A lovely, old, country estate
This small estate makes for a lovely weekend getaway from New York. I would describe it as "Rustic Luxury". The location is somewhat remote in that it is equidistant, about 30 minutes, from Ellenville, Kingston, and New Palz. In addition to your swim trunks and tennis racket, bring your bike and hiking boots. You have excellent access to Minnewaska State Park and the Mohonk Preserve. Peekamoose wilderness is also right there. Also, head down to HIgh Falls for lunch.
Outdoors, the grounds cover several acres and includes a pond with a diving/sun deck, a tennis court, plenty of grass for kids to run around on, a land lovely little stream which winds its way around the periphery. The big barn is not usable, but makes for a great backdrop. There is also an outdoor fireplace where you can lounge in the evening. From a grounds, perspective, it really was my dream estate.
The house is a very old farmhouse with a more recent addition. The original building houses a tv room (with a baby grand piano) downstairs and two large bedrooms on the second floor, and a large attic space with two double beds. The beds are comfortable, the sheets and towels clean. The bathrooms are clean too. There is good wireless, and we had weak but solid cell reception. The addition is a large, open, and very friendly space with a full, modern kitchen, and large butcher block island to socialize around while cooking, and a good sized dining table, and a couple of couches set in front of a fireplace. Almost best of all, you can open the double doors and listen the creek burbling with your morning coffee and newspaper.
My only note to folks thinking about renting this place is to make sure they understand this is a 200+ year old house. The big, creaky planks which make up the flooring do not absorb sounds. At night you can hear everything. And the decor is comfortable and functional, but not luxurious.
All in all, a perfect farmhouse estate getaway.
