Why Linda Attaway/Ken Attaway chose Murray Harbour

I fell in love with Murray Harbour during my first visit in 2003. Acquired the property because I thought it would be a perfect vacation rental, a good way to share our island with visitors.

What makes this house unique

We tried to create a vacation place that felt more like a home than a rental. Our guests agree with us.

Welcome!

As I stepped out the back door of the Bank House for the last time after our three week stay, I noticed the black rubber mat that had been carefully placed where you step down. I thought about stealing it for a brief moment, not because I needed a mat but because it occurred to me that it just wasn't needed there. Not a plain old normal door mat, this one was special because it had the word "WELCOME" boldly splashed across the face of it. It was a Welcome Mat. After three weeks of dealing with Ken and Susan, our gracious and friendly hosts, of getting to meet some of our neighbors who helped to make our stay so special, and of using this beautifully restored cottage to strike out from and explore, or stay home in and relax, the mat just didn't seem to be needed at all. From the exciting day we booked the Bank House until the sad day we left, time after time and in so many different ways we had been given the message that we were welcome there. Nearby beach combing was probably Carol's favorite activity, as she collected shells and sea glass on special assignment for our granddaughter. A nearby golf course provided one of my favorite activities. And then there were the day long car rides. These took us to many interesting spots on the island, many of them in Charlottetown, but were never so distant that we couldn't return to our cozy little home away from home in Murray Harbour. And each time we came back, the little house and the people around it did good things to welcome us back. If you're thinking of booking this spot for a vacation, I don't think you'll have any regrets at all. This was supposed to have been our very last trip to P. E. I., but we're starting to consider maybe just one more, and the Bank House will provide our shelter if we do return. It'll be good to see that mat again, too, so resist the urge to steal when you leave, please.

Happily Lazy at Linda's Lodge

Happily Lazy at Linda's Lodge

From the moment we pulled into the driveway at Linda’s Lazy River Lodge we felt welcome and at home. The unexpected gifts of preserves and baking and wine in the well-appointed and comfortable kitchen had us hooked before we even saw the rest of the house. We were able to maintain that sense of being somewhere special for the remainder of our week in Murray Harbour.

The photographs we had seen don’t quite do the place justice. Natural daylight spills throughout the house and adds more character than what you can see in photos. There was plenty of room for two married travellers who sometimes need separate sleeping quarters. The beds and bedding were very comfortable. There are added details throughout the house that really give it a sense of the owners’ own charm and identity.

We don’t go out for meals a lot at home in Ottawa, so we enjoyed preparing our own fair and eating every meal on the front deck – especially breakfast in the morning light. In the evenings, while watching the spectacular sunsets, the gazebo netting could be put in place to keep any mosquitoes at bay.

Comfortable with living in a 24/7 connected world – even on vacation, yes - wireless Internet was very much appreciated. We watched a couple of movies when we didn’t feel like moving off the couch, but otherwise didn’t need the television or video gaming system (these would certainly be handy if kids were around).

We did eat at Brehaut’s, the restaurant in the village, and really enjoyed the food. Very casual, with friendly service, it’s a busy place, so reservations are a good idea. They also sell ice cream and we saw a lot of take-out business being done.

We had stocked up on food and other, er, “essentials”, in Charlottetown before arriving in Murray Harbour, so we didn’t need to go to the local grocery store until near the end of the week. They have the basics if you run out of anything.

There’s a beach not far from the house and the village itself was a good hub for our activities away from Murray Harbour. We used the available pair of bicycles to ride the nearby section of the Confederation Trail. We also did a fair amount of walking on the back roads. You can meet some very interesting people on these treks.

Coordinating the vacation with Ken was very easy and we were so happy to have caught Linda returning from her own travels before we left. I hope we can return to Murray Harbour and can wholeheartedly recommend Linda’s Lazy River Lodge.

A lovely place to stay...

This was a lovely small home and was exactly as described. It is in a beautiful location, quiet and on a narrow residential street. We were there as two couples, and the house was an ideal size for our needs. On arrival, we found the owners left us homemade biscotti and wine, which made us feel very welcome (the biscotti were yummy, and saved us the price of breakfast for several days!). Their communicaton was friendly and welcoming throughout the rental process. The house was well kept, and beautifully maintained. We took advantage of the front porch overlooking the river to relax in the morning. The friendly neighbors were very helpful. We came for hiking, biking, kayaking, golf, and antique shopping. The surrounding town is very quiet, but there is one friendly family style restaurant a short walk away (it closes at 9 pm) and a grocery nearby. Since we flew from the States, we couldn't bring our own equipment. When deciding on your rental, it's important to remember that the town is secluded. It was not possible to rent bikes or kayaks without a minimum 30 min drive (nor is it possible to find a formal restaurant without driving at least 30 minutes). If you bring your own equipment and cook in the house, you can a memorable vacation (as we did) AND stay out of your car!

Owner's Response: We enjoy the Maritimes and love living in Murray Harbour. We like giving our renters a feeling of being home, with Linda's freshly made baked goods and Kenneth's home-made wine. Additionally, we have just completed re-painting the outside of the Lodge, using the warm, vibrant colours of Spain. The house now has a very cozy appearance.

The house is beautifully restored, maintained, decorated and well equipped. The beds are extremely comfortable and the rooms are bright, cheerful and clean. Our hosts were very thoughtful and accommodating with many little extras to make our stay with two kids very comfortable (sun porch, books, games, videos, Wii, beach towels, etc.). We loved our stay and hope to go back again.

This is a great get-a-way. House sits on Murray Harbor, steps away for kayaking. Walk 10 mins to village shops and the best little restaurant. Short drive to beautiful beaches, lighthouses and all the scenery you would expect to find in PEI. The house is spotless and just so quaint. 2 beautiful bathrooms and the most comfortable beds. Great Deck to enjoy the river view. I highly recommend staying at "Sue's River Edge"

Delightful vacation spot

In August 2010 we spent a week at Bank House on PEI – it exceeded our expectations for holiday accommodations. The kitchen is so well-appointed that we had breakfast and dinner every day from our supplies of fresh fish, produce, and groceries.

The bed was, as promised, wonderfully comfortable. The living room was perfect for reading in the evening, which was the end to every lovely day. The wireless worked perfectly, enabling us to catch up on email every morning and check online for anything we might be interested in seeing or doing that day.

The entire place was spotlessly clean; its location is off the beaten path but not completely secluded – in a quiet neighborhood conveniently located near the Wood Islands ferry to Nova Scotia.

Ken and Sue are gracious, unobtrusive hosts who are easily reached for any sort of question. Most importantly: the description of this rental matches the reality. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more delightful vacation spot.

We spent 3 weeks at Ken and Sue's and would have loved to have stayed longer. The home is comfortable and Ken and Sue are great hosts! Everything is in the home that you would need for a short or long stay. And the best part is that we made some great friends with both Ken and Sue and the neighbors.

If we get the chance to visit PEI again, we would stay here!

Perfect vacation!

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the Bank House! What a change from Brooklyn, NYC! Ken and Sue made us feel like family, even offering us produce from their own garden and leaving us a bottle of Ken's homemade wine. The house's perch on the Murray River is perfect for reading or napping and watching the sunset while frogs croak and crickets chirp. Inside the houses is cheerful and cozy, and the beds are feather-soft. The house is well-appointed with all the utensils and cookware you will need for your stay.

Murray Harbour is a lovely town to stroll around, and the little cafe in town makes delicious food and homemade desserts. From Murray Harbour it is easy to get to the Confederation Trail, various parks, golfing, and restaurants. It is situation outside of the hordes of tourists in Cavendish, but close enough that we visited all of the Green Gables sites and saw the musical in Ch'Town in one day.
My husband and I highly recommend Bank House; we hope to come back for two weeks next year!

Wonderful !!

I was dreaming to visit Prince Edward Island since I was a teenager. I was a Anne of Green Gables fan. Finally, I had the chance to go there last summer with my husband and my 3 years old son. We were looking for a nice little house, not in a too touristic area, and we found the Bank House. On the web site, we were charmed by the pictures but when we opened the door at our arrival, it was more than what we expected. This house is wonderful, the beds are very comfortable, the kitchen is equiped like our at home, the view of the river in front of the house is picturesque, even the neighbours are nice. We found also useful to have a internet wireless connection. We followed the weather forecast of the island day by day and easily choose our activites in accordance to it.
We had really appreciate that Murray River is a quiet and lovely village not to far from Charlottetown and Cavendish just enough to be less crowdy and give you the opportunity to feel the island and the islanders. We found everything that we need at the village grocery, we had delicious lunch at the village restaurant, we had good time at the local beach.
But overall, it was the welcome and the kindness of Sue and Ken who make the difference. Thank you so much for the wonderful vacations that we had in your beautiful house. We hope that we will have the chance to come again to visit you soon.
