Hilltop Cabin was as described and better. The location is great, close to a public boat launch where you can fish the Shenandoah, great country for cycling, and only a short drive to the National Park. The cabin is well prepared, spotless, warm and with all necessities, including linens and plenty of towels to use after the fantastic hot tub. The place is beautiful, with a rustic look, but with luxury appointments, full kitchen with washer, hot tub (indoor and out) etc. A true gem, we will be back.

My wife and I chose this location because of it's seclusion and it is just that. Peaceful and quite. Good location to start your explorations of history or just do nothing.
I read reviews two weeks before our arrival and discovered that there was an issue with stink bugs. I spoke with Gladys, the property manager, about the issue and she stated the problem had been addressed.
The cabin is exactly as described, no surprises upon arrival, however their was/is still a problem with the stink bugs.
We got a call from Gladys on Monday to check on how we were doing and I advised her of the problem. She stated that they would be out the next day to "address the issue".
They came out but the problem did not go away.
On the outdoor hot tube there is no arm to raise and move the cover. It takes two pretty healthy folks to move it off and set it on the picnic table.
The driveway needs a little work, it is dirt/gravel, on a steep grade, however I realize that they had had snow, ice and rain a couple of weeks prior to our arrival.
Other than these inconveniences I would recommend this cabin, I would just pick a time of year that the stink bugs want to stay outside.
We did enjoy our stay.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed the cabin. I was so glad we could arrange to reschedule your dates so you didn't lose any money. I do have a lift bar for the hot tub but am awaiting the service provide to schedule a time to place it on for me. Yes, the road has taken a beating from the snow and ice but I was able to make sure every guest made it safely to the cabin. Yes, I did say I am addressing the stink bugs but not that I have been able to eradicate them. I simply address the issue by removing them from the house in between month pest control. It seems like most cabin owners in this area are heavily affected by them. We are still working with pest control and normally they are gone by this season but it seems our whole eco-system is out of whack. The cabin is well appointed and we are glad you found it clean and well stocked. Thanks, Gladys

We had the most relaxing weekend here! The location was serene, the cabin was incredibly clean and you just can't beat the price. What you see is what you get here: a beautiful cabin in the country. I booked this for my girlfriend as a Christmas present and will definitely be back in the future.
I read some of the negative reviews for this after we arrived home and I must say that they could not be further from the truth. The owner could not have been more helpful when we had to reschedule our stay, and I was impressed with how tidy and well maintained the place was. To knock this rental because of uncontrollable things such as stink bugs, gnats and snow is completely silly. Stay in a hotel if bugs and weather bother you.
If you are thinking of renting this place, I couldn't recommend it more. You will not be disappointed.

Yes, this is the country and you may experience bugs, weather conditions, etc. We are working very hard to eradicate the stink bug issue but it appears that they are throughout the Page County area. This is why I allow on line reviews so that guest will fully understand our area. If you notice a lot of local rentals do not allow on line reviews. We loved every minute of our stay. The cabin is clean, spacious, and have a great feel to it. It is a 100% wood. The kitchen and bathroom are huge and well equipped. We had an amazing time!

Fantastic weekend, fantastic house

We had a fantastic weekend in the cabin. The house was clean, and the hottub was already warm when we got there. What a treat! There was great local hiking, and we very much enjoyed the fire pit. In reference to the other reviews, we came across about 4 stinkbugs the entire weekend and they were easy to get rid of---certaintly not a major nuisance. Gladys was very helpful prior to our visit and easy to get ahold of. All in all, we have no complaints and hope to return again!

Booking the cabin was super easy and Gladys was great to work with and talk too. We checked in and fell in love with the place!!!!! The hot tub was perfect, the jetted tub was great for a double bubble bath, and the dual shower was amazing. We loved everything about the place even the kitcen was wonderful to cook in!!! It was cold so we didn't get to experience the outside as much but we loved hanging out in the cabin watching movies, playing games, cooking and eating. We will definately come back again soon :) Thanks for the wonderful stay!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :)

One of the most relaxing and beautiful getaways in Virginia. The cabin was clean, well stocked with everything you could need, and the hot tub was just what I needed! My only regret is that I didn't stay longer :) The location and grounds are perfect for a little family vacation or a friends weekend. You feel so secluded up on the hill. Will definitely be back!

We stayed for 5 nights. Upon arrival we were amazed as the pictures online do not do justice. It was so much bigger than it looks online. One of the first things I read was the guest comment book and paid special attention to the page dedicated just to stink bugs and lady bugs. This would be my only complaint. Everything else was clean, very roomy,hottub was amazing,we used it every night but one. Has everything you need and then some. We were even wanting to stay another night but could not cause it was already booked. Boy am I glad! I tried to stay the extra night before our 3rd night. On nights one and two, I noticed a stink bug here and there. They were crawling in the living room floor,furniture and tables. On our third night the stink bugs were so bad we actually took a video of them swarming around the dining room table light. No joke. I'm talking about 20-30 flying around just in the dining room. Seems they are attracted to light. We couldn't even eat there because they were flying into our head and landing in our food. I didn't bother calling because I had already read there's nothing really they can do. I don't expect someone to come just to sweep them up, I can do that. They apparently know about it already. Gladys was very nice and easy to get in contact with if I needed. I would stay here again if it weren't for those darned stink bugs. I know they are harmelss but so are roaches. It's just gross. I guess we won't be staying in a cabin on the east coast ever again in the winter. Never knew about the issue they have there with stink bugs. I'm still giving this place a good because they were only unbearable the one night. The other nights they were there, but it's a cabin, in the woods. I'd expect a few bugs. Other than that, I would give this place an 5. Location is also great. Only suggestion is if it's a known issue and you give no refunds, it should be brought up before booking. There is no way a person who has issues with bugs could stay here. I think we also would have left if they were the same the last 3 nights.....I hope they can find away to fix the bug issue. Cabin is actually the best we have ever stayed in besides the stink bugs.

I have been been working closely with my pest control provider to get rid of them and the issue is improving actually. I'm not sure why they are such an issue as they should be laying dormant during this season. They usually never bother us until the fall but it may be due to our milder temperature during the last 2 winters. I would love to have the opportunity to host you again during summer months when they travel outside. Please feel free to call me personal to discuss a possible return to Hilltop Log Cabin. I was so pleased that you found the cabin to be the best as far as vacation rentals in this area. I do take a lot of pride in managing this cabin and I want to assure you that I am doing everything with in my power to eradicate the stink bugs. Just wanted to send a quick note letting you know what a great time we had at the Hill Top cabin this past weekend. We were planning on writing in the guest book but when we saw it starting to snow Sunday morning we decided to get out of dodge to avoid any road issues. The cabin was absolutely perfect and provided such a great place to unwind and simply relax away from civilization. We will surely be returning, hopefully sooner rather than later. Thanks again and hopefully I will be in contact again soon about another stay.

Nice cabin – but be aware of stink bugs!

We stayed in the cabin right after Christmas for one week. Although we have booked this cabin more than a half year in advance and have arrived in the evening the driveway was not cleared of snow and ice. It was absolutely impossible to climb the hill with our AWD-SUV. So we had to carry all our baggage by feet to the house – not really amazing.
Inside we unfortunately found that the cabin was not very clean. It took us more than an hour to vacuum the house and remove the obvious dirt.
But it became worse: this cabin is full of stink bugs! First we thought there are only a few dead and alive ones and that it won´t bother us. But it was really a big problem. We collected and removed them outside or vacuumed them - but without real success. They were everywhere, flying around, crawling in the rooms (even in the kitchen) and hit our kids heads – our kids got frightened after a while. In the middle of our stay there was a visit of a pest control company and they sprayed something outside the house. But it didn´t help. We counted the caught bugs that day and the next days: between 56 and 135 – per day!! Really nasty and horrible!
The manager was very friendly and helpful before our arrival and in the beginning. But offering collecting the bugs does not tackle the root of the problem. And what should we have done? Calling the manager every hour in the middle of the night and asking for collecting the next 10 – 20 bugs?
We never have had this kind of problems neither in North America nor in Europe. If there are problems with bugs in an area however the renters normally do not notice it.
The location of the house however is great. Kids have enough room to play inside and outside the cabin and could enjoy their stay.
Probably we should have left the cabin after some days and searched a new one. But it was New Year´s Eve and we had awaited this vacation (and the cabin/location) eagerly. Very sad!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to leave your comments. Yes, I will agree with most of this review when it comes to the stink bugs. It had been very warm before the storm and once the cold hit they traveled inside. When you checked in that night the storm had just ended and true we had not touched the driveway as we truly did not get much accumulation of snow and it was mostly ice. We can not remove ice when the temps are below freezing. It's not like snow and you can't push it. You were made aware that it is a gravel drive and you needed to rent a 4 wheeled vehicle and be prepared to drive on bad roads. We did go down the next day and scrap the drive down to the red clay mud. I'm not sure why you had so much trouble even before the hill was scraped because we came up and down the driveway multiple times before it was scraped and we had no issues driving. However, I realize everyone drives differently. Yes, I did have my pest control company make a special visit to blast the whole outside of the cabin. Regretfully they can not spray the inside when guest are at the cabin. I always try to be helpful but it's hard when I can not control nature. I pay hundreds of dollars per year on pest control and paid hundreds just in that 1 trip during your stay because I wanted you to be comfortable. Regretfully you never would call me(only email) and you would not answer when I called so it was hard to know if you were ok or not. The last time you contacted was New Years Eve regarding the stink bugs (which was 2 days after they sprayed) and honestly I can't get a company to come out on a holiday and they couldn't spray inside anyway. I was honest and I did offer to move you for your last couple of days. However, I never heard back from you so I assumed it wasn't that bad of an issue. As I told you I was not trying to be rude but I simply was out of options. I'm sorry you feel that way but I can not work miracles. I tried very hard to make you happy but due too the lack of contact with you that was very hard. If you were so unhappy I do wished you would have taken my offer as that was the one thing I could have done to help you. Our cabin is very clean, well appointed, and reasonable priced as you can see from most all of the other reviews. It really upsets me when a guest is so unhappy that you offer to relocate them but they stay and slam you with a bad review. I've been in this business for 6 years now. Trust me if it was so bad you would have left within the first 2 nights
