An avid outdoors-man, who nonetheless lives and works in Manhattan.
I looked for years in the Catskills before settling on Andes, NY, as the ideal Catskills town, and this as the ideal getaway cabin. I bought it from the original owner, then restored and modernized it. It has the benefit of having no other houses in it's expansive view across the peaks of Catskill Park and the East Branch of the Delaware River. At night, all one can see from the deck is stars over the mountain peaks. Because the surrounding land is protected by NYC DEP and New York State, that view will never change. It truly is the best of both worlds.
This cabin was built by the original owner in 1970. He patterned it after US Forest Service cabins from the 1950's, which are still dotted here and there in the Catskills. The white pine logs were milled in Arkville, hauled to the site, then hand-cut by the original owner and his brother that summer. You can still see the marks from their tools in some of the beams. It was the first house on this particular part of the mountain and as such sits on the highest habitable point. It is literally the end of the road. Because there was no electricity on the mountain until the mid 1980's, the original cabin had gas lighting, a fireplace for heat, and gravity fed spring water. These days it has well water, electric lights, gas heat, and all the modern conveniences, but still retains that the rustic charm synonymous with the Catskills.
