We visited Malu Wahi Feb 10-24, 2013, with our three young adult children, two grandmas and a brother and sister in law (9 people in all). We had a great time in Kona, and the property was in the perfect location for enjoying all of the activities we had planned. All of our excursions to other island cities and towns (including Hilo and Volcano National Park) were day trips, and we returned to the house every evening. The pictures of the property and description on-line are very accurate. We read reviews on the property before our stay, and were somewhat apprehensive about our choice, but once we arrived we found that all was well. We were hoping for a good location and plenty of space, and Malu Wahi provided both. We did not have expectations of a 5 star hotel, but instead enjoyed a family home where everyone could be comfortable. We would definitely stay here again if we were travelling with a large group. We found the owner and the staff at Kona Coast Vacations to be friendly and helpful. Some of our recommendations for excursions include Big Island Eco Adventures ziplining in Hawi, the Blue Hawaiian Helicopters tour of the volcano from Hilo, the Segway tour at the Botanical Garden near Hilo and whale watching on The Spirit of Kona at the pier in Kailua. We enjoyed snorkeling, especially the fish and coral at "Two-Step". Don't miss Kikaua and Kua beaches and driving the Saddle Road. We enjoyed fish tacos at Bite Me, burgers at Annie's and fine dining at the Bamboo restaurant in Hawi. The Costco location in Kona was very handy and was a great place to stock up for our hungry family. A copy of "The Big Island Revealed" is a good resource for planning and has great maps for navigation. Many thanks to Micki for inviting us into her Hawaiian home!

We have been going to Hawaii for years but this trip was extra special. I've been vacationing at Malu Wahi since I was a teenager and this was the first time I brought my kids back to this house. The privacy, the weather, the openness of the house, the full library, use of all beach essentials, the pool and backyard with a picture perfect sunset view and the most relaxing swing I've ever rocked in. Our friends came over from Maui with their two kids for the weekend and we had a total of 10 people in the home at once and it still felt huge. We had Easter dinner at the table fit for The Brady Bunch. Great playgrounds right down the street as well as several beautiful beaches, restaurants and grocery stores. The house was clean and convenient and we really felt "at home" for the week. I highly recommend this home for anyone with kids or anyone that wants to come and relax in a beautiful, comfortable place I like to call paradise.

This lovely home offered everything the eight of us needed to relax and spend time together. The living areas made socializing easy, yet there were plenty of private spots for solitude. We were all charmed by the pool, the lovely view, the geckos, anoles, bird life and of course the amazing island of Hawaii itself. We could drive easily to several wonderful snorkel, swim spots. We went horse back riding, night time snorkeling with Manta Rays (a MUST!) and rambled about both of the big volcanoes. The owner and the vacation rental people were very helpful in every way. This was a treasured time for us, truly a place of calm and peace.

Lovely location with spectacular views of the Pacific Sunsets!! Pool area is very private and inviting. Beach is 10 mins away with fantastic SCUBA diving nearby!

Our young children, two sets of grandparents, and aunt spent 2 wonderful weeks in this large, well-equipped and comfortable home. The house was clean with a large living area, kitchen, and long dining table for big meals and entertaining. Each bedroom was spacious and comfortable. With 9 of us in all, we always felt there was enough room to read, make meals, watch TV, visit or have some privacy.

Highlights include the fantastic sunsets, the porch swing, all the little geckos that keep you guessing where they are, the comfortable couches, and the pool! While the pool was cooler than the ocean water, it was certainly appreciated once it got hot enough to take a dip. The grounds are beautiful, with flowers, palm trees, and bushes. There are no lights at night below the house, so the star gazing is quite wonderful.

The house is tucked on a quiet road, which is fun to explore- papaya trees, countless varieties of palm, and flowering bushes. You are close to the main highway, so it is quick to get north to the Kohala beaches, or south to the good snorkeling (Captain Cook). There are loads of amenities nearby and the house is well stocked with kitchen equipment, internet, TV/DVD etc.

Kona Coast Vacations, who helps take care of the property, was helpful in getting the wireless internet working, and prompt in taking care of any questions related to the safe. The owner was also very helpful in providing information and answered any questions via email expeditiously.

It is a fabulous house for large families. Highly recommend it to those who want a spacious, simple, well-equipped home to base your adventures from.

We loved Mauna Kea, Makalewena, Hapuna, and Kua Bay beaches and our day trip to Hawi and Polul'u beach. Snorkeling at Two Step was a highlight, as we swam with dolphins! Catch breakfast at the Coffee Shack with the incredible view as you head south to Volcano National Park or snorkeling at Captain Cook.

We would go back to this house, should the Big Island beckon us and our relatives again.

We stayed at Malu Wahi for a week in July '09. We were group of 2 young families with children and an old couple(19 mos. to 67!) We felt that we all had our own comfortable spot whether it was on the outside swing, the pool (poolside) or the bright dining room. Everyone had a great time at Malu Wahi! The house was well equipped with everything, including beach and pool gears which former renters left. Kids loved the pool! (Grown-ups too!) It was lovely to take a walk on Walua Rd. before the sun starts beating on the earth. The air was so fresh and it was so much fun to check out native plants along the way. The sunset was speechless; you don't have to go anywhere to enjoy the famous Hawaiian sunset. The large windows in the dining room are your movie screen to watch the unforgettable sight!!! We loved it. Star gazing at night was amazing too.
The house was located at a very convenient place. Keauhou shopping center, where you can get basically everything, was maybe 5 min. away. My best favorite snorkeling beach, Kahalu'u beach, was within 10 min. You can drive to Kona coast line to shop and dine in a short drive. (10-15min.) Even Walmart, Borders and Target were there in 15 min. distance!!! We also went to Mauna Kia summit and Kilauea Volcano park from this house. Very convenient, yet you can stay away from "regular" tourists to enjoy true Hawaiian atmosphere in this rural setting.
Micki, the owner, was very sincere and always answered my questions promptly through email. The agency on the island was very nice too. We truly enjoyed our vacation and love to go back to Malu Wahi. I recommend the house with no hesitation!

The house was very spacious, well maintained and was great for our group of nine (including four children). We all had our own space but it was great to enjoy the private pool, well stocked kitchen and large eating area. We were very comfortable staying here and felt at home.

There were many recommendations of things to do & places to visit while on the Island. The house is close to shopping, great view of the ocean (when it wasn't cloudy) and other activities.

I would certainly recommend this home when visiting Kona with a group.
