Basement Apartment
Review Submitted: October 13, 2009
Date of Stay: October 2009
First, the good: the host, who lives upstairs, is very nice, friendly, and helpful. The apartment was extremely clean and well stocked. Having the computer in the living room and access to 2 excellent bikes with locks sold us on the place.
The bad: from the photo you would think it was one of the two apartments shown in the photo. It is not. It is the basement apartment which you access to the right of the garage, under the stairs in the photo. Since the basement apartment is originally part of the apartment upstairs, there is no soundproofing and so it feels like what it is - you are staying in the basement and can hear the sounds of family life above - it does not feel private. After we stayed I read all the wonderful reviews on the website - I guess privacy and quietness do not matter to the people travelling with children, but it was a distraction for my husband and I. Although there are windows looking out at the sidewalk, I would not choose to stay in a basement apartment.
Owner's Response: I appreciate your honest opinion and am sincerely sorry you did not enjoy your stay.
Being a serious establishment recognized, accredited and inspected by Tourism Quebec, you must know that the apartment is and has always been a self-contained unit of its own, with its own unique mailing address and entrance.
As most buildings in Montreal made with wood and bricks, a small amount of sound is heard between apartments which is unavoidable, however substantially less than any condo/apartment building or hotel with many neighbors instead of just one.
The entrance door to the apartment is in fact to the right of the driveway at ground level (pictures available on our website). It has 3 large sized windows on the right side of the property allowing for much light to enter and no steps making it easier for people with limited mobility.
It’s easy accessibility makes it ideal for the serious cyclists who absolutely wishe to keep their personal bike in the entrance of the apartment (instead of the interior garage which is at their disposal), as well as for a family, someone with a wheelchair, a child’s stroller, or a senior’s walker. Some simply prefer it because they can unload their luggage and groceries from their car in the driveway directly into the apartment without climbing up a flight of stairs.
We hope you’ve enjoyed our personalized combination locks to both the entrance door and bicycle locks, the maps and tourism documentation with discount booklet, you personal phone line, the computer with high speed internet, the courtesy movies pop-corn and bicycles.
Should one day our upstairs apartment become available for short-term rental, perhaps it might be more suitable for your needs.
It was a pleasure to meet both you and your husband and wish you all the best
Sincerely,
Cynthia
