Very disappointed.... RAT INFECTATION
I've traveled for vacation to SD yearly for the past 7 years, lived from Mission Beach to Oceanside. Some properties were better than others, but I've never had a worse experience than my most recent stay. First, some of the positives, the house was easy to find off the freeway and in a pretty decent neighborhood. Also the properties was relative well stocked with simple things such as plates, utensils, etc. Now you may ask, what makes the property so problematic.
On our second day of stay, I woke up to find food on the kitchen counter top with nibble bites and rat dropping on the floor. Imagine my horror when my young kid is playing on the floor! Complained to the owner, who immediately blamed the neighbor next door for not keeping their yard clean, rather than taking responsibility for keeping the property clean. If they had known of this possible problem, before I moved in, there should have been a warning. Obviously this is quite unacceptable and a serious public health hazzard. I told the owner that this is something that needs to be taken care of ASAP before the next tenant arrives and was told that they would do so. To my surprise, after I left, I received an email stating that my claims of rat infestation was FALSE...pretty much I am being accused as a liar and made up the story. Completely unacceptable! I am sure the owner will try to refute this since they claim they didn't see the rat dropping (I guess I need to "save" the rat droppings for them to verify). But as a tenant, you can either risk these potential health problems living with rats or hope that the owners take this issue more seriously. As everyone knows, deadly diseases have been known to be transmitted by rats.
Just a few additional smaller issues that potential tenants should be aware and already has been mentioned in OTHER reviews:
- the house is next to a big street, because of no AC in the house, you have to keep the windows open. It gets LOUD from the street traffic, even at night
- the kitchen areas was not clean when I first moved in.....another reviewer had also mentioned this.
As much as I hate to write suboptimal reviews, due to the seriousness of the health problems associated with rat infestation and the refusal of the owners to acknowledge this problem, potential tenants need to BEWARE.
Owner's Response: For those of you who will read my response to Dr. KH I would like to mention that these guest were not respectful of my property.
My contract reads
Prior to vacating the Home, Tenant is responsible to dispose of all trash and recyclable, ensure all dishes and cookware are clean, and return any furniture that was moved to its original position.
They broke 2 of the curtain vaines in the living room.
They moved furniture from room to the next and brought out door furniture in.
In the three days they stayed I do not believe they ever did a dish.
Yes there was probably a mouse in the house!
Before I realized the condition of my home I offered to put them up in a 5 star time share up the street. I offered 2 , 2 bedroom condos
I was trying to accommodate them if there was truly an infestation!
They opted to stay in my home.
I also believe this review was written because I did not refund them for there inconvenience.
I did mention when they moved in that my Gardner had seen critters in the yard , most likely because the property was being cleared next door.
I suggested they not leave doors open at night.
My husband went to the property that day.
He called an exterminator immediately.
8 LARGE traps were set in the home that day.
They did not catch anything
I did not accuse Dr KH of lying. The mouse just didn't stay long or he had enough of their left overs.
In all the years I have offered my home to others I have never had such a vindictive guest.
This is the email I received from Dr. KH after his stay at my property.
Just want to say thank you for your kind service in helping us deal with the rodent issues. Despite the problem, my family had a good time traveling in SD.
Thank you for listening.
