Good vacation ended too early with Hurricane Irene
We have been going to Emerald Isle for about 8 years now, and have always enjoyed the beautiful and uncrowded beaches. This house has wonderful accommodations for a large group, which consisted of 6 adults and 2 teenagers. With the three stories, there is plenty of privacy if you want it, or everyone can be in the large open concept living area. Lots of room for the three cooks, and we could watch the large screen TV while in the kitchen area. We enjoyed evenings on the top deck, almost as much as we enjoyed looking out in the morning to see the ocean waves. The lower deck is a great spot for relaxing and reading during the day.
The walk to the beach is not much longer than if you had accommodations on the beach. The new walkway is directly across the small beach road, and it is easy to get all of the beach essentials there and back. For the significant difference in price, this is an excellent bargain.
We always make a trip to Captain Willis for some delicious shrimp, and usually plan a trip to either Beaufort or the Aquarium during our stay.
Unfortunately, this year all was cut short because of Hurricane Irene. The owner phoned me during the week and advised where we could find hurricane information online (there is computer access in the home). She was concerned with our safety, which was much appreciated. We did get the news of a mandatory evacuation on Thursday afternoon and had to hurriedly pack and get off the island within a few hours. We hated to leave, as we still had more relaxing days on the beach to go and more great meals to cook, but that is the chance you take when going to the beach.
The owner did contact me via email and said that she would refund the days that we missed at the beach. It is nice to deal with an actual person rather than an automated voicemail, and I think that is a distinct advantage of booking this property.
Fortunately, Emerald Isle appears to have come through without any horrible damage, and hopefully will be there for many more years for all of us to enjoy.
