If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
A group of women in our 40s stayed here for a week. It was a dump. Upon arrival we were greeted with a bad musty dirty smell, peeling paint and a very “eclectic” collection of cramped furnishing, dangling wires and owner’s personal belongings, and ants. There were no instructions how to use anything. The public areas were OK, the pool looked nice, but we were not allowed to use any of them because the owner has not paid condo association fees in years. One of the "bedrooms" had one window that opens into a storage closet. None of the smoke detectors had batteries and there was no fire extinguisher and not all the doors out of the bedrooms opened. There were no mattress pads on the bed and no top sheets on one. The really nice TV (with dangling wires) is hooked up to a VCR. The living room light/fan combo is hooked up to the switch in one of the upstairs bedrooms (we found that out after we came home, so we were in the dark all week). On the 2nd morning I was greeting with Roachzilla on my pillow when I went to make the bed and moved into one of the upstairs bedroom with another lady. There had been a bad review in 2009 and then some good ones so I thought the place had been renovated, it was not, all the things in the 2009 review are still a problem in 2012. The place has bugs, peeling paint, water damage and is a fire trap. We were charged for a golf cart that did not work, but we were not allowed to use anything on the property anyway. The Keys are really nice, and Kawama Bay isn’t bad at all, the boys at the guard shack were very sweet, but next time I go to the Keys I will be staying farther south. One night our water was shut off, apparently there was maintenance scheduled but no one informed us, we had begun looking for hotels to move to, as we assumed something else broke or the owner didn't pay that bill either. We had tried to call the owner repeatedly throughout the week, as so many things did not work, we coined a new phrase “condo camping”. Although, generally when I camp, there are fewer bugs.
Owner's Response: We want to thank you for your candid and sincere review. It was a rude awakening for the owner to see their unit in such conditions. This property is currently under new management (Gina Soares 3/22/2012). Since your review, we have fumigated and painted the entire unit. All wires and fire alarms have been addressed. All bedrooms have fresh new linens, new mattress padding, new pillows, new area rugs, new sheets, new comforters, and a whole lot more. All bathrooms have been renovated and are equipped with all new accessories and décor. We also added a handbook with all the proper information you will need for your stay (local restaurants, hospitals, food markets, local attractions, ect.). The golf cart does indeed work however due to the negligence of the past management, it was not charged properly.
Last but not least, we would like to extend an invitation for you and your friend/family for a one week stay (7 nights) at no charge to you. Let us redeem ourselves because you deserve the perfect vacation.
