We stayed at this wonderful riverfront condo in Portland for a month. We loved it. So much so that we looked on it as "our place in Portland" Still do. Wayne really goes all out to provide service and communication. His condo is well stocked with the essentials, fine linens, and a very comfortable queen sized bed. A+ in every respect.
Some things to know. The Steel Bridge provides constant entertainment. Beautiful night and day with traffic, Max trains and Railroad usage at every hour. I thought the inevitable clattering of rail cars on tracks and blaring of engine horns would be too much. It was not. Just the opposite, in fact. The Steel Bridge is owned by Union Pacific. Amtrak and freight passes by regularly. This experience was constantly fascinating.
With the Willamette River right out side, the river provides a parade of boats from freighters to kayaks to keep your view constantly changing. The large boats need the bridge raised to pass. Everything stops. The trains, the traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians all wait while the bridge raises, waits for the boats to pass, and lowers. We loved every minute.
Portland is accessible so easily from this location. We got 30 day passes from Trimet, highly recommended. We walked all over the city and downtown areas getting a huge amount of exercise and fun. We ate really well and we walked it off. We shopped and gawked and rode and walked. Rain or shine. Day or night. We had so much fun, learned so much history, and got to "know" Portland.
Trimet, all of it, buses, street cars and light rail, is a model of how public transportation is so important and useful. Max stations were within blocks of the condo, transfers to the growing street car system and thorough bus system easy, all with just a little or no waiting. We traveled Trimet and loved it.
Walking everywhere we went was easy, safe, and interesting. The Lan Su Chinese garden is just blocks away and worth visiting several times. Saturday market interesting and fun. Food carts are all over the city and mostly tasty. The main Library is a great resource. We went to plays, concerts (Pink Martini at Pioneer Square, for instance), movies (don't miss the Living Room Theater by Powell's), oh and did I mention Powell's? What a great city this is!
