Sounds and looks friendly but owner prickly/cold

I did stay at this home but listed a different date as I wish to stay anonymous
Pros: Nice setting, great view, quiet. Lobster meal was nice. Easy to get the rental agreement.
Cons: It is an unfriendly experience to rent this home. The owner is prickly, and she lives nearby door. When renting a vacation home, one is looking forward to a vacation and relaxing. The view is enough to ignore short-comings of the small house: that the basement room is dingy, the house is fairly worn and shortcuts taken (put the old couches they don't want anymore in the house, use plastic railings on the porch), the downstairs entry has a funny smell, and the bed pillows are hard. With a view like that, the owners foolishly cut corners and placed tiny windows so you can't see the ocean from the beds. Going downstairs for the bathroom is a bit of an inconvenience. Our family was excited about visiting due to the woodstove in the photo, the bikes and kayaks that had originally been available. Disappointingly, Joi decided that all of the above, stove, bike, kayaks were all "withdrawn" and gave an insurance/liability excuse - pointing out that we could go rent any of the above, with no regard for the inconvenience of having to somehow strap kayaks and bikes to the car and transport back and forth to the rental house. She didn't care. A person who enjoys people would have found a different insurance solution that doesn't shut off a woodstove (in Maine), take away bikes and kayaks (Many other homeaway homes provide these). Or, at the minimum, show some empathy, "I'm so sorry that we had to remove the kayaks - it is a huge inconvenience." This house had the potential to be a place that I rented many, many times but, due to the inhospitable nature of the owner, it has left a sour taste in my mouth. It is only a back-up rental that I will use if all other options are already rented. If all you want is a lower-end house with a great view, a contract and to send the money and get a lobster dinner, you will be okay. However, be aware that the thing you are most looking forward to, Joi , might change or remove without any notice or apology. Perhaps it is annoying for her to have to deal with renters but she doesn't want to hire it out. I don't want to feel depressed during a vacation planning.
Owner's Response: Dear Dr. Laura,
My husband and I are quite honestly two of the nicest people who you will ever meet. We bend over backward to accommodate our guests and try to make everyone feel happy and at home. Our house has always gotten rave reviews and people regularly tell us that it's much larger and nicer than the photos make it appear. In the five years that I have been renting Tide’s Edge, I have never had one complaint, only compliments.
I have been very patient with you and have tried my best to meet your demands. We never advertised that the house would have a working woodstove or bikes, yet you felt that you were entitled to use both. Lee graciously offered to find you a rental company for the bikes, which you then later declined to use. With regard to the kayaks, we did offer them last year, but after having you at our home for a week, decided that it would be safest not to offer them again.
What amazes me is that, despite all of your complaints about our house, you tried repeatedly to book several weeks both last year and this year! When you didn't get the second week that you wanted to rent last summer, you actually asked me to contact the other guest and cancel her contract (which of course I wouldn't do). When you didn't get the week that you wanted this summer, you questioned me and insinuated that I had blocked it off so that you couldn't have it. You finally decided to rent two weeks in August and asked me for a discount, which I couldn’t do because it was peak season. You asked me to email you a rental agreement, which I did. When I didn't hear back, I emailed you and was told that you had changed your mind and didn't want to rent after all and then we got this complaint. I honestly feel that this complaint was your way of trying to blackmail me into giving you a discount.
We honestly love having people stay at Tide's Edge and have met some of the most wonderful people over the years. Many of our guests return year after year. Fortunately for us, you will not be one of them!
Joi and Lee
