This 2 bedroom, 2 bath cottage offers the ambiance of gentler times with all the comfort and luxury of the present! Sweet By and By is a quaint and peaceful home located on a very quiet street directly across from the entrance to the State Park. The setting is beautiful in the spring and summer, and even lovelier in the long, warm Virginia fall. Yet, the wooded lot, fireplace, and hot tub make Sweet By n’ By very private and cozy, and also the perfect place for a long winter weekend getaway. This home is truly wonderful during anytime of the year and the ideal place for one or two couples, or a small family.

The one-level cottage style home is located on the Craddock Creek channel of beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. The cove offers deep, wide water that is great for swimming, boating, or paddling around in its two-person canoe. The home has central air, a laundry room, and a kitchen that is fully equipped for all of your cooking needs. Appliances include a full-size refrigerator, range, dishwasher, coffee maker, microwave, and toaster oven. The kitchen is also stocked with dishes, glasses, flatware, pots, pans, and cooking utensils. A 42” HDTV in the living area is connected to cable and a DVD player. High speed wireless internet and a wireless Printer/Scanner/Copier office machine afford the opportunity to extend a weekend stay and work remotely if needed. A gas fireplace is available (except during the summer) to take the chill out of the morning air and make cuddling in the evening all that more enjoyable. Additional TVs and a DVD/VCR player can be found in the bedrooms. A gas grill and the hot tub are located under the carport, so they remain functional even in the event of inclement weather.

Looking out to the lake is a sunroom furnished with a rocking chair and lounge chairs, which are ideal for enjoying morning coffee or quiet evenings. It is a perfect way to appreciate those great lake views or to relax with a good book. The room opens to a lighted walkway. Off the top of the walkway is a fire pit equipped with a cooking grate and tools to enjoy campfire cooking. The walkway leads to a porch swing situated on a landing by the lake. The landing area can be warmed by a second fire pit. At the end of the walkway is a large dock with a sun deck. The dock’s amenities include: electrical outlets, lighting, a covered boat slip, a hoist, and a floating dock that is outfitted for mooring boats. It is a great spot for swimming, fishing, waterskiing or just kicking back and enjoying the sun! After enjoying a day on water, spend a leisurely evening around the warmth of the fire pit or pitching horseshoes, if you are looking for some friendly competition.

Also available is an RV port (w/ electric) near the entrance of the property. The property is also conveniently located near Mariners Landing Golf Course and would be ideal for a foursome interested in a golf weekend. The 5th hole at Mariners Landing, a par 3 over water, can be seen directly across the cove from the property.

About Marc

I absolutely fell in love with Smith Mountain Lake on my first visit in 2004. Now I feel extremely fortunate to be part of the lake community. By making my home available to others, I sincerely hope many more can enjoy the lake as much as my son and I do.

Marc purchased this house in 2012
Why Marc chose Huddleston

Sweet By and By is the quintessential lake cottage. It’s quaint, cozy, private, and everything you think of when imagining a place at the lake. It’s the ideal vacation place for a small family or romantic getaway for a couple.

Our happy place!

I picked Sweet By and By online last year. We had never been to SML before and never rented a house for a week, sight unseen. We were amazed! The lake was amazing. We were able to fish right off the dock at the house. Shopping was a short distance away. The sandy beach at the park was a 5 minute drive. The minute we drove up to the house, it felt like home. We opened the front door and had an immediate view of the lake. It was stocked with all the amenities we needed. The decorations were comfy without being overdone. We even used the gas fireplace in August, just because we could! The hot tub was pleasant after swimming in the lake. Overall, the experience was wonderful. We enjoyed it so much that we came back for my birthday weekend. Upgrades had been done to include wireless access, televisions in both bedrooms, and a firepit right outside the back door! We enjoyed horseshoes and just relaxing. It is our new happy place! We even made reservations for our summer vacation before we left.
Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the house and are looking forward to coming back.

Love this place!

This is our second stay at this beautiful get-away, and we are anxious to book our third. It's the perfect mountain cabin on a gorgeous sparkling lake! I've definitely noticed many upgrades since ownership changed hands last year, both in terms of amenities and cleanliness-- MUCH fresher and cleaner now! We love coming here to enjoy quiet time, canoeing, and hiking, and the hot tub is a huge plus! Our favorite spots are the sun porch and the high deck over the boat dock. The owner went out of his way to accomodate special requests that we had. I highly recommend this great lake house nestled in the trees!
Owner's Response: I appreciate the nice comments. Since purchasing the property during July 2012, I have added some new amenities and upgraded others. To date, high speed internet service, a printer/scanner/copier office machine, a fire pit, and a horseshoe pit have been added along with some board games, DVDs and water toys. The living room TV has been upgraded to a 42" HDTV that is now connected to a more expansive TV package that includes HD programming. An additional DVD player has been provided along with a TV and TV service for the second bedroom. The tattered, waterlogged hot tub cover and broken cover lift have also been replaced.

I’ve retained the same management company and cleaning service as the previous owner. I’ve rented several homes through Lake Retreat Properties over the years, including this same property before I purchased it, and I have always been very pleased with the quality and cleanliness of the homes. Still, I take an active role in the oversight of the property. I visit the property every few weeks to check on things and perform routine upkeep. I have also tried to address the issues that were noted in reviews directed to the previous owners. I’ve been conscientious about keeping the porch, carport, walkways, dock and grounds around the house reasonably clear of cobwebs, leafs, weeds and debris. Although the lot is heavily wooded, I try my best to make sure the outside of the property is as presentable as the inside.

Weekend Getaway

This is a charming, lovely home. the antique pictures, books and funiture add character to the place. My husband and I came for a weekend get away. Our friends came for brunch Sunday morning and we had a wonderful day eating, talking and laughing. It is very quiet here this time of year. Very peaceful. This is our first visit to Sweet, but have stayed in another house on the lake for several years. The restaurants that we like the best are Falons and Jonathan's. I hope we will stay here again. It is indeed a Sweet place. We love the state park too. Great trails for walking.

Buyer Beware of Rental Agency

2 of 5
Submitted: September 22, 2010 Stayed: June 2010
My family and I spent Father's Day weekend at this cabin. The cabin itself was fine, for the price. The yard was unkept and the decks needed some maintenance as they were splintering in places, but we were there so very little, we chose not to complain. Our frustration occurred after coming home from the weekend. I contacted the rental agency several times to ask for my deposit back. Oddly, your deposit can be debited in one day, but it takes up to 45 days for the refund. I was emailed by a representative stating that deposits can take up to 45 days and that they were "running around 4 weeks." At 47 days I emailed again and was told that they were cutting checks that week and I should receive the deposit shortly.

You can imagine my surprise when only half of my deposit was returned with a letter from the pricipal of the agency stating that the "screen door needed repair" upon my family's departure. Since my husband and I inspected the entire property prior to leaving, and the fact that I live by the "leave it better than you found it" principle, I was shocked. I immediately sent an email to the agency asking for an explanation and documentation. Well I am still waiting for a reply and it has been another 40 days or so....

As I stated in my title....buyer beware of the rental agency!
Owner's Response: As a management company, we are here to protect the interests of the owner and one of our duties is to see that the property is cared for and left in "as good or better" condition than when the tenant moves in. Unfortunately, in this case we ran into a disgruntled tenant. Our cleaner takes meticulous care of the property on a regular basis and noted a rip in the screened door which had not been there prior to this tenant's visit. After the repair, the remaining portion of the tenant's deposit was returned-39 days after their departure. Our agency takes pride in our rental properties and strives to ensure that each tenant is treated fairly and welcomed into a well maintained property.

Never-the-less, this type of situation will not arise in the future. We no longer protect the property with a refundable security deposit. The property is now protected by accidental damage insurance that is purchased by tenants as part of their rental contracts.

Sweet By and By - Wonderful Weekend

My husband and I just had a weekend getaway for our 19th Wedding Anniversary and had the best time! The house is perfect, cozy and welcoming. We enjoyed the fireplace and it was very easy to operate. Having a private dock and being so close to the water was great. The home was very clean and comfy and the view of the lake from the sunroom was fabulous. We chose to eat most of our meal there. I would absolutely recommend this property! Another big plus is being so close to the State Park and the winery. Fishing was fantastic! The conoe was also an added plus and since the property is located on a quiet cove, you didn't have to be worried about being mowed down by any bigger boats.

Wonderful vacation

We found the place clean and well-supplied. The lake was beautiful, the weather was great, and we truly enjoyed our stay. The fireplace didn't really want to turn on, but it was warm so we didn't need it, and we did have some ants one day but spraying some spray took care of that, although there may be a hill somewhere in the wall in the kitchen that we couldn't reach.

However, our trip ended with an engagement, so any minor issues really weren't the focus of our stay! We loved every minute.

Lovely Home, Beautiful Location!

4 of 5
Submitted: July 9, 2008 Stayed: June 2008
We spent a week in this lovely two-bedroom home overlooking SML, just before the 4th of July. You'll love the sunroom and sitting down on the dock reading as the boats and jet skis zip back and forth. The home is well furnished and the kitchen is well equipped. The was immaculate and very comfortable. What the ad didn't say (or we missed) is that the large bedroom has a king and the smaller bedroom has a queen sized bed - plan your linens accordingly. The rental agency was polite, fast and efficient and the property was easy to find. There is a lit wooden walkway from the house down to the dock. We didn't count them, but the guest book said there were 68 steps. The dock has a water-level dock and a boat lift as well as a "second floor" where there is a large deck for sitting with plenty of patio furniture provided.

This is a very nice getaway location, particularly for a couple (or two couples). The house is not child-proofed (e.g. kitchen cabinets don't have latches), but the house is all on one level so stairs aren't involved (other than those down to the dock). The hot tub was nice, was well maintained and is located outside, but under cover. The gas grill was fully functional and grill utensils are provided.

The house has well water, but it tastes good and has no odor. There are two full baths, the master having two sinks in the vanity. The kitchen is large and inviting, as are the dining area and the living room. Being on the north side of SML, it easier to take day trips to Roanoke and Lynchburg than if it were on the south side.

We enjoyed our stay and would recommend Sweet By and By to those wanting to be in a clean, comfortable, spacious house in a wooded environment right on a large lake that has lots of activity.
