Our stay at Mack's Shack was incredible. We had a great trip to Maui overall and this place was a major highlight. Our flight was very delayed so we got there late at night and couldn't see anything except that the house was very nice inside. We literally woke up the next day in paradise and couldn't believe our eyes! The isolated feeling was incredible but access to Hana road was right there too. Panoramic ocean views, with various palm trees in the foreground - amazing. Pictures can't do justice to a place like this but it was truly beautiful. There are little treasures all over the property - lots of different fruit trees, for the more techy minded like me, the solar power and rain water encatchment system were cool! The outdoor shower is very cool. Further out around the property is this extremely thick and deep grass that you can literally bounce on, so we termed it mattress grass - really a unique find. We took the advice from the booklet and hiked up the hill a ways - strongly recommend doing this, as you'll be completely alone and see a view of the Hana coastline that virtually no one visiting Maui will see. From the house, we explored all around Hana, black sand beach, red sand beach, Hana Bay, Hamoa Beach, got seaside massages in Hana, waianapanapa, Ohio gulch pools and hike to the 400-ft waterfall. From there we ventured on to the roadside Thai restaurant, then the roadside coffee hut, then the crazy sketchy road beyond there (fair warning, not for the faint of heart!!!), saw Lindberg's grave. Last thing - if you are there on a Friday or Saturday night, just down the road from Mack's Shack toward Hana, there's a roadside hut serving pizza cooked in clay ovens until about 8:00pm. Totally cool experience and great opportunity to meet some locals! We recommended Mack's Shack to numerous people we met around Hana, people in Kaanapali, and to friends/relatives after we got home. If you have a nose for adventure and like off-the-beaten path experiences, but with the creature comforts of a nice and well-kept place, you will love Mack's Shack.
