Hale Makana is located in a truly wonderful location, as good as any we have enjoyed in our travels. Bali Hi (forgive me for forgetting its proper name) is spectacular. Having only to turn our head in its direction to enjoy it was a special treat. I took hundreds of pictures of sunsets, morning light, afternoon waves, Queen's Bath--each a postcard and all from the property. Amazing.

The farmers market in Hanalei was definitely worth seeing. We were able to pick up lots of fresh ingredients for meals and to see foods and products that you can't find anywhere else.

Among our most memorable aspects of the trip were the surf lessons that each of us took through the instructors connected to the Quicksilver Surf shop. My wife, myself and my sons (ages seven and nine) made our first stand on the famed Hanalei Beach. The kids were very proud and did extremely well.

The property is extremely well maintained, impeccably clean and highly functional for a larger group. Having the pool to come home to and for the kids to enjoy, regardless of what the weather was doing, was hugely important.

Everything we could have wanted for the time in Kauai was found at the house, from every kitchen tool we might need to beach toys and chairs. We were struck by how well organized everything in the house was--every detail had been considered. Thanks Mary. I can tell that you put yourself into achieving the best possible care for this property and it's guests. We are grateful.

There's more that we would have liked to do, but a week can only fit so much into it. It broke our hearts to leave. We said goodbye at sunset down at the pier. Lots of locals were picknicking and taking in the spectacle of the see swallowing the sun. It was easily the most beautiful of the sunsets we saw and it honestly hurt to watch. We had to drive away.

The PERFECT location in soooo many ways: the house, lay-out, rooms, decorations, the pool, ocean views, activity below at Queen's Bath, tons of sunsets, garden, proximity to lots of sites & beaches, etc. I know for sure, the pool has never been used so much as during our stay at Hale Makana..!! The only drawback is that this pool is unheated and only went up in temperature to 86F (30C).... gosh darn...;) (kidding).... and no chickens on the lot!...haha... We did however, hear the bird chicks do their thing on the cliff below.... you know what I mean after visiting. A special word of appreciation and recognitions to all the attention paid to detail in/around the house to make us feel comfortable and taken care of, and make it all work! And to Mary, thanks for the welcome and intro at the beginning - all worked out perfect. We will tell our friends about Hale Makana and think about planning to return. The moment you arrive at this wonderful home greeted by Mary you know you are in a very special place. I will remember the sound of the ocean waves breaking on the rocks of Queens Bath below the home and sitting in the back yard and looking up at the Milky Way on a clear night. There are few views on this planet that compare with the sun setting into the Pacific over Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai. Mary does a wonderful job of helping you find your “equilibrium” and is always just a phone call away once your stay begins. We made the trip around the island to Waimea Canyon and Kalalau Lookout with a breathtaking view of the Na Pali Coast. Closer to the home is the wonderful Hanalei and one of the great driving roads in the world: down Kuhio Hwy to Ke’e Beach and Kalalau Trial. We honeymooned in Kauai in 1987 and returned to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary with our best man, his wife and our matron of honor and her husband. It was the perfect place and we agreed we can’t possible wait another 25 years to return. I highly recommend Mary and this wonderful home -- they are a great combination.

Hale Makana is a large and comfortable home in a gorgeous setting overlooking the ocean. You immediately feel at home when you realize that the house is equipped just as you would want it if you lived there full-time: spices and other condiments in the kitchen; water toys and snorkeling gear; plenty of towels; wash clothes at the door to wipe off sandy feet; books, DVDs and CDs; etc. The kids loved the pool and the adults spent time in the hot tub almost every evening. You can easily walk to Queen’s Bath, and the home is convenient to all the activities on the north shore. There are wonderful ocean and sunset views, and every day we were amazed as the local youth jumped and dove into the surging water in the small cove below the house. Mary, the agent for the owners, could not be more responsive and helpful. Hale Makana is the perfect place on the north shore to relax and enjoy the beauty of Kauai.

This is our FOURTH stay at Hale Makana and we have already booked for next year! Obviously we love it here! It is PARADISE!! Hale Makana is like home to us now. No restaurant can match the view, and as usual, we spent most nights eating fresh fish from Hanalei Dolphin cooked out on the grill to enjoy in the screened outside dining area. We enjoyed horseback riding at Princeville, the canyon, a catamaran trip up the Na Pali coast, kayaking in Hanalei Bay.... but every time we leave the house....the best part is returning! We also loved the new path along the coast in Kapaa – a great place to run, bike or just enjoy the view.

We saw whales again this year – even in May!! However, as always, our favorite are the sea turtles that I get to see everyday and to swim with one today right below the house was icing on the cake!

Loved the rental home. The unit was a superb location with views of Bali Hi
and Queens Bath, and the pool was fantastic. The customer service was great
and Mary went out of her way to ensure we had what we needed.

The best part of my trip was the hike up Napali Coast. Simply unforgettable.

Best Restaurant was Tahiti Nui - it was a really fun place to go with great
food - the sailfish was fanstatic! Live band was good too.

Best picture of me was probably at Tahiti Nui after I'd had a few drinks. We
were all a little loopy after the Mai Tai's and it made for really funny pictures.

Advice for someone else staying at the unit is to really watch the ocean
before even thinking about going down to Queen's Bath. It's great when the
ocean is calm but very dangerous during heavy surf. Two people died there
while we were staying in Kauai. It was very sad for all of us staying there.

Next Trip I'll be coming back during whale season to watch for whales!!!

Words cannot describe how wonderful our week
was - this was largely due to your family opening
your home to us. The house - from furnishings to
view, and cleanliness - was perfect for our group.
Countless hours were spent by all of us outside
laying by the pool, enjoying the view of the ocean &
rocks below and simply taking in the breathtaking
beautify of our surroundings.

The Hale Makana was the VERY BEST! The views and setting are indescribably wonderful, with whales jumping and turtles swimming below in the water.
Mary Paterson welcomed us to Hale Makana and was incredibly helpful to us during our stay, we can't say thank you enough for your kindness to our family.

The only things we regret about our stay is that is was nearly not long enough, 10 days was way to short a time to enjoy all the wonders of Kauai, as well as the views of the mountains and the frothing ocean from the lanai of Hale Makana.
