Photos and Description of the Ojochal vacation villa rental
House, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Create a vacation memory that you will dream about for years to come.

This beautifully designed 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath home focuses on style and comfort not that you'll notice with a totally unobstructied view of the Pacific Ocean. A huge pool deck and stunning landscaping means you don't have to leave the house to enjoy the water. But, that would be a shame. Within minutes you could be on Ventanas, Pinuela, Tortuga, or Uvita beaches.

Enjoy a meal at home or visit one of Ojochal's famous restaurants.

Why Pick Casa Pajaro?

At 900 feet above sea level, Casa Pajaro offers totally unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean featuring unparalleled sunsets. See the huge sandbar called the Whales Tale that is Playa Uvita from the terrace. Further up the coast provides views of Punta Dominical and on clear days Manuel Antonio.

Our villa has all of the design and style of a resort while maintaining the feel of a family home. The pool deck is beautifully landscaped with palm trees and tropical plants. There are three bedrooms, all with queen size beds, a loft bedroom with queen size futon, two and a half bathrooms, two seating areas, an over sized outdoor terrace and a completely modern kitchen complete with granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances and a separate prep area.

Safety and ease of access is a primary concern for home renters. Our house has a security gate with an intercom and lights at street level. A paved driveway makes the ascent easy. There is parking for three vehicles.

About Casa Pajaro -

Newly built in late 2007. Nestled on top of a hill, the tree lined backyard is home to countless birds, butterflies, sloth's and the occasional troop of Howler and White Faced Capuchin Monkeys.

The master bedroom has a magnificent view that makes getting out of bed hard to do. The over sized en-suite has a large shower with a rain shower head. Dual sinks give extra room and the closets allow for ample storage of personal items.

The main living room cupola has a beautifully illuminated 30 foot ceiling. A second outdoor seating area has a comfy couch and chair if you prefer some quiet time to read.

South and Central American art decorates the house with a primitive style featuring Boruca masks, Ecuadorian weavings, and Nicaraguan oil paintings combine with wooden geckos to bring surprise and delight.

Natural airflow allows for a beautiful breeze off the ocean during the day and the cooling air from the mountains at night. No air conditioning is needed but ample ceiling fans are outfitted in every room. The breezes are often so strong that candles will not stay lit on the covered terrace.

The pool is surrounded by tropical plants, palm trees and lounge chairs. It is a great place to sit out to watch the sun set over the Pacific or catch some sunshine. There is an outdoor shower with lots of privacy.

To quote our past guest, Karl E., ' The outdoor dining area was remarkable. The patio and pool area was very nice and exceeded our expectations. The property was well maintained and the listing description was accurate. We found that the home and the views were even nicer than that reflected in the listing photos.'

Why pick the Ojochal area?

The Southern Pacific zone is often referred to as the 'Big Sur' of Costa Rica, with a coastal range featuring some of the most beautiful, virgin rain forests in the country. It is an enchanting oasis with beautiful beaches literally one after another. Playa Dominical, Playa Hermosa, Playa Uvita, Ballena National Marino Park, Playa Pinuela, and Playa Ventana. Each one is unique. For example, Ventana has sea caves that are passable at low tide.

The Ojochal / Ventanas area is 30 minutes south of Dominical. It is a three hour drive from San Jose International Airport and just 30 minutes north of the local airport of Palmar Sur (PMZ) . Quepos / Manuel Antonio is about one hour north of Casa Pajaro. Ojochal has many great restaurants and bars, lovely grocery stores in Uvita, wine store, and surf board rentals. The real reason to come to this part of Costa Rica though is to enjoy unspoiled beaches, nature at it's most pristine, and to kick back and disconnect.

The Tico Times, the weekly English language newspaper called the Southern Zone the last frontier. While that is true, you don’t have to give up the comforts of a resort just to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. A stay at Casa Pajaro gives you best of all worlds.

About the Southern Zone and Osa peninsula -

Welcome to the “The Most Biologically Intense Place on Earth” as deemed by National Geographic: the crème de la crème, the crown jewel, and the hidden treasure of Costa Rica, The Osa’s isolated location allows you to experience the protected rain forests of Corcovado National Park, immaculate beaches, and the mind-boggling scuba and snorkeling sanctuaries. It is home to 13 major ecosystems, 400 species of birds, 140 mammals, 116 amphibians and reptiles and 6,000 insects. Although much of Costa Rica is developed, you have reached the unspoiled Costa Rica of old.

About Ross Baldwin

Jan and Ross moved to Ojochal from Canada in June of 2009. Married for fourteen years, they both are on a sabbatical from corporate life to experience a different life. As active members of the local community, they volunteer at the local school, environmental and community groups.

Casa Pajaro is the culmination of years of dreaming and planning. We share our home with others so more people can experience our paradise.

Ross Baldwin purchased this villa in 2007
Why Ross Baldwin chose Ojochal

The southern Pacific coast is such a unique area of the world. Environmentalist have put this area in the top 20 in the world that should be protected. The jungle is amazing and sightings of both white face capuchin and howler monkeys are common. Not a day passes without hearing the trill of the toucan or squawk of the green parrots. This place is magical and our house is in the middle of it all. To quote a past guest, Marlee Williams, 'The landscaping at this home is gorgeous. We saw more birds at the house than we ever saw on any tour. You almost don't want to leave the house it is so beautiful and comfortable, but you force yourself to get out and see some sights.'

What makes this villa unique

Everyday will present a new sunset or unique mountain lighting. The air currents from the ocean or mountain keep it nicely cooled. In the evenings candles won't stay lit on the terrace because of the breezes. While secluded, there are three other houses in the immediate area although only one can be seen below.

This is the perfect house for a lazy photographer. Birds, butterflies and monkeys are seen regularly from the terrace or pool deck. You don't have to hike to see a toucan. Simply top up your morning coffee, get your camera ready and shoot a few frames. Blue morphos waft by in the morning and hummingbirds are attracted by the bushes and flowers.

The neighborhood pizote makes appearances through the day and the monkeys call every morning and afternoon.

This is a magical place.

A Week In Paradise!

Submitted: April 22, 2013 Stayed: April 2013
My husband and I and our two children (ages 8 and 5) recently stayed at this property for a week. It was absolutely paradise. The views are breathtaking. The Pacific Ocean greets you every morning, as you sit enveloped in the jungle and mountains that gracefully wrap around you. It sounds a little poetic, but the experieince is just that....poetic! The rooms are large and well spaced throughout the house, so you never feel crowded. High ceilings and large bathroom areas make it feel open and airy. My kids loved the pool and I loved the piece of mind that there was an electronic gate to tuck us in safe at night (although, I should say that I never really worried about my safety and the locals were very warm and welcoming). The house is ideally located as well. Close to beach, and Dominical and Ojochal, which both had excellent places to eat. I would highly recommend the house and look forward to our next trip back. Pura Vida!

Not exactly as advertised.

We stayed for 3 nights starting March 2nd. Let me first say the view is beautiful. The home is nice although does show a little wear and tear. Our main issue was the heat and lack of ocean breezes as advertized. The temperatures for our week were in the 90's and the home never did cool off. We went to sleep at about 86 degrees and by morning it was down to about 75. Being from Atlanta we are used to the heat but this was extreme. We checked out 2 nights early but the owner refused to refund our money even though he advertised these constant cooling breezes. I would suggest looking for another house to rent given this could be an issue not knowing what the weather will be like and not having AC.
Owner's Response: We strive to provide the highest quality of service to our guests from our initial contact to their stay at our home. We understand that a vacation can be expensive and is often an adventure that has been planned well in advance and is full of anticipation.
I will not judge the comfort of other people. Many guests will attest to the wonderful breezes at our home but we cannot control the weather, be it sun, rain or wind. What we do control is a ceiling fan in every room and floor fans to be used as each guest chooses.
It is unfortunate that these guests may have not been honest about their intentions to stay for the 5 days of their reservation. During our dealings with these guests, the following incidents occurred:

1. Upon arrival at our home, they informed our property managers that they had already paid the security deposit of $300 when they paid the rental fee. This was not true. And as proof, they have not requested a refund of the security deposit which they claim to have paid
2. When they decided to leave our home 2 days early, they informed our property manager that they would be leaving in an hour. When he returned within 30 minutes to conduct his walk through inspection with them, they had already departed.
3. Our rental agreement states that there is a 4 day minimum and no refunds for early departures. They were in receipt of the agreement before they paid the rental fee and thus implicitly agreed to the terms.
When people rent homes in foreign destinations there needs to be trust on both sides. We are very serious about keeping our promises and we ask that our guests do the same.

Ross and Jan's house in Ojochal is an absolutely wonderful spot for a family vacation. We had my husband's 30th birthday party there and were very pleased. The pictures online don't really do the property justice, as is the case with most pictures. The views are amazing, watching the sun set over the pacific every evening was my favorite. You can see the whale's tale and the little islands off the coast as well as the headlights from Hwy 1. The house is only a few years old and has been well taken care of. The pool was fantastic but remember to bring some floaties because trying to purchase them in Costa Rica is a little spendy if you can find them at all! The property manager was very nice and we only saw him once at the house to clean the pool. I would recommend this house to anyone who is looking to get away to paradise for a while. Ojochal is a wonderful little place with lots of great restaurants and friendly people. We went on a fishing trip and stocked up on Mackrel for our stay. The howler monkeys would come by the house on occasion and scare the bejesus out of you! There were toucans in the trees and at night the bugs come out! You will see a million different kinds and shapes and sizes of bugs. I had a wonderful time and will come back to Ojochal again for sure. Thanks again Ross and Jan for opening your home to us!

Great place - we stayed with some friends that we brought to Costa Rica for their first visit, and it was a great place for the family. There was one thing that I was looking for, but didn't find... a safe to lock up our passports and extra cash and such. We've been to C.R. 3 times and I can only think of one other place we stayed that didn't have one - a small rental room on the back of a guy's house in Fortuna. We looked around for a while and found a place we could use instead... the pool pump room. If you come to Casa Pajaro, you will have keys to the pool pump room which has a steel door & dead-bolt. We put our stuff in a basket on a shelf in there... not as convenient as a safe in the house, but it worked fine.
I have to say, I have never seen more Toucans in all of my trips to rainforest areas combined. There was a pair that visited everyday and hung out in a tree on the adjacent property. They flew by several times each morning, and we also saw a few others throughout the week.
Really good access, too. We could make it all the way to the house almost everytime without using 4-wheel drive. (but it would be good to have it)

Owner's Response: We appreciate your feedback and you make a very good point about security. Locking all doors and windows and closing the gate when leaving the house is a big deterrent. I am glad that the toucans put on a show for you. The capuchin and howler monkeys also come by but do not stay as long. Thanks for your review.

Stunning Views

Submitted: July 19, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
The views at Casa Parajo are stunning -- jungle to your left, oceanview in front including view of Whale's Tail at Marino Ballena National Park and mountains to your right. As you sit on the expansive terrace in your rocking chair, you can watch and listen to toucans and parrots filling the trees in the early morning and again in the late afternoon. While floating in the pool, you can see hummingbirds darting between flowers along with butterflies while listening to Howler monkeys in the background. The landscaping at this home is gorgeous. We saw more birds at the house than we ever saw on any tour. Dine al fresco with candelight while you listen to insects and frogs and watch lightning bugs. You almost don't want to leave the house it is so beautiful and comfortable, but you force yourself to get out and see some sights. There are several restaurants in Ojochal and we made reservations at Citrus for a birthday dinner. Playa Ventanas is a lovely beach close to the house with caves. We also visited the waterfall in Uvita which is close by and swam in the waterfall pools there for a nominal fee. Dominical is about 28 km away with a beach, restaurants and shopping. You can book tours such as white water rafting across from the Catholic Church at Dominical Surf Adventures. Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park are about an hour away. We took an excursion to Corcovado National Park via Sierpe which is about an hour away going the opposite direction of Quepos. We rented a Daihatsu Bego, but you really need a 4 X 4 with more power to make it up some of the mountain roads, especially during a rain storm. We followed tripadvisor.com and removed all of our belongings from the rental car on outings and had no incidents. We highly recommend arriving at the house before dark. We arrived during a rain storm at night which made it difficult to see. The owner is helpful and accommodating. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: We are always pleased when our guests find the views as beautiful as we do. The serenity presented by the mountains and ocean are truly memorable. But, the area offers many interesting sites, so you do need to push yourself to get out and explore...or not !

Perfect Honeymoon Getaway

5 of 5
Submitted: June 12, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
We just returned from a wonderful honeymoon stay at Casa Pajaro! We were met the first day by Ross, who walked us through the place, gave us some great tips on places to go, places to eat, etc, etc. You'll find yourself wanting to just sit back on their rocking chairs and stare at the ocean all day. Before you know it, it will be time to go to bed. One of the best things we did was go to a local fruit market 30 minutes south in Palmar Norte for fresh fruit and veggies. The first house on the road to Playa Tortuga sells fresh fish each day. We ended up cooking at the house 6 out of our 7 night stay!!! One tip, we did have an unfortunate incident with car thieves in Playa Uvita. Make sure to not keep any valuables in your car at the beaches, at all. Luckily that's what we did and it didn't effect our trip in the least.

Owner's Response: Thank you for choosing Casa Pajaro for this very special occasion. We are very glad you had a wonderful time at the house.
This is also a great remind to all travelers to Costa Rica and we follow the same precaution. Rental cars are a target for petty thievery at the beaches and in store parking lots.
We expect a revisit on your 25th! Congratulations and best of luck!

Perfect base camp for exploring Uvita area

5 of 5
Submitted: April 5, 2012 Stayed: January 2012
We "camped out" at Casa Pajaro early January. Never before had we been to Costa Rica or rented a house for that matter. After a super long day and some trouble finding the house we arrived late. Jan and Ross were there "waiting" for us. They immediatly made us feel at home and showed us our new castle which would be ours for 2 amazing weeks. The house was exactly as described, clean and very well stocked with the basics. The flora and fauna was amazing, birds , butterflies, plants, howler monkeys, and oh ya. the resident sloth. Ross was a wealth of information and gave us some great tips. I will say that you must have a vehicle unless you plan on "holing up" for the length of your stay, which in my opinion would be a huge mistake. With so much to see and do, be it horseback trips to Naucaya water falls, day trips to Manuel Antonio or Palmur Sur, or any number of sightseeing opportunities.I will admit that the few days we did "chill", you couldn't find a better place to relax than the bird house. Don't miss Boca Coronado, just 15 minutes (driving) away. Great food and reasonable prices. I would definetely recommend Casa Pajaro to my closest friends and family and will return if able.
In fact, I hope to one day return to Costa Rica on a more permanent basis. Maybe, become Jan and Ross's neighbor and stroll up the drive for a Pilsen
Cheers

Great place to stay in Ojochal

Submitted: September 25, 2011 Stayed: July 2011
We arrived at Casa Parajo on Monday evening after a long day of air and car travel. The house is tucked into a jungle hillside about 10 minutes off the highway. The road is well maintained and though we had 4 wheel drive, I only used it when going up the driveway. The homeowners "Jan and Ross" were their to greet us after a tough night drive thru a mean rainy season storm. Night driving not recommended if you get in late to San Jose or Liberia. Drive it the next day.

Jan and Ross were very easy to work with, walked us thru the home and pointed out the details one needs before setting up a base camp in a new house for 9 days. Casa Pajaro is spacious, comfortable and modern. Great views from the pool, pool deck and huge deck off the kitchen. We camped on that deck every morning with coffee and every evening with a drink. The Kitchen had everything one needs and their are plenty of stores nearby to stock up with food if one wants to cook. We used the BBQ a couple times. 6 Adults fit comfortably into all rooms, we didn't really use the loft or back entertainment room as the deck kept us occupied.

Every morning you wake up to Parrots and Toucans in the nearby trees. Howler monkees, Lizards, Frogs, Toads, Insects and much more were daily visitors. Though we were there in rainy season, the sun was abundant. The house is well situated to get to Sierpe, Drakes Bay, Cano Island, Dominical, Uvita and all points in between. We visited 3 different waterfalls, including the one in the town of Ojochal along with Nauyaca falls on horseback. Drove down to Sierpe and did a couple adventures out of that city. Visited the nearby beaches, surfed Playa Hermosa and visited Cano islands. The place was peaceful and its proximity to everything made the whole trip worthwhile.

I would definitely recommend Casa Pajaro for families, adults and adventurers looking for great hosts, peaceful surroundings in a jungle environment and great views that stay in your head after you leave.

My family and I recently stayed at Casa Pajaro during a visit to the Ojochal area. What an outstanding home. The quality of the ocean and mountain views exeeded any view we have ever had on any vacation. Toucans and parrots are common visitors. Howler monkeys can be heard on a regular basis in the nearby trees. The outdoor dining area was remarkable. The patio and pool area was very nice and exceeded our expectations. The property was well maintained and the listing description was accurate. We found that the home and the views were even nicer than that reflected in the listing photos. The owner is available at check in to explain everything about the home and also answer any questions you may have about the area. The home is in a very safe community and also has a security gate. This is a great rental home for a just a couple on a get away or even a larger family. Jan and Ross are great people and will help in any way possible. We can't wait to go back!

Amazing views, serene surroundings, gracious house

Our family spend a week at this lovely house during our Costa Rican adventure and would highly recommend the house and the general area. There was lots to do - horseback riding, river eco-tour, zip-lining, diving, snorkeling, and of course beaches, beaches and more beaches. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and the master suite is luxurious. The kitchen is out of a magazine and well-equipped. We spent most of our house time on the covered deck, reading and enjoying the view - as well as al fresco dining. The kids loved the pool and searching for frogs and birds on the property. The challenge was the 4x4 drive in/out (<10 minutes) but the views, house and location made up for the bone-rattling. We especially appreciated the hospitality of the owners. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to anyone looking for a peaceful, beautiful place to relax, with access to exciting local activities and yummy dining nearby.
