Photos and Description of the Highlands vacation house rental
House - 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s) - 2 Baths - (Sleeps 8-12)

Have a real mountain experience at the newly renovated mountain home on 5+ acres (elevation 3500+). Situated on the actual state line between Georgia and North Carolina (the creek is the state line) and 12 minutes from Highlands, you'll have all the space and privacy you could want.

All furnishings are new, 2008 (except for the antiques, of course), as is most everything except the charm and character of the original house.

The pine paneling and oak floors in the living room give added warmth to the fireplace and those cool summer nights. Original artwork throughout by the artist/owner and local artists.

Leave your cares behind as you settle into a true rural mountain setting- if you don't want the country club or subdivision, the Artist's House is the real thing!

About Michael O'Donovan

Though born in North Carolina, I reside in Fl and try to spend as much time in these beautiful mountains as possible. I found the perfect location on 6 acres about two years ago and spent over a year completely renovating and updating the house. I am a photographer-publisher, and enjoy hiking, traveling, and of course, photography.

Michael O'Donovan purchased this house in 2007
Why Michael O'Donovan chose Highlands

It's simply beautiful and the town of Highlands is one of the most charming mountain towns I've found, with great resturants, art galleries and shopping.

My husband, our friends and their toddler thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Artist's house. The weekend we stayed was particularly chilly, but we were warm and cozy and enjoyed cooking our meals in the spacious kitchen each night. We were a short drive from Highlands (~15 min) and literally right down the road from some amazing hiking trails and waterfalls. This house truly felt welcoming and warm---a perfect place to just sit and relax and get away. The kitchen and bathrooms were very clean (a particular concern of mine when renting), and the beds were decent, although I might advise you to bring your own pillows.

Thanks so much to Michael for sharing his wonderful property! We would surely return again in the future!

My husband and I planned a last minute, all-children-left-behind, get away and settled on the Artist's House. The owner was very helpful and kind providing information on the cabin and surrounding area. We were interested in hiking and escaping city life, which was easy. The house has the charm of a log cabin but offers plenty of comfort. It was clean and well maintained, which is always a great joy (and surprise) to someone terribly allergic to mold and dust mite. The house is a little (15 min) ride from Highlands proper and a stone throw away from great hiking. At the end of the day a couple of really good restaurants in Highlands top it off, I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to unwind. We'll be back.

Our stay in the Artist's house was absolutely wonderful. What a beautifully renovated cabin!

My wife and I spent a weekend there for our "anniversary" vacation. I used quotations because we brought our two kids, and let each kid bring a friend, so it was two adults and four kids!!!!!! Right away, the kids were blown away with the property. They kept running around saying "Whoa, cool!" Then wanted to show us the neat stuff that they found.

We have stayed in cabins in Highlands before and it is one of our favorite spots to vacation when the leaves start to change colors in the fall. This house was great. The Bunk room was perfect for a family with kids. We could have probably slept 3-4 more people comfortably.

It was great having a full kitchen, as we do a lot of cooking. The fire pit out front was wonderful. We roasted marshmallows and hot dogs with the kids and told ghost stories as we watched all the stars come out. My wife and I enjoyed some gourmet nibblies and some fine wine that we had bought at the cool grocery store in town (love them too!)

Mike was very helpful in pointing out some fun things to do while we were in the area. It was also fun to see all of his photos in the house, as well as albums of the renovation and his family. We did a lot of hiking, I took the boys fishing while the girls went into town to shop the boutiques. The weather was perfect, and everybody had a fantastic time. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a cozy, rustic cabin retreat!

TOTAL FIASCO--STILL DEALING WITH IT!

Should have taken to heart the review that had the song of 'Deliverance' playing in their mind as they approached this cabin. This is a very remote and rustic cabin. We arrived to a DIRTY AND UNCLEANED PLACE WHICH WAS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! We had to sweep, vacuum and wash all the sheets the night we arrived before we could go to bed after driving across the country. We had to haul off several bags of dirty diaper containing garbage--yes the smell! This was after it took contacting VRBO in order to get a hold of the owner just to get check in instructions. The pictures are a bit deceiving as the surrounding property has not been mowed for years. The living area was nice, the bedrooms adequate and the kitchen ok. But the cabinets were old, filled with lingering staples and dirty. We had to deal with some invading ants as well. There was a tiny stackable washer / dryer in a filthy closet of a bedroom that was from the 1970s and just barely worked. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO GET THE OWNER TO REFUND OUR SECURITY DEPOSIT AND CLEANING FEE 7 WEEKS LATER---HE'S AVOIDING US! NOT A HAPPY TRAVELER Will try to get VRBO to pull this listing!
Owner's Response: The guest was made aware that the maid had been very ill and could not clean and they had the option to cancel for a full refund. They agreed to clean with a $100 credit by me which they chose. They chose to stay and remarked to me " the cleaning wasn't a big deal". The ad clearly states its rural and not a country club setting, though there are three good neighbors on my street. Their funds were sent to them in a timely manner, the letter was returned to me as undeliverable and am am still awaiting an email for their correct address. Again, they had other options to stay and they chose to spend the week there, as they found it knowing the maid couldn't be there, but accepted a $100 payment from me. Out of the dozens of rentals this is the first time the maids didn't come on time.

What a fabulous place to find peace, inspiration and beautifully majestic surroundings! We spent two weeks here as a health and wellness retreat. There was plenty of room to roll out several yoga mats, a well stocked kitchen to prepare nutritious and delicious meals, easy access to hiking in the cool mountain air and comfortable beds to rest and restore. My dogs LOVED the wide open fields to run, sniff and hunt for critters! The owner was accommodating and gracious with our schedule, and even suggested yoga classes and healthy dining suggestion! We will definitely be back!

When we drove up to the house, the song from Deliverance came to mind. The street looked like it was transplanted from the back woods of West Virginia. The house did not live up to its description. Clean, but plain. The furnishings were sparse and fairly uncomfortable. The beds were hard and the sheets were scratchy. Luckily I brought my own. Not worth the money, just awful.
Owner's Response: Sorry my "sparse" house was not up to your standards- it was advertised as not for the country club or subdivision type- if you check the other reviews I think you will find that the house represented to them a comfortable home at a very reasonable price. It does not have 400 count expensive sheets but as you said, was clean and it offers a true mountain experience that is not for everyone. It sounds as if you would have been more contented with the homes that rent in the $1500-$2000 range, not $875- I've been told many a time that my guests felt they got more than they paid for or expected- I apologize if it did not met your expectations.

The PERFECT highlands cabin retreat

Anyone looking for a secluded cabin in the Highlands would love this place. It is off the beaten path, yet 10 minutes from town. Our group of 4 was incredibly comfortable here and had a blast cooking all of our own meals in the well stocked kitchen. The setting was just what we were looking for and we were intrigued by the history of the house and surrounding land. The owner did a great job creating a warm atmosphere even decorating every wall with his own artwork and photography. The owner himself also helped make the weekend a great experience. He was very pleasant, accommodating, and willing to help make the rental easy and suited to our taste. You will not be disappointed choosing to stay here!!

Owner's Response: I was glad to be in the area and to meet Kevin and his party- couldn't have asked for better guests as they truly seemed to appreciate the uniqueness of the house and the setting.

There were 8 of us on a long weekend vacation to celebrate my mom's "special" birthday year. The age ranges were 11 years old to 61. We had the best time. The house is very close to so many things for all ages to enjoy. We hiked, viewed waterfalls, jumped off a cliff into the water, and went tubing down Scaley Mountain, to name a few. We also enjoyed shopping and a few meals in town. (the quaint town of Highlands) The house itself offers a very peaceful, relaxing, homey feel. We definately enjoyed and appreciated the home and would highly recommend it to anyone. The home itself truly does make you feel at "home" while on vacation in the gorgeous mountains. Thank you!!!

The owner is very helpful with every detail and the property is very well maintained. It's location couldn't be better, you are just a short drive from town (which I might add is a beautiful drive) with just enough distance to feel a peacefulness and relaxation that is hard to describe. The house is very nice and clean and has a lot of ammenities to offer people of all ages. My family hiked to some breathtaking waterfalls and scenery that words just can't describe. We all thoroughly enjoyed this vacation and property and look forward to returning again soon for some relaxing on the front porch, listening to the birds singing and definitely enjoying the wonderful peace there.Highly recommend this property for everyone!!!
