Not waterfront--The true positives and negatives
Time for a real review on this property. I'll start with the positives.
The house is very nice. Good layout and nicely decorated. It had everything you need in the kitchen with all the appropriate appliances. Orcas Island is wonderful. Very quaint, but had a lot to do. The house is within walking distance to Eastsound, which is a lovely town with great shops and nice restaurants.
Now to the negatives.
This is not waterfront property. You don't even have a view of the water due to a tree obstruction. It is in a newer subdivision, so the houses are very close together. Thankfully no one seemed to be staying in the other properties or it would have been very uncomfortable. The house is right next to the airport so you have heavy traffic times and it is very loud!!
We paid for the cleaning service at the end of stay, but still had to take off the sheets and do all dishes. Not that big of deal though. However, you must take all your trash with you when you leave and trash quickly accumulates when THEY DON'T HAVE A GARBAGE DISPOSAL, and unfortunately we needed to get on the road before the dump opened so we had to haul it in our car for 800 miles.
I know we could have found much better properties than this one.
Owner's Response: Thank you for identifying that Orcas Island is indeed a special place.
As is frequently true of islands, some resources are more limited, thus the limitation of a garbage disposal being part of the waste program. Guests do have 3 options: home pickup for a nominal fee, take to the dump the day before you leave ( a 5 min drive), or pack it out, as you chose.
There is no doubt that there are grander homes located right on the water, but these, as expected, come with a much higher price. Despite our home having a limited water view, it is a 3 min walk down our wide greenbelt to a lovely park . Our neighbors put their kayaks in there and enjoy picnics , enjoying an incredible view up the sound.
Although there are 2 small stairway windows that overlook our patio, covered porch and deck, we find that the greenbelt allows freedom to lay out, play soccer or yard games, or just enjoy the occasional deer that grazes in the woods that separate our group from the town of Eastsound. We find that it is nice to be so close to the towns offerings without having people walking right by our house. Over half of our 10 home group are part timers, and we have had similar experiences as you as to most neighbors not even being around.
The airport is a few miles away, but since the island is shaped as a horseshoe, the small planes do fly overhead. It is not a terribly busy airport since Orcas is small, and we have come to wish them safe landing , even including a piece of local found art called Flying Lessons in our home .
We are glad you found our home clean, comfortable and well appointed, and are truly sorry it did not meet all of your expectations.
