Photos and Description of the York Harbor vacation barn rental
2 bedrooms, loft, 1 bath, large deck, sleeps 5

Private and quiet country location - The Joshua Lassell Barn - walk to harbor, beaches, nature preserve, village. Located on the grounds of the ancient 1716 Joshua Lassell House in the Old Seabury area. No other houses are in sight - you may hear the horses whinny to themselves. York River is right out back. Portsmouth, NH - historic hip music, foodie and theatre mecca - is a 10 minute drive. Ogunquit art colony just up the Shore Road. Boston and Portland are both 50 minutes away by major highway. Kennebunkport 25 minutes. Bike and canoe for your use. Due to high deck and horses on property, no children between ages 3 - 10. Laundry, deck, charcoal grille, outside dining. Our neighbor is a lobsterman - ask us about lobsters fresh off the boat . Well-behaved pets welcome for $100 extra. We have 2 Schnauzers - Josh and June.

Spring and Fall - good Striper fishing. Fall is lovely for autumn colors, York Harvestfest, and peaceful days.

74 Seabury Road, 03909

About Brud Weger or Sonia Bishop

Sonia: I grew up in California, where I met Brud. He wanted to return to New England, an appealing idea, so here we are.

In winter we go into semi-hibernation mode, but spring, summer and fall are well worth it.

Brud Weger or Sonia Bishop purchased this barn in 1999
Why Brud Weger or Sonia Bishop chose York Harbor

An ancient timber - framed house, 4 fireplaces, enough property to have horses and privacy, the barn. And chipmunks - many chipmunks of different tribes - the barn group, the stonewallers, the house bunch, led by 'Superchip'.

We're going to give the place a 300th birthday party in 2016.

What makes this barn unique

Private and quiet, yet close to the beaches, ocean. Good walking in all directions. This area has a country feel, yet there are some really great restaurants, galleries, museums, theatre, music - Portsmouth, Boston, Portland close at hand. Several conservation areas and large parks.

We loved our week in York, especially this wonderful loft. We shared a week with our adult son and his girl friend. We had plenty of room, the kitchen was adequate for entertaining. We had two large groups of 9 for dinner with adequate seating. The lobsterman who lives in the neighborhood gave us such a great deal on lobster. The deck is spacious with a grill and view of the woods. The area has great restaurants, shopping, beaches, and great walking paths. The loft was clean, comfortable and bright with skylights that make it bright and cheerful. We are hoping to spend more time this fall. Sonia, Brud and Rocky are so welcoming, friendly and helpful.

This is the greatest place! The apartment is the upper story of a converted barn behind the main house. Tree top height views, very private, very quiet. The main bedroom has open beam ceiling and a fairy-tale feel. Bath is spacious with claw foot tub under a big skylight for star-gazing while soaking and reading. Big deck over the forest for entertaining, outside dining. Kitchen is ample and very useable. The apartment is such a pleasure to be in that even a rainy day is something to look forward to. Within easy picturesque walk of the York River where local fishermen angle for striper on the tide twice a day then across the bridge to John Hancock's colonial era warehouse on the river, thru the Steedman Woods Reserve, over the Wiggly Bridge on the millpond where children try to catch crabs on strings, then cross the pond and into the village for breakfast, or an afternoon drink, or swim and sun at small and cozy York Beach. Take a canoe up the York River in the morning and spend the day drifting back on the out-going tide. Great walks along the harbor shore. Further out, accessible by bus, is Long Sands, traditional boardwalk resort town. Going out the other direction from the house gets you to a great hike along Brave Boat Harbor, then down thru Kittery area and across the Piscataqua River to Portsmouth, for bars, restaurants, beautiful park, home of John Paul Jones, sight seeing, shops. Perfect starting point for sight seeing and exploring up or down the coast. We've stayed here many times, with kids and without, and hope to spend many more. If you are only going to have one New England experience, this will make a great memory.

I have stayed in the Barn Apartment for 2 summers in a row with my 2 children and husband. There is plenty of space for all 4 of us and even though it is literally 5 minutes from the attractions of York Harbor, Long Sands beach and Short sands activities, it feel extremly private. Brud and Sonia provide a comfortable atmosphere- actually, we didnt really even see them! Last summer we asked if we could bring our dog (she is very well behaved) and they accepted with us providing a reasonable deposit.
We plan on returning here yearly for as long as they will have us!
Thank You Brud and Sonia- we'll see you next year!

Above all else, the striper fishing will stick in my mind. Your accommodations are lovely and the adjacent seacoast was pure Maine. The bicycle was a welcome relief from the jogging routine.

Thank you for a lovely getaway.
