Photos and Description of the Kapoho vacation house rental
House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

HULA COVE is a studio cottage located on a semi private cove at the very end of the famous Kapoho tide pools. The cottage was built in the 1970s so close to the water that no changes can be made to the house's foot print without moving the house back 20 feet from the water's edge. This is as close as one can get to the water's edge without being on a boat!

HULA COVE has been updated with satellite TV, fresh linens, a full kitchen and Wi-Fi for lap tops. The house is Hawaiiana in feel with a surfboard hanging on the front of the house and Hula girl pictures and vintage Hawaiian linens and objects d'art around the house.

At night under the swish of the ceiling fans you can literally hear the fish jumping outside your sliding glass doors. So if you want to experience the Hawaii you thought disappeared under the Kona or Maui concrete jungle this could be your Hawaiian fantasy. Weekends at the Tidepools can be quite busy in the summer months and holidays , but you will have a chance to meet the locals visiting from other parts of the Island. Weekdays and off season are much quieter and often you'll have the ponds to yourself during the morning and early evening hours.

If you are visiting with your family you may want to consider renting our 3 bedroom house, HONU KAI (VRBO # 188826)located across the street to house the rest of the gang while you enjoy some peace and quiet alone.

RECENT GUEST COMMENTS:

' Even though we are on vacation and retired I need to conduct business and communicate with the grand kids. Hula Cove was the best place we stayed on our trip. It was well equiped and the access to the tidepools was fantastic! ' James C.

'It isn't the Four Seasons thankfully! Charming Hawaiian bungalow with all that I needed. I loved the peace and quiet. Lots of palm trees clear blue water and tropical fish. When I closed the bamboo gates to the yard the world disappeared and I enjoyed the Hawaii I always dreamed of. ' Dennis M.

Dreaming of Hula Cove

Wow. From the minute we opened the gate into the private landscaped yard, we fell in love with Hula Cove. We stayed for almost a week and loved how peaceful, beautiful, and well-equipped the cottage is. I loved perusing the collection of Hawaiiana books and spent most of my time out on the lanai, just looking out at the tidepools, the birds, and pinching myself that we were in Hawaii.

We did not have a problem with other people staging nearby to snorkel. They were all quiet and doing their own thing. For the most part they walk up, put on their gear, and get in the water and go. I could see that if you had a rowdy group it woud be unpleasant, but that didn't happen during our stay. I'm glad that this neighborhood has graciously provided access to the marine reserve, and seeing people coming by is part of that. The house has a lot of privacy from next door neighbors. On one side you can barely see the house through the trees. On the other side there is some screening from a fence and some foliage, but is still very private because the other house is elevated. We vicariously enjoyed a 12 year old birthday party that happened one afternoon next door.

The snorkeling was fantastic. We saw a green sea turtle on 3 different snorkels. There are dozens of fish species and we enjoyed using the fish ID book at Hula Cove. There are lots of other rentals in the neighborhood, but we felt incredibly lucky to be able to snorkel out our door. You can even see the fish swimming in the tidepool from the lanai.

The kitchen was very well equipped for a rental. We cooked all our breakfasts and dinners there. And we enjoyed eating out on the lanai.

We are already dreaming of coming back to Kapoho for a whole month, and of course I would love it if we could stay at Hula Cove.

PARADISE WITH PROBLEMS

2 of 5
Submitted: July 9, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
We rented Hula Cove and were generally pleased with the location and accommodations.... It's a cute Grandma's house with plenty of stuff to use. The property boasts about its location as its main selling point and when you are alone, it is paradise. The problem with that location is that is not made clear in the description is that a prime entrance to the Cove is directly in front and below the Hula Cove lanai. The commotion begins at about 6 AM and goes past dusk and affected any sense of peace, quiet and tranquility we were expecting and paying for…
Owner's Response: I am happy the guests enjoyed the cottage. We do however advise all guests that the house is right on the water and as such is not private. All property in Hawaii within 15 feet of the high tide water mark are "public access" and as such people might be swimming or walking by the house on any beach or tidal pool. I suggest that if guests are looking for more privacy and quiet that they visit Hawaii in the off season, SEPT, OCT, NOV., early DEC and MAY. Also avoid Holidays at the tidepools and weekends when the locals go the water. Reserve a house off the water or beach . Snorkeling during the busy part of the day or Island sightseeing is probably preferable to pulling down the porch's shades and sitting in the house. OR as I suggest in my correspondence with renters get in the Aloha spirit and meet some new people.

Perfect "Little Grass Hale"

Perfect "Little Grass Hale"

Submitted: February 3, 2012 Stayed: January 2012
My husband and I stayed at Hula Cove for the last part of our two week vacation on the Big Island in January 2012. What a fantastic place! Cute, quaint, cozy, & romantic. Truely 5 steps into the tide pools. So many "extras" at this home. Cooking supplies in the kitchen, coffee, a bean grinder, lots of pots & pans, gas grill, bikes, beach mats, snorkel gear, big binder with info on good places to check out in the area.... the list goes on & on!! My favorites were the thick floaties to lay in the tide pools & the deck chairs for lounging & soaking up the sun!! Perfect spot to watch the sun come up & star gazing at night. Other people do use the path near the hale for enterance into the tide pools, but everyone was friendly and respectful of our space & we even got a wonderful recommendation for Hilo restaurants (Hilo Bay Cafe = awesome). The house was very clean. We never turned on the tv or VCR... but who really needs that in paradise?? But it was nice to have Wi-fi available, to post those "jealousy causing" Hawai'i pics on FB!! I had lost the codes to get into the house & Mike was very prompt (and funny) about answering my e-mail to resend those to me!! My only wish was that the house would have been available for more days... we would have stayed longer!! We will definitely be back to this jewel on the ocean. We are smitten with everything in the Puna district!! Mahalo Mike for sharing your wonderful place with us!! Aloha!! - Brad & Heather

Owner's Response: Unfortunately Hula Cove gets reserved quite frequently and I wish I had more days available for Brad and Heather. They were the"perfect" guests with their enthusiasam to explore the Island, but still find time to relax on the floats and snorkeling. I hope we can welcome them back to Hula Cove in the future so they can relax and enjoy some activities that their vacation time may have cut short.

Mahalo Brad and Heather!

Hula Cottage Getaway

5 of 5
Submitted: March 28, 2010 Stayed: February 2010
My husband and I stayed at the Hula Cottage end of February beginning of March 2010, during the Tsunami scare. We were very impressed with the State of Hawaii's emergency response and with the owner's diligence, the cottage rental personnel and even the cleaning person making sure we were informed! As far as our stay at the cottage, I was a little disappointed in the lack of storage for clothes, but then I always do bring too much. The only other thing I can complain about is that I did not know there is public access to the Tide Ponds near the cottage, so it is not as private as it looks on the website. But at night, it is totally private and incredible! Even a moray eel comes to visit the tide pool and an egret comes to fish nearly every night. There are probably 200 different variety of tropical fish and a big green sea turtle that live in the tide pools and the volcanically heated pools are a dream to swim in at any time of day, rain or shine. Great kitchen to cook in, BBQ grill, very nice bed. Even a pair of bikes for cruising around the hood. I would recommend this rental to anyone. Just leave half of what you were planning to wear...you won't need it anyway! Mandy Jo from Alaska
