About Catherine or David Costopoulos

My husband David and I (married for 20 yrs) have owned the Sharpsburg Cottage since 2000 when our second daughter Christina was born. David is a general contractor and we commit to one grand improvement of the property every year. It is a blessing that David is so talented and committed to upgrading the country cottage for us and our clients. We live in Silver Spring Maryland and have two daughters in Catholic School. One at St. Bernadette and one at The Academy of the Holy Cross. I am a Commercial Property Manager and have over 20 years experience managing rental properties. I love working with our clients and hearing their stories of how much the enjoyed staying at the cottage. We love to spend time in the country and because it is only 1 hr from the house we can get there and back in a weekend very easily. What a great place to relax. I hope you will come and visit us sometime. Take care, Catherine

Why Catherine or David Costopoulos chose Sharpsburg

This property is a great get away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. You can really relax here at the cottage. Take a nap on the hammock or unwind in the hot tub.

What makes this cottage unique

We fell in love with this property because of its location. The C&O Can and Tow Path are located just beyond our front yard. We spend time walking and biking along the path during our visits to the house. We are five minutes from Antietam and many other local attractions. We used to spend every weekend in the country so the cottage is fully equipped as if it were are primary residence. Our lives have become very busy so we don't spend as much time as we would like, so we have decided to share our experience with other. ENJOY!!

My husband and I and our four kids stayed here over the Eater weekend and had a lovely time. The house was perfect for us- clean, neat and attractive. I thought it was actually nicer than the pictures. There is a little back porch area that has a hammock and chairs that is adorable and a swingset, which our younger kids loved. There was ample space for all of us and the kitchen was well- stocked with spices, pots and pans, coffee maker etc. The owners have also stocked the house with a great kid friendly movie selection- Ours were thrilled and we watched a movie every night while we were here. WE loved the deck in the back that overlooked a beautifully landscaped front yard and we enjoyed looking out at the stars from the hot tub at night. The location cannot be beat. The house looks out onto the C&O canal through some woods. We took our bikes and everday all six of us went for a bike ride on the canal path, even our youngest whose bike has training wheels. The C&O path is quiet, level and an easy ride right by the water ( with no cars of course!). The house is also very close to several historic locations. We enjoyed Harpers Ferry and especially the Antietam Battlefield. The owners have compiled an excellent notebook that gives details on all the attractions in the area as well as specific directions on how to get to each. This was so helpful! the weather in April was gorgeous- 70 degrees every day- we were so lucky. The kids had an Easter hunt on the beautiful front lawn and we hung out on the chairs on the back patio watching. This house had all the amenties a family needed and unlike other ones we have rented, was really well stocked with supplies for cooking, which we did a lot of. We did not go out to restaurants in the area though the notebook that the owners compiled lists a number of them. We so enjoyed our stay and we may be repeat customers! I would highly recommend this house to families and couples. It is wonderfully quiet at night and a beautiful country setting. Thank you Catherine and David!
Owner's Response: We are thrilled our guests enjoy the cottage as much as we do! We wish we could spend more time there ourselves!!

Relaxing cottage in the woods

We had a lovely weekend at this charming cottage in the woods. It was literally one hour and 10 minutes from our house in Silver Spring, MD - amazing! - and yet it felt like we were worlds away. We explored Antietam battlefield, lunched and shopped in Shepherdstown, went pumpkin picking in Martinsburg, hiked the C&O path, and even ran some errands in Charles Town - but we need to go back to see Harper's Ferry! Thanks for a cozy spot in the woods - we really had a lot of fun!

My girlfriend, her son and I enjoyed this property and it is in the perfect location spot. So much to see and nice surroundings. It was a nice location for my son and my grand kids to come over also, they live in Haggerstown about 25 minutes away. We would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a nice spot to go for a vacation. A lot of history to see and enjoy. Well maintained place, lots of attractions to go to. We were there for a week and still didn't get to see everything we would loved to see, but we will definitely go back to this cottage again.

It is always exciting when you first enter a rented cottage. Does it match with your expectations? This lovely house in Sharpsburg really did!

What we most enjoyed was to feel the love with which this cottage is maintained by it's owners. By the way it was equipped you could sense their hospitality. We immediately felt at home.

It's a very quiet place (except from all the animal sounds at night) with deer grazing only a few feet from the front door. So relax!
And if not: within 1,5 hour your in downtown Washington.

A comfortable house surrounded by nature

We enjoyed our stay here in the Sharpsburg area. At the house we had a very relaxing time enjoying the quiet surroundings, hot tub, nature and the walk on the towpath. We learned more about the Civil War by visiting Antietam Battlefield, Harpers Ferry, WV, and Gettysburg, PA. We took a boat ride on C&O Canal at the Great Falls in Potomac, MD . We had a wonderful stay and would recommend this house and area for Civil War history buffs.

As for food in the area, I personally recommend the BLT at Blue Moon Cafe and dessert at the Sweet Shop Bakery both located in nearby Shepherdstown. Internet connection is available at both places as well as their library. We also attended a local performance at Shepherd University.

The downside to our stay was the oversight of the owners not giving us the information needed to gain entrance into the house upon our arrival. Several attempts were made starting the week before to contact them - via email, cell phones and their home phone (their answering machine memory was full so could not leave a message at their house). There was no return contact from them until one hour after the permitted check in time. We were fortunate that they made contact with us when they did as we were within 2 miles of the house and cell phone service is not available there.

To contact the owners using the house phone you must have a calling card as out going long distant calls are understandably blocked.

The owners are very nice people and were accommodating and apologized for their oversight, but it was still very unnerving when I was traveling from Alabama not knowing whether I could get into the house or not.

Owner's Response: I thought I had given her the access code and felt terrible when I received her call and had not sent it to her sooner. Loli and I had many conversations and emails back and forth over the months prior to her arrival. She even unexpectedly stopped by the house with her sister a month before her rental date and we happily gave her a tour of the cottage. We were away on summer vacation at the same time Loli and her brothers and sisters arrived. That contributed to us not communicating that week. I now send the code along with every rental confirmation.

Enjoyed Our Stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this vacation property. It is located in a very private and quiet area about 1 1/2 miles from the town of Sharpsburg. If you're a history buff, love to fish, canoe, or just simply relax, then this is the place for you. The owners have the home adequately furnished with everything you need. The only negative we found, was that we ran out of water on day 4.

We had a wonderful stay at this quite cottage in the country! Everything was just as we anticipated, the only surprise was just how really beautiful and serene the cottage setting was. We enjoyed the many close by activities and relaxing on the deck. The owners were very customer service orientated both before and after our stay. We would definitely return to this cottage and recommend it for a great vacation destination.

We made our first visit to Western MD and this beautiful home and it won't be our last. The cottage is located on a quiet street, nestled in the woodland. The home is close to all cival war sites and the towpath is basically in the front yard. The hosts are very friendly and maintain a clean and beautiful property.

Beautiful property but no washing machine or dryer that is hooked up. Also we ran out of water to take a shower so we had to leave early because the owner would not call us back. We have left messages on their cell phones and e-mail and no response. I would say to use paypal when Home Away encourages one to do so you do not get taken. When we arrived the home was also no ready.
Owner's Response: We feel this is a unfair review. We do not offer a washer and dryer at this time in our ad and we did return her calls. They arrived early and we were making the beds, the house was ready otherwise. The water was distrupted due to a leak that has been repaired.
