neighborhood so we could enjoy walking to the different houses to visit and share meals. The Magnolia House is spacious and perfect for visiting and relaxing. The kitchen is spacious and the dining room provided a great place to eat, relax, and share albums and memories. The property owner provided fresh flowers, cupcakes, and nice new linens.

The charm of the bathrooms with the original tile floors, the large windows, French doors, and grand entrance make this a calm retreat. The large windows provide plenty of sunlight for a cheerful place to visit, read and relax. The den is perfect for TV viewing or reading. The backyard is private and perfect for a cookout.

We have learned that the new management is making improvements (paint and plumbing) along with attention to details in the decor. Charming old homes require constant attention.

The house is located near town. We enjoyed the Trolley Tour downtown, Oakdale Cemetary, and the Bellamy Mansion. The neighborhood is charming with turn of the century homes, sidewalks, historical markers, and churches with chimes on Sunday morning. Another special place within walking distance, was Carolina Farmin (groceries and local produce) with a fantastic bakery and excellent coffee.

I would highly recommend this home for families who enjoy the charm of a historical neighborhood. The house is comfortable, spacious, and inviting. We look forward to another visit in the future!

Magnolia House Wilmington N. Carolina 8/13-8/20/12

Although the listing states "while staying at Magnolia House guests enjoy the privacy and comfort of a family home, with the amenities of a luxury hotel..." that was not the case with us. After pointing out over 25 deficiencies to the owner, documented by photographs, she has assured us it has been taken care of. So it is possible that the comment now applies, unfortunately not for us. The house is lovely but in need of maintenance and cleaning. No extra towels or linens, dripping sinks and tubs, doors that do not close in both bathrooms and bedrooms, torn furniture upholstery, wires coming out of the ground on the patio, dirty and stained wooden floors, but as you see the list goes on. We were all related so we managed to have a fun and enjoyable time together, as we were there for a family wedding. It allowed us to all be together and share the weekend together. It could be a beautiful place with a great deal of routine cleaning and maintenance, which I am sure is a challenge in a house of this period. The owner offered us a weekend in exchange for the inconvenience but we were only there for the wedding nearby and will not be in the area again for the foreseeable future. The photos are very "staged" and not a true representation of actual furnishings. The property manager who was not helpful has been replaced. I would recommend the property if it has been improved and cleaned.

Owner's Response: Dear Celeste,
Again, I am grateful for your feedback and thorough list regarding your recent stay at The Magnolia House. If you do decide to come back and see the house again (perhaps your son in NC would like to come for a weekend?), then we would welcome the opportunity to show you that each of your concerns has been attended to. The maintenance and cleaning issues you have mentioned have each been addressed and remediated, including the purchase of new furniture and new linens and new towels. Our house has been a popular vacation rental for 5 years, and we routinely replace items and attend to maintenance concerns throughout the year. We realize too, that not every vacation rental is suited to every guest. As you mentioned, The Magnolia House is an historic property, built in 1921, and as such, the style of the house may not have met your specific needs. Our plumbing is different from newer construction, for example. Nevertheless, it is our mission to make sure that each of our guests enjoys the house as much as possible, and has a relaxing, comfortable stay. Again, thank you for bringing these issues to my attention. I am confident that the recent upgrades to the house will help us to meet our goal of pleasing every guest that stays with us.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Magnolia House. Natalie and Libby were super accomodating and made sure we had everything we needed. Tons of space for a large group. We had 10 adults and 2 small children staying in the house, plus an additional 12 guests next door who would come over for dinner and there was plenty of room for everyone. Great old home with lots of charm!

Although this is an older home it was charming and very comfortable. It was also very well equipped and I was very pleased to see the baby stroller and high chair as I had my 18 month old grandson with us. The large rooms and kitchen made it the perfect place to host our daughter’s wedding reception.
Natalie, the owner was always accessible to us for any questions we had and Libby, the house manager went out of her way to make us feel at home.
I would recommend this home to anyone staying in the Wilmington area.

What a great old house! We had ten adults and three small children for a family wedding in Wilmington. First of all, the owner and the manager were so helpful and easy to deal with. The house was very comfortable and great for the kids (we left our booster seat and a few toys to add to your collection). The beds were comfortable and the floorplan was wonderful. Just want to recommend Circa 1922 Restaurant (we had the rehearsal dinner there) for their excellent food and hospitality. Thanks for a memorable experience and we look forward to another family reunion at Magnolia House!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Julianna! We enjoyed having you at the Magnolia House. I fully agree with your recommendation of Circa 1922. It is one of my favorite restaurants in Wilmington. Thank you for the additional toys and booster seat, too! Please come back soon for another family reunion.
