Fun in the sun

We had a great week in Luquillo in this condo. The water at the beach is blue and beautiful. We had never experienced such "rural tropical" beauty. You can walk a couple hundred yards on the beach to the right of the condo and see nothing but palm trees and coconuts as you play in the waves...awesome!

Luquillo is also a great place to stay because it is close to all of the fun activities on the island: snorkeling, kayaking, rain forest, ferries to Culebra and Vieques.

Nice TV, kitchen, couch, dining area, ocean-front balcony. Owner is very knowledgeable about Puerto Rico and is very responsive to emails and phone calls. Gave us a lot of direction in planning our activities and made some great restaurant recommendations. Would definitely come back!

Owner's Response: I am glad you guys had a good time. The beach to right is a 5 mile nature preserve. In March and April the turtles come and lay their eggs on the beach and they are HUGE. There is a lot to do in the area as you mention. I enjoy going to the Puerto Rican Virgin Islands as well. I went last summer and was amazed that Vieques has really become a trendy spot. There were cajun, thai, haitain you name restaurants on the island.

We will continue to go the extra mile.

The view from the condo was hard to beat. You could see the ocean and the beaches for miles and miles. The beach right outside the condo became our favorite place as the waves were huge. We loved taking the boogie boards and swimming in the ocean. All in all, we had a great time in Luquillo and enjoying all of the awesome food around the condo. We would definitely come back for another vacation.

Incredible Beach

This condo's greatest asset is that it sits adjacent to an incredible undeveloped and wild beach that stretches several miles east. You take the elevator down, walk onto the beach, turn right, and your are alone. My wife and I walked it almost daily and hiking for over 90 minutes east of the condo you see nothing but ocean, dunes, sand, and the tropical forest. The only people we saw were a sea turtle reseacher and a Department of Natural Resources employee patrolling the beach. I brought my snorkeling gear with me and one hour hike from the condo is a quiet cove that is great for swimming through the reef. There are over 200 marked sea turtle nests on the beach and every day we saw fresh Leatherback Sea Turtle tracks from the night before leading to and away from the new nests. This condo is also only 10 minutes from Fajardo (ferry to Vieques and Culebra) and 20 minutes from Ceiba where we chartered a cheap flight to Culebra for the day--an amazing adventure in itself. I recommend this for anyone who desires a real beach experience--seeing how Puerto Rico may have looked when Juan Ponce De Leon was governor, 500 years ago.

Great location and condo has all you need

My family (6 of us including 2 children and 2 grandparents) stayed at this condo in mid May 2011. Despite having more rain than even the locals could remember, we had a wonderful time staying at this condo in Luquillo with a few nice days (we knew May was the rainy season but it had more day long overcast/rains than usual). It is very close to the rain forest (amazing), a short 15 min. drive over to Fajardo (we took the ferry over to Culebra and spent the day at Flamenco Beach which is truly breath taking), and it only a half hour or so to San Juan which we didn't spend too much time in due to the small children but it was great to see/experience as well. Luquillo Beach (a short three minute drive) is also a great place to spend the day either for couples or a family; it has very calm waters to swim in, is exceptionally clean, nice facilities, a great little lunch spot with beer, alcoholic drinks and non-alcholic drinks alike; definitely pay the $5 or so to park in the actual park area as the area behind the kioskos is totally trashed by the locals. The kioskos are very unique to eat at and offer a great variety with our favorite being El Jeffe Burger. Other stand alone restaurants we also liked in Luquillo were the Brass Cactus (2 min. drive) where we ate twice, Pasta y Pueblo (sp?) which had the best food in the world for the very modest shack it is in, and Lolita's mexican restaurant (4 min. drive) was also great. The little surfer bar on the la pared beach just to the left of the condo was a great place for adults to hang out in the afternoon.
I did not find this as a negative as my wife and I have traveled out of the country to many island locations and we were aware of the poverty level area around the condo complex, but vacationers should be aware that the area (not beach front) surrounding the condo is a very poor/depressed community. This is typical of many carribean islands with the nice beachfront condos/resorts and directly behind them is the ghetto. We didn't go out much at night (walking) but during the day all of the people were nice and welcoming. My parents had not been out of the continental U.S. before and it took them a couple days to build up their comfort level as it is definitely different than Florida, etc.
I would recommed this condo and trip to families or couples who want to experience a great place and different culture. Also, Spanish is the primary language but everywhere we went someone spoke english.

Perfect Vacation

This was a perfect rental. We comfortably slept 7 people. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking gear and having a washer and dryer is invaluable when you have lots of people swimming and using towels. The place was clean and nicely furnished. It is only 40 minutes from the airport and very close to grocery stores and restaurants. The property is also close to El Yunque and the Fajardo ferry. There is an icecream shop and a bakery within walking distance. The complex is secure and manned 24 hours a day. The beach is beautiful, but a little rough for swimming - not really a problem since the lovely swimming beach is just minutes away. The owners provide a detailed explanation of the property and how to navigate issues. This was my 3rd trip to Sandy Hills and I could have used this kind of clear information the first time I came. Emails were promptly answered. My advice is to read the information the owners provide -( put water in the lint trap or else you will scraping lint off of the walls!) We would absolutely choose this rental again. Read the journal in the condo from people who have stayed before. There are lots of great tips. Puerto Rico is the best place to vacation.

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your vacation. I agree PR is the best place to vacation. There are tons of things to do right in the area. A few new restaurants opened within 5 minute walking distance of the condo. My favorite is Boardriders where the beer is around 2 dollars each and it is right on the beach. The new zip line is another favorite. I finally got to walk on the beach to the right of the building. I walked for 1 hour without seeing anything except a few iguanas. Looking forward to my nex trip.

We will continue to go the extra mile.

First time to Puerto Rico

Submitted: March 25, 2011 Stayed: March 2011
We stayed on the 18th floor and the views from the balcony were fantastic! We spent quite a bit of time out there just reading and enjoying the constant breeze.
The beds and all furnishing were very comfortable.. Everything we needed was there, especially the boogie boards! We were told repeatedly not to swim just in front of the building. This area is between two natural lava reefs and has dangerous rip tides. Just a few hundred yards to the east the water was great. My 78 yr old mother was swimming with us there!
The beach was like Jurassic park, loads of iguanas running around there.
We made the mistake of thinking we could get off the main highway and cut through the mountains for a scenic shortcut to Utuado for zip lining. After 5 hours on goat path switchbacks, we realized that we would miss our appointment! We laugh about it now!!
Thankfully I had upgraded the rental car to a Ford Explorer...but it was still a grueling trip.
I would definitely recommend this accommodation. We hope to return next year!

Owner's Response: We are glad you had a good time. There is a beginners zip line in Luquillo, I have yet to try the one in Utuado but it sounds good. I agree totally about the roads. Trying to save time via the little roads never workds out.

We will continue to go the extra mile.

Nice and secure building. Good furnishings and cold AC. Will stay again when I return.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Adventure Seekers, Girls Getaway, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers
Owner's Response: Glad you had a good time. We actually replaced all the ACs with interior models. They are much sleeker and look nicer than the wall mounted versions. We replaced the faucets in the shower and added decorative tile to the shower. There are 3 new restaurants within walking distance. My favorite is boardriders surf bar right on the beach. Cheap beer - I was paying one dollar a can for the local beer and good burgers. The regaee bands really bring in a crowd. There is a new ice cream shop in the town square and they have good coffee. We tried the zip line on the way to the rainforest. It is a good beginner zip line and if you mention my name you get 10 dollars off per person. If you walk to the right through the nature preserve on the beach in one hour's time you come do another coral reef. I swam at this beach and was able to watch a nice 2 foot barracuda swimming around pretty cool. The condo is loaded with all the provisions for the year.

We will continue to go the extra mile.

Fantastic Week in Luquillo

5 of 5
Submitted: December 4, 2010 Stayed: October 2010
I'm recently back from a week's stay in mid-October at Luxury in Luquillo II. The entire experience - from the start here on Home Away to the actual vacation - was terrific and I hope to repeat it again in the future.

I have to tip my hat to Michael the owner. The unit is incredibly well maintained and was stocked with the essentials we needed (including beach chairs, beach towels, boogie boards.. on top of the paper towels, toilet paper, etc) which allowed us to start vacation immediately.

Of course we took time to head over to the nearby Wal-Mart and grocery store to stock up on things we'd want for the week, but it was so nice to know that doing those errands could wait! We came into the unit and found it was all set & ready to go. We went straight down to the beach and relaxed with the sunlight that remained that day.

The beach is a huge selling point. On the beach, if you turn your back to the condo tower, there is nothing but undeveloped beach as far as the human eye can see. While we were there, it was not uncommon for us to be the only ones on the beach.

The itinerary Michael suggests has all the insights you'd expect from someone who really knows the area. The only thing we didn't get to do was the bio-luminescent tour, but we'll save that for next time. The local food suggestions were spot-on and we enjoyed everything from the local bakery to El Jefe burger shack along "cholesterol alley."

The location is a very nice one - and is especially good for anyone looking to escape San Juan and see other parts of the island. The proximity to the rain forest is very helpful.

The complex itself is older - I would guesstimate it was built in the 70's.
The parking garage where we had a space was dimly lit, but I did notice a light that had burned out was quickly replaced during our stay.

The condo unit itself is well furnished, very comfortable and has plenty of space.

We found the owner to be incredibly responsive and helpful at every step of this experience (first time on Home Away for me!).

I hope to return in the future and would recommend this unit to anyone looking to stay outside San Juan and is looking for a beautiful setting.

I look forward to riding the waves in February.

Hi!
Thank you for your response. Greatly appreciated.

The week was terrific - did just about everything on your itinerary and had a great time:
- Brass Cactus & the bakery in town square
- El Yunque Rain Forest
- El Conquistador

Loved the food shacks (aka: 'cholesterol alley') along Route 3 - stopped there several times
Plus the beach on the property itself - empty & undeveloped as far as the human eye can see.

All in all, memorable & worth coming back again in the future!

Great Condo!!!

Submitted: September 22, 2010 Stayed: September 2010
We spent Labor Day weekend at this condo at let me tell you...the pictures do not give this condo proper justice! The views from the ocean balcony are spectacular as are the views of the rain forest from 2 of the 3 bedrooms. The owner Mike was very helpful with restaurant/tourist information prior to our arrival as well as during our stay. We had a minor issue with the hurricane shutters being locked upon arrival but Mike was quick to help us and had the maid over to the condo within a couple hours to open them. Frankly, I was a little embarrassed that us men weren't able to open these shutters and these 2 ladies used their strength to open them within a matter of minutes. I guess they needed "Girl Power". lol I have outlined my pros and cons below and believe me...the pros outweigh the cons! :-)

PROS:

1. Excellent views throughout the condo including the ocean balcony.
2. Access to the beautiful private beach (perfect for peace and quiet).
3. Nice kitchen with all the utensils you will need. There was also some box foods and spices available for use in the cupboards (probably from prior tenants) so no need to buy any. We added a few more things to the cupboards. :-)
4. Washing machine/dryer conveniently located in the kitchen.
5. Condo was well stocked with supplies/towels/games etc..
6. Conveniently located near the Biobays and El Yunque Rainforest.

CONS:

1. I had no cons at all with the condo itself. The issue I had is that the condo is about 45 minutes away from San Juan. With PR's heavy rush hour traffic, the commute back and forth can be even longer. If you plan on spending most of your time in the Luquillo area or don't mind the commute to San Juan, then I'd say this condo should be first on your list!
2. The private beach access gate closes at 6pm. If you would like to go later, you have to walk 2 short blocks through local streets to cut through the public beach access (Note: There's a great local bar across from the public beach access for those that want to grab a beer with the locals).
3. Parking was about 3 floors underground in this dimly lit garage and a little scary. It became a running joke amongst us. lol But I wouldn't let that deter you...no complaint because parking is free!

Overall...this is a great condo and you cannot beat the price in terms of accomodations, amenities etc.. And Mike is the "host with the mostest". :) He gave us a wealth of information. Enjoy your stay!
